Congratulations "mangue"! Well done. It went to the wire after you guys knocked me out of contention with it being a three way tie at the time. Yes, I became extinct! :(
See you at the Second Quarter tournament as I'm demanding a rematch! Just in time for the Second Quarter tournament come to think of it!

Yes, Walter you can change the section size, but since its set to 4 players by default, thats why most tournaments are 4 players per section. People don't worry too much about changing them.
As for which is best, well I guess thats personal choice. I like the 4 players per section because its a quicker tournament, and more chance of getting through to the second round. Higher number of players = more games, longer tourney and less chance of winning. But more of a challenge!

Subject: Second Quarter Tournaments Starting Soon
One week until the Dark Chess and Extinction Chess tournaments will get going. Looks like there'll be a couple sections, maybe three in the Dark Chess one.

I have a question concerning the organizing of tournaments. Is it better to have large sections of eight people, or small ones of four or five? I suppose the answer depends on what I mean by "better", but I've noticed that a lot of tournaments are set for sections of four or five people. I tend to think it's better to have as many people play at once, but it does mean there's less winners available for a later round if you only start with a few sections. 24 people into 3 sections of 8, or 6 sections of 4. It'd be kind of nice if the organizer could set the sections based on the actual number of entrants as opposed to having it set in stone, or can I change the section size before starting the tournaments?

Walter there are 2 styles of play in checkers. 3 move retriction checkers where you pick an opening from cards which shows the first 3 moves for each player and Go As You Please which means you play your own opening moves. :o)

Since I've had a few people ask about these tournaments, I'll post the answer here!

"Fast Start" tournament WILL BE BACK!

I'll start creating these tournament again after the BK2.0 conversion. Since BK2.0 will handle tournaments differently (actually start by date set) which is not how I set these tournaments up, they will require me to do a few things differently in setting up/starting these tournaments - so I figured it would just be easier for me to make sure all my tournaments were clear, and start them back up after the BK2.0 conversion.

Thanks!

UPDATE June 18th: Since it sounds like BK2.0 will take an extra week, I have started a few more tournaments.

Any fault remains with me. BK is still in infancy and Fencer does the best he can, learning more about best way to do things as he goes. Most cut him some slack and keep things in perspective. Some just can't wait to share their ill disposition. One thing is for sure, no one faces any harm while things get sorted here. In the past some have played mind games with tournaments, prizes, fellowships, etc... This was never my intention. I come here for good games, friends, and positive interactions. Not for grief. I am too busy in life to feel obligated to endure misery from anyone here. I truly miss the atmosphere I encountered when first I came here. Those who remember will know what I mean and share the feeling. Those who would seek to perpetually force their negativity upon the silent majority unfortunately grow in number proportionately. Sad fact. This is NOT directed at Caissus! He is nothing less than a valuable asset to this site and a friend.
Whatever I do from here will be completely anonymous and well under the radar so nobody needs to wonder if I've learned my lesson. Thanks to all who place good will to others and understanding above prizes. If someone wants to use computers to win, I hope they play someone else. I would like to note that I was not even a participant in the tournament in question. This was to remove any appearance of foul play, namely that I might use a computer to win my own prize. There are many good people here!

Subject: Re: BK World Championship Chess Tournament
Walter, the offered prizes are mostly memberships.
The prize tournements donated by members are one of the great features of BK.But we need rules for it.Okay,if the promised prize will not handed over, you can say it is a matter of the donor.
But the donor uses the Bk server for his promises, that`s why it is a matter also of BK!
I suggest the following: If a prize tournement is offered by the tournement creator,he has to give the prize within 10 days to Fencer, otherwise the tournement will be deleted as not seriously. With this measure can be ensured that the winner gets indeed the promised prize,if the tournement is finished perhaps 6 or 12 months later.

Perhaps you should have the tournament as a Dark Chess tournament instead of regular Chess? I doubt very much that there's any programs for it or that they play very good, plus it's not easy for players to get help from kibitzers either. If not, what was the prize that you were offering? Maybe I'll match it sometime in the future and do it myself.

No, don't leave Rogue Lion. Surely everyone can see that you did the right thing? I mean, what else could you do? No-one is going to hold it against you. At least you were decent enough to try. It's not your fault that a few can spoil it for the many.

Rogue, don't do that, I also think you did the right thing. As you say, you were between a rock and a hard place. I don't see you had any other option, I'm sure I would have made that decision too.

