Subject: ponds & team play
the whole issue about ponds is :

is team play allowed ?

this topic has been discussed before (i think on the ponds board)
if i remember correctly the outcome was that team play was allowed, although many players didnt like it

this means that its not cheating to have someone tell you your bid for the next round .. so that he can bid 1 higher

Subject: Re:
pedestrian: i dont know if you can call it a formula .. but personally i look back to the last 3 rounds .. i look at how much the average increases between those rounds and continue from that .. or i simple do 1.5 times the last difference

its quite easy to copy that and add 1 ...
i think the 'formula' used by other players is a bit more complicated .. but as said .. the goal of this game is to guess the formula used by your fellow players and use it to your advantage

paully: they were brain knight or higher when they achieved their top moves

since then they became a pawn .. but they are still on the list

so they did appear when they were brain knight or higher, to remain on the list you dont have to be brain knight or higher

Subject: should walls be moderated ?
thats the question : should walls be moderated ?

and who can find the find the time to monitor all walls
i think it cant be done that way

but .. when someone notices something which doesnt seem right .. he/she can always mention it to someone who can take action

a bit similar to a player who achieves a high rating because he is only playing friends who let him win ... it would take a lot of time to monitor all players ratings .. but in case you happen to stumble upon such a culprit .. you can mention it to someone who can do something about it

or are there any other ideas on how walls could be made family friendly ?

Bernice: when vacation days are set they are substracted from the total of vacation days at once .. even when the vacation day itself still has to come

for example : suppose i have 10 vacation days left and i use them all for the following 2 weeks .. then you would see a total of 0 vacation days left on my profile .. but i still wont timeout the following 2 weeks

if i remember right you can see wether someone has set some vacation days in the future already .. i am not sure weither it shows it when 'today' is set as an vacation day though

something else that could have happened is when someone changes his/her weekend days .. the old setting might have been used (because it was still valid then) while you see the new setting when you look at it later (and in the time between someone has changed the setting)

wetware: "Dice games require less thinking?"

you are right for some dice games. most dice games have limited move options though, far less options than chess .. its also tougher to think ahead and build a plan with dice games .. at least thats beyond my capabilities .. i can 'feel' a few moves ahead with a probability that it might happen with dice games, but with a chess type (or pente or espionage) i can plan a bit more ahead which takes time

so dice games dont require less thinking .. but they certainly require less time per move (for me)

Subject: Re: Games statistics
AbigailII: i mean that i can join more dice games .. because it will take me less time to make my moves ...

suppose i joined 100 dice games and its my turn in all those games .. then it takes me a lot less time to make all my moves before i timeout compared to 100 chess games

so only considering the spare time i have i can easier join 100 dice games than 100 chess games

Herlock Sholmes: dice games require less thinking .. therefore its easier to make a quick move in those games and more of those games can be played at once

personally i always try to judge my time before i join a chess or pente type of game because it can take quite some time to make a move .. but i will almost always joing a dice game

(not at the moment though ... busy time coming up so i have to restrain myself a bit :))

AbigailII & Czuch: lol .. i wish we had :)

the weekend takes away 2 days .. i usually play within 1 day (and most of the times much faster) but i prefer to have 2 days left per move when i log out ... so if the weekend doesnt count then i need 4 days per move when i leave on friday

monday is usually a busy day at work so i make less moves then

31. July 2009, 19:18:16

Subject: Re: negative time left
AbigailII: personally i do need the weekend days ... most of my playing i do from work (mostly in my breaks :)) .. in the weekends i will be busy and might not be able to come online

during the working days (mon till fri) i might be a fast player, but in the weekends i am quite slow

then again i dont mind slow games .. i just would miss it to be able to join tournaments with 3 days per move .. without weekend days thats not possible for me

31. July 2009, 19:16:05
Hrqls
Subject: Re: negative time left
Fencer: i agree, the simpler the system the better

adjustable weekenddays give me some extra vacation days per year (by setting them the most profitable when i leave) .. although i agree thats a bit of an abuse of the weekend days :)

the problem i had today though is that i didnt change anything in the settings (neither calendar or any other) .. i just viewed them to see if i could set my weekend back to sat & sun again .. i didnt change anything .. but now most of my games will try to timeout while i am asleep (i will use an extra vacation day to prevent that so i wont worry :))

i dont know what other could have caused it than me viewing the calendar settings

another funny thing is that every hour (i think) each game which was in the negative became 2 days less negative .. so i started at -16 days .. an hour later some were -14 .. and hour later some were -12 .. and now most are within 1 day or even positive

sat & sun for the weekend is best for me .. but thats just me personally of course

Subject: negative time left
ok i have the problem as well

i just came back from my vacation .. i have today set as a vacation day .. i logged in and noticed some games had a few hours left .. the rest more than a day .. i made my moves in the game which had less than a day time left ..

