Subject: Re:
Czuch: IE7 has a rendering mechanism that waits for the whole page to load before drawing it.
Previous IE versions and most other browsers start rendering the page as soon as it is downloaded. So, they start by rendering the left column, then make space for the central part and finally shrink the whole page to make space for the right column. This is why it seems like the page is jumping from side to side until it is completelly downloaded .
Most browsers try to display the page as soon as possible to give the impression that they load pages faster. Most of the time there is no problem with that. Except in cases like BK where the layout of the page can't be accuratly determined until close to the end of the page, because of that right column.

Opera does have a setting to only start rendering the page after a few seconds. Not sure if Firefox has anything similar. Otherwise, if it really is such a big deal, seems like IE7 might be a good bet for you.

Another option would be to convince Fencer to put the code of the right column before the central part of the page. Stylesheets should help make sure that the whole thing falls into place properly... unless, of course, someone has them disabled

rednaz23: Well I just counted while waiting for this page to load and I counted a full 6 seconds for that side to load. (It didn't need to load any red numbers but I do have 5 friends online at the moment.

It is frustrating because you can't start to work with the page until that column has loaded because it kicks the page sideways. Several times I have gotten ahead of the load and then it kicked on me and I clicked the wrong thing and had to go back and re-do what I was intending as well as fix the wrong thing I clicked! I have put the suggestion in this board but I will add a formal request in the Features board.

Subject: Re:
TarantinoFan: Within that little red number is a lot of code. Particularily the website link to whatever game you have with each friend. There is also some html code to change the color of the font to red... so those things together may be causing a few extra moments of delay...

The thing to do to get rid of that little delay is to make all your friends not friends. You could also stay on top of all of your games, meaning less code pops up that you have to wait to load, and the final option is to nicely ask Fencer for a way to eliminate those individual things on the right side.... which would be a really nice feature... or a way to reorganize the side features to the way each individual person wants it organized... that would also be nice! I don't think it is a neccessity, but those are things that can always be done to give the individual more control of there main page... sort of like facebook! ...you can make it look like however you want! ...within reason of course.

im still at a loss trying to understand how having red numbers next to a list that already shows up on your page makes it longer to load

And just a note. The site has been working fine for me over the last few days.

Still annoyed about the delayed load on the right hand column after the last "upgrade" (I think the numbers after Friends Online was a nonsense piece of addition that no-one really needed but that is just my opinion)

But apart from that I have just managed to get through all of my games. I haven't seen a 0 in my game list for quite a while and it is rather pleasing to me!

Subject: The real reason for BrainKing's problems
I bet you think the internet runs on fiber optic cables and wireless transmissions. No. It runs on child labor. Little children on bicycles ride through underground tunnels delivering emails and web packets. They work very hard in the hope that, someday, they too will be allowed to live among the surface dwellers. The trouble is, you have to pay bribes to the syndicate in order for your website to run properly. Fencer fell behind in his payments, so some portions of the syndicate stopped delivering web packets for him. But these payments are very important. They pay for the food that the little children eat, and without them the children starve. So the real reason for BrainKing's problems: Fencer hates chidren.

Subject: Interviews
I was planning to arrange Bubbles Pbarb2 's interview next weekend. However I still have only a handfull of questions, mostly from the people who voted her in. I'm guessing people are leaving it to the last minute because now I've been setting a deadline to collect them, but if you have some questions for her then please send them soon, so I can decide the best line of action before the weekend.

In the meantime, I'm arranging a list of the most voted people to send to Bubbles Pbarb2 so she can pick the next interviewee. If you want to influence her decision you can still vote on the next person to be interviewed...

Thank you.

Tulip: the problem is that it works for most people
it doesnt work for some people

if it would have been a problem with the site then it should work with noone

if you cant connect to the site via the brainking.com or similar urls but you can connect to the site via the ip adres 89.187.130.22 then its a problem with your ISP which hasnt been updated

the site is working for me (except sunday 28 october) when the harddisk failed. at that time everyone had problems connecting to the site so it was clear that it was a problem with the site

anyone correct me if i am wrong

jryden: I did see your prior post and did follow your suggestions:
1) I could not get in through brainking.com
2) I could not get in through the brainking.x,y or z sites
3) I could not get into brainking.info at all
4) I could only get in through the ip address 89.187.130.22 and only able to see the postings and none of the images (as explained in my prior post)
My post was more of an informational post in response to a recent post stating that everything was running just fine.
I am accessing the site today for the first time in 2 weeks through brainking.com and all appears to be working ok. (finally!)

alanback: I find the site goes down on a regular basis.  I'm not a hard core player very often so I just go do something else for a couple of hours and usually it comes back.  I noticed this for a while before the move and now again after the move so...whatever.

There are definately still DNS problems.  Mighty Orion, I posted a while back how you get around the problems.  Please take a look.  Also, I tried fencer's suggestion about connecting via brainking.cz and that seemed to work however, I don't know if that will fix your image problems.

Check my post and try out that solution.  It is up to us to help each other connect.  If more people start getting pissed off, they'll all cancel their subscriptions and Fencer et. al. will go broke.  Then we will have no site!  Can't have that.

Fencer, you really should re issue your DNS update commands.  Clearly something went wrong somewhere and I don't think it is going to fix itself.

Again, I can not get into "brainking.com."
I can get to this board via http://89.187.130.22/

I have not been able to get to "brainking.info" at all since almost 2 weeks ago.
Game boards and images are also not showing up so I can not see any games and therefore am not able to make moves.
I am using up vacation days as I type. :>(
A few posts ago I saw that the site is supposedly up and running and is fast!
Well, not for me.
So, any information (and help) about what the heck is going on would be appreciated.
Thanks.
