SL-GentleKiller: Hey Joseph! Good to see you :) There's still a small fast tourney going and unfortunately non-members can only join 1 tournament. maybe we should start another tournament though? I'm prepared to become a member for it.

How about open fast? How do you all think about that?

i see it all the time..unfortunately. for me 3-5 days between moves is much to long. just look at the black rook prize tourney i started it will be running for 2 years in december! this is with a 5 day time limit.

you say:
here is the dangerous part with vacations. many members get a lot of vacation time and set it on auto vacation they can literally be away from the game for 2 -3 weeks without a move and not time out!

I think this is not a big problem, because most slow players have hundreds of games running. With a fast time-limit, they will find our League game soon in the top of their list and they will become faster.

I never found a paid member not connecting for weeks.

generally we used to accommodate people by changing the time limit mid way through the tourney we would up it from 3 days to 7 days but when they returned we would change the time frame back to 3 days.

Subject: League tourneys for espionage fans
Also we can recruit only among real espionage fans. Players who want to be in for a good espionage challenge and want to be in this particular tournament and not just to add a few more games among the more than 1000 they have. It would make quite a difference I think.

I also like to set a different time control for League events.
In IYT I was one of the slowest players, but here I found a lot of people much slower than me!
Maybe a 3-days limit, with weekends on (as usual here) may work. It's easy and you always have the chance of using vacation days.

Nothingness:
I play mostly at IYT because the graphics of the game are far superior to those here. If the pieces were redone here, I would be more eager to play here. Particularly, give each piece a color (perhaps light orange and light blue--not black and white) background to denote the player it belongs to, and replace the chevrons with symbols that denote its value (rather, get rid of the chevrons--they just clutter the image).
If you agree, I would be thrilled to see such changes here.

this is essentially the main page for any espionage discussion. the page i created is just a place where this hardcore people i wold go. but this best for everyone. as for time controls we will need to tweak the time controls to be advantageous to everyone. b/c as of now people move much to slow for most of us former iyt members. Fencer is also much more open to suggestions and opinions than iyt ever was. he also listens to game creation suggestions and follows through with them. I became a life time member b/c of his stand up personality! Perhaps we can find a way of getting people out of the failed tournies.

Subject: Re:
SL-Bosse: Yes, but pawns will need to be released from #1 (i'm sure Fencer happy to help here), and 3 pawns are advancing to round 2, so they won't be able to play!

Also, I don't see #1 round 1 finishing this year, given the pace of play in section 1!!!

Time control needs to be different. Culture of moving here is very different from IYT as some play numerous thousands of games at one time!

Regarding fellowships, this is not a concern unless you want to play in team tournaments. There has only been 1 team espionage tourny to my knowledge.

Dark Prince: Indeed, I think the tournaments here are organised in a very confusing way. We anounce the League Espionage (=sabotage) tournaments here with a link so you can go straight to the tournament. You can make this discussionboard favourite (see on top of the board). That way you'll always see on your main page when there's a new message.

The first League tournament is still running the first round is on it's end. You can follow it's progress here:

Sabotage Leauge - Small Fast Espionage - #1

Lukulus: thanks for the tip, that's very good to know!!!

Subject: Re: League play and membership
Dark Prince: You simply enter the tournament. On BK people create their own tournaments, rather than them being created by the site. On the tournaments link, what you see are a list of open tournaments, the tournament name and who created the tournament. Most tournaments (like IYT) have multiple games types and you choose the ones you wish to play in. Not all tournaments have all game types and some are dedicated to one game type only. NB. with a pawn membership you may only enter 1 tourny.See posts below.

The League will occasionally create a specific espionage tourny and all are invited to play. The link shows a tourny already under way.
Sabotage Leauge - Small Fast Espionage - #1

You can also find games under waiting games. You can reduce the list by applying filters to this so so you can't see the Ludo game for example. Or choose new game and it will go into the waiting room.

There are also team touraments, which you play as part of a fellowship. Here is a link to one under way:

Dark Prince: Welcome! Good to see you here :) For League play you don't have to be a member. The only tghing is that BrainKing requires you to have a paid membership to participate in more than one tournament at the same time. The tournament you are in has to finish completely (even when you don't have any games left because you're out) before you are allowed to enter a new tournament.

What are the membership requirements for league play? Is that the same as a tournament or is league play a team approach?

Hi all, we've had our first succes with the first tournament, now let's make espionage popular on this site! :)

At IYT I've been telling oldtime SL players about the group playing here, and some are interested in joining the next tournament. So if we get more BK players enthusiastic for the game as well, we good get a great League here again! :)

I hope we'll see some oldtimers popping up on this discussionboard!

Ok, I'll send you an invite, no resignations or BKR, and I'll choose one of the achievement setups too, but won't tell you which I guess you would prefer open fast if you go with 'front line hero'

Subject: Re: Front line base
Chaos: Yes, that's a good point. It does make it possible to play fun tournaments without impacting BKR. What about one where all entrants must have a set up with both 'first line hero' and 'rear of secrets' at the same time, no resignations allowed

Membership is not that expensive. Bought mine with a bonus, so two years for price of one!

Still play in one ladder on IYT and keep plugging brainking. Managed to convert Sandoz and some are still thinking. Hopefully 'The Saboteur' will join us here. He said he would check it out. Sabotage on IYT is nearly dead now, and the numbers playing in the ladders are dwindling.

What a gentleman to sacrifice yourself that way! I'm happy to have 'first line hero' already but I'm not prepared to try 'rear of secrets' against you. No offence, but that IS personal ;)

SL-Mark: You can set up games and even tournaments not to affect BKR. So it's possible to create such tournament here as well. maybe it's time for me to become a paid member here :)

The 'only' problem we do still have is a lack of espionage players. We really should try to lure more people into this game and maybe even train them.

Subject: Re: Front line base
Nothingness: I remember a small tournament back in the good ol' days of IYT when we still had the boards, can't remember who organised it , and about 6 - 8 partook.

The tournament was small fast but the placement must have been created using the random set up! It was a 'gentle man's' agreement that no tweaking was to occur. This was one of the best fun tournaments I played in and learned lots having to start from a forced undesirable position.

Unfortunately won't work here, as one of the neat features of this site, BKR, would prevent this from taking place.

17. June 2009, 23:03:34

generally i don't resign unless it is hopeless. Its is doubtful that i will ever lose a game where a person uses a front line base. Good players will expose this EVERYTIME!

But why not change the set up to increase the personnal challenge against a weaker player.

After all they don't know what you are doing, and by the time they do, it's too late

The achievements are just a bit of fun on the side.