everything is fine ... all my games have more than 1 day left and tomorrow (when i am awake) i can make the rest of the moves

i then went to my calendar settings ... i did change nothing .. i went back to the main page .. and now quite some games have -16 days time left

this looks weird .. and scared me a bit .. i will see what happens .. i have 23 vacation days left for the rest of the year and automatic vacation days on .. so if i have 22 vacation days tomorrow .. then 1 was taken away automatically by these negative times (although today was already set as a vacation day)

Subject: Re: People who resign
i think nationality doesnt make a difference. culture might or the way someone has being raised by their parents (in any culture)

the main point is ... you are resigning as a favour for your opponent ... therefore its an good ethiquette to warn your opponent you will resign (or ask him if you can) unless you already know what your opponent wants

20. June 2009, 11:49:05
Hrqls
Subject: Re: People who DON'T resign
i usually play on my games until the very end .. although i sometimes already know there wont be a way for me to win anymore

the reason for that is that i like to get a feeling with the end stage of the games .. for example in backgammon i play it on till the end to see wether a gammon or backgammon would be won or what the consequences of the positions would .. and how my opponent handles the end stage

the same for chess games .. i am not a good chess player .. therefore i play it on to see how and end game can be played

in games like dice poker i resign when i am too many points behind .. the same for reversi where i can count out the number of pieces which we will both have in the end

though when i notice that my opponent can reach an achievement then i wont resign and play on
(for example the achievements in dice poker can only be obtained when you win the game and not when your opponent resigns ... so when my opponent has all the bonusses i do play it on till the last move)

i would consider it a bad manner if i would resign such a game .. if i really want to resign i send a message to my opponent if i can resign on the next move ..1 more move wont matter

its good manner and good etiquette do place yourself in your opponent position and think of what (s)he might prefer you to do .. then weigh it against your own wishes .. and make a good decision .. or discuss it with your opponent

AbigailII: true .. a thread shouldnt be spread up .. thats why i would love it to be possible to actually move a thread instead of directing follow up posts .. on other sites where i am a mod you can move a thread (the boards are threaded there) and leave a (shadow) link to the new location of the thread

as it is right now someone reading the discussion will also see the post (in the same discussion) which directs the follow up to another board and can follow it there

where as it stays on this board it might not be found by someone in the future searching for a specific discussion about knight fight
its especially for the archiving and future searches that its preferred to put the post on the most specific board

the subject of the colors is definetly a subject for this board .. an in depth discussion of knight fight specifically might fit best on a specific knight fight board

personally, in this case, i didnt mind staying both discussion (color and knight fight) on this board .. but i understand the reason to move it .. the reason why i responded was that the response was seen as a personal issue .. which it wasnt

but best of all would be a threaded board with the possibility to move threads and leave a shadow link :)

it was just a kind suggestion to move the discussion to the board where people who are interested in the game might read it

there are some people who dont read this board as they are only interested in the games and not in the site itself ... those people might miss the discussion about the specific game

i am sure it was not meant at you personally .. just a subject which gets a lot of responses .. which therefore might be very interesting .. to show that subject to the people who are most interested in it .. and in a place where in the future people who might be interested can still find it

if i am looking for some discussion about the win/loss odds for a specific color in a specific game .. then i look at the board about that specific game

Artful Dodger: true that these situations wont occur that often ... but neither are many people abusing it

personally i do need 1 batch of vacation days per year for sure .. to be able to go on vacation(in fact its something that i do miss a lot on dialygammon .. on there i have to make someone else play for me while i am away .. that doesnt feel right) .. but it might happen somewhere in the future that i might be glad to have the possibility to buy some more .. but thats just me

i think the vacation days system on this site is great .. and better than what most sites have ... too bad though that its abused by a few people .... i have rather this with a little abusing that none at all though

Subject: Re: There are genuine cases where people get ill and end up in hospital.
Artful Dodger: agree .. i manage quite well with vacation days + weekends .. but there might be some events in the future where my normal amount might not be enough .. even if i wouldnt spend any vacation days at all during the rest of the year (i think i (brain rook) have 30 days per year ? thats 6 weeks .. which can easily be taken away by some of the points i named below

for normal days/years the amount of vacation days is plenty .. for those unlucky ones its possible to buy extra days

those who buy extra days even while they are not unlucky .. hmm .. let them be .. it doesnt matter to you .. the only ones it would matter to are pawns as those 'endless' games take up a game slot .. for rooks (and certainly for a block rook like you) 1 extra game in the waiting list in which its your opponents move should not make a difference

i agree though that a limit on the amount of vacation days would be nice .. but i can live and still be happy if it stays unlimited like it is right now .. why bother ? better have fun with what you do have :)
