Ok a probation period... and how about having to have played some games before being allowed into tourneys.
I am not overly concerned about method here.. just a realistic cure...

Since fencer is charged something like 2 bucks for every transaction, sending him two bucks would defeat the purpose but if someone (namely me) with a merchant account was willing to accept the $2 (money order, cheque etc)sent to me I could then send it to fencer in one larger lump sum once it accumulated. Its something worth thinking about.

Subject: Re: Sounds to me...
I do not think a $2 suggested one off payment is beyond anybodies means. It is to deter people from making multiple ID's and using them to disrupt the site.
Perhaps if you would be so kind as to leave personalites out of it you could insteadv offer a constructive solution to the problem of the abuses highlighted here recently.
My previously posted views, if actually read were...
1) The principle of free play provides a pool of competition which I should not like to lose.
2) Those people who do pay should be given precedence of access when resource is in short supply.
Neither of those previous points has anything to do with this suggestion. They were to address a different problem.

is just trying....

to get everyone....

to pay up.....

because of personal views against those....

who do not or cannot pay to play.....

And that just sucks.....

But luckily I think Fencer is smarter than that and is quite able to devise a plan fitting all peoples of all corners. :·)

I would be a paying member on principle, but the site won't accept money orders, which is what I use. Perhaps this can be changed.

Subject: there is a way
Simple really....
You cannot stop multiple ID's
You can provide incentive for them to behave within a code of conduct...
An enrollment fee...
Before the play for free party form a lynch mob read on...
It only needs to be a couple of Dollars...
It only needs to be paid once....
It can be later offset against other memberships should knight or rook be taken....
Since they then have something to lose "flaming" "tournament killing" become controllable and BK building expensive...
And if you can afford the ISP service/computer etc 2 bucks will not kill...

Now why didnt I think of that... instead of using the BKR to play amongst my peers...
If the ratings algorythm works as I think it does then he must have built a huge pryamid for it to work... perhaps if instead he had spent the same effort studying the game of his choice to improve his skill he could have the satisfaction of earning his rating.

27. November 2003, 10:54:42
Jason
if people have to play themselves to get a high rating then they are decieving themselves . they are not as good as they would like to think they are ... ps i have noticed this with a few players ...hopefully fencer can get a way to stop it or at least catch then doing this and ban then or something in the final brainking version

27. November 2003, 10:42:18
berengeria2
By creating multiple IDs it is possible play them against one another, creating an artificially high rating for one of them. A guy on another site manufactured a 3500 chess rating this way.

This is a very rare case (isn't it?), any repressive steps to prevent such behaviour is likely to be a case of the treatment being worse than the disease.

May I draw your attention to a player DEADEND..
Joined 26th signed up for tournament first 5... resigned all games today 27th...
Appears no doubt in statistics for site and (no doubt) will never be removed...
May I ask what steps you propose to prevent the quiet enjoyment of the site by others being spoilt by this conduct.

All of this multiple account business may be much to do about nothing. Abusers, suffering from split personality or not, will be delt with in standard fashion. Fencer has already addressed this issue. Back to the games!

I have as many email addresses as I can dream up want (as I have a domain and an email server) so this wouldn't stop me if I were that way inclined and as I do not have a static IP then the IP address wouldn't work either except during the same session.

26. November 2003, 09:17:16

Would a suggestion be in order?
I have just registered as a new user, but I am a paid member as well :(
To stop the multiple log ins of trouble-makers would it not be possible to allow the use of your email address only ONCE? or even twice.
Now I know this will bring a howl from "family" users who all have the same email address, but in that case an email to a trusted employer or caretaker would enable multiple family usages.
It seems a good way to stop all the rubbish from trying to upset the rest of BrainKing...A private message on its way asking you to please close this account....LOL if that is possible without deleting this message

When playing backgammon does the opponent see the board as if they were sitting on the other side or are the dice reversed so that both sides see the left dice on their left and the right on their right? In short how do we know which piece they moved first?