Thanks bumble, but already too much flak and no way to ever live it down. I have resigned all my games and will forfeit my recently renewed membership as donation to Fencer. Maybe this shows it's not about the money as some will suspect.

And here is where I cannot win. Some are already complaining of known "cheaters" while the others say it's not cheating at all. I am in between a rock and hard place. Maybe we just have fritz play fritz and I give fritz $80. Any blame stays with ME.

I've always thought that is was basicly an "unwritten" rule that using any type of program (including chess programs) are against the rules. I mean the point of playing a games with someone is to play them, not their computer.

Subject: Re: BK World Championship Chess Tournament
It is not okay to offer a prize tournement and than to delete the tournement and to withdraw the prize! We have had it in the past several times and the players always are the fools then!

And in addition it is my impression you don`t know what you speak about:
Don`t you know that in correspondence chess (and turn-based chess with his asynchron playing is nothing else than correspondence chess, beside cards, fax and e-mail) using chesssoftware is not cheating?. Read the rules of the International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF).Do you find there any prohibitions? Read the rules of Brainking! Are there any prohibitions? No there aren`t.
The reason is :You cannot control ist really! And prohibitions make sense only if you have a real control! But as far as there are no prohibitions, it is allowed and it is not cheating!
The truth is: 70-80% of the world`s correspondence chess players everywhere are playing with all helps they can have : books, databases, common analysis a n d chesssoftware. And in Brainking it is the same. The truth is also that they/we all play zentaurchess (human-machine) but this is not a reason to complain, because the chances are equal for all players.
If those, who say "cheating!",want avoid this, they can play "live" at one of the great live -chesservers (ICC,USCL or playchess.com) like a "man" and show their abilities. There - at "Livechess" with his synchron playing, only one game in 5,10 or 15 minutes for the whole game - computers are forbidden and at playchess.com for instance your account will deleted automatically if you are using software(They can control it really).

I am very disappointed now,you should have considered these facts before:The prize was advertised by :"Sponsored by the chessclub"!
But we here in BK will continue to play correspondence chess tournements, every player with his own technique, but within the rules and without "cheating"!

bummer. oh well. I guess that's a fact of life. Some people just don't how to win and lose like a man (or woman). If I beat someone, it's because I won fairly. If I get beat, I want it be because I got beat by someone better than me, not because I got beat by a computer.

It has been brought to my attention that the use of chess software to make moves in this event is a distinct probability. Unfortunately, this form of cheating is impossible to prove, and the controversy that such allegations would create are beyond resolution. As this issue has become a point of contention weeks before the actual event was scheduled to begin and I have no way of insuring a fair result it is with great regret that I must announce the tournament has been CANCELLED .
I will not attempt any prize orientated chess tournaments again. I am deeply sorry for any inconvenience. Thank you for your understanding, R*L

Just to let everyone know, you have about 1 day left to sign up for the 4th tournament for dummies.

Games: ALL GAMES
BKR: Under 1500 (and unrated)

It is a great way to learn new games, also to be able to play games which you might not be too good at (and you don't have to worry about playing any of the "experts")

Before the tournament starts, I may remove users who are WAY over the 1500 BKR limit, so feel free to sign up for all you want!

This is simply a reminder to those who are participating.

The tournament will start later this weekend & please remember that all participants have agreed to play each side of the following opening in all games, through all rounds:

9-13 22-18 10-14

This is known as THE INFERNO opening, a very difficult one which has only been recently approved by the ACF for the 3-Move Restriction Deck, after extensive testing via Mail-Play.

If there is any confusion remaining about which move or moves to make to begin your games (to ensure The Inferno is being played), please contact me or Nomad & we'll do our best to set you on the right track.

I wish you all great gaming & sportsmanship in the tournament. :o)

The tournament is also open for unrated players, so the "high rated" players in there now are probable playres who were unrated when the signed up, but now have a rating.

Before I start the tournament, I will go though each of the games and remove players that are WAY over the 1500 BKR limit. (Even though I may allow users who are now just a little over 1500 stay.)

BBW, I don't understand how some can sign up and others can't. In a few of them I got a message that I couldn't sign up because my rating was say 1510 or 1600, yet there are some members signed up in some of the games with much higher ratings (some over 1800).
Will these be allowed to stay? Just curious!!
