kitti.. you are actually apologing here? I am appalled. If what you say is true, you owe no apology. Any opponent who does and says what you are claiming your opponent did, is a FRAUD. Anyone who claims to be one of the best players at anything would NEVER try to take the huge advantage of playing only as player 1 in a game where player 1 has a huge advanatge!

If he is such a big player, he should not fear playing you or anyone lese for that matter. Only a fraud is nervous about playing as player 2.

Spiderman, what you said in your defense does not add up. If you do not wish to play individual games, but only two game matches, why did YOU send out the invite to theo ther player? Do you think you are doing the "lesser" players a favor by playing them only with the upper hand?

This is nonsense, and it reflects poorly on you as a supposed top player. I have never delcined an invite, because I know that players of all levels like to play aginst the top players. As the top player in 4 games, I want to be fair and give others a chance to gain the top spots. But if I did not want to play for some reason, I would tell the person I am not playing any games right now. I would never tell the person I would play only as player 1, that is most unfair.

Spiderman, you said you are NOT opint grabbing or protecting your rating, yet you told Kitty you would not play her as player 2 because you did not want to risk losing points!

But hwat you said that most disgusts me is this:

"I think people should just chill out more & stop getting paranoid by thinking there being persecuted...If they want to play then fine, if they dont want to play, the fine again! Its only a game & theres alot more serious things in life than this."

WHAT A PILE OPF GARBAGE! Make up your mind! If you are overly concerned about losing some opints to Kitty, then you obviously do not believe what you said there.

I can't either understand this fuss about 'easy point grabbers'. There aren't that many (talking about spiderline) players in this site and some of the top players are already playing continuously against others. I really can't see any good reason for 2000+ players to decline invitivations from let's say top 5 players. I mean in the sense of protecting their ratings, of course if they just don't want to play it's always possible to decline the invitation. The bigger rist for losing ratings is always in the player with higher rating. And the only way to get better is to play against better players and learn from these games.

I would say that current top 3 players in spiderline are all truly great players not some rating grabbers. Look at their games and you can see that play against any kind of players and usually 2-game matches. All these other small-minded rating fanatics could learn something from them. After all it's only a game and ought to be fun for everyone.

Pekka

LOL - fancy finding you 2 talking about spider line 4 :-)
There is a tournament in the Madhouse at the moment of which you are both members, only 2 people have signed up for it (both with 2000+ ratings) & me lol but niether of you have. I realise SPIDERMAN has exams so could be a problem, but i still fail to see why no one else is play with such high ratings, worried about losing maybe LOL

SPIDERMAN, I know you are one of the best spider players here. I have looked at your profile and know you have played a lot 2 game matches against the top players. I'm not trying to put you down.

However sending an invite to me and then declining mine with the colors switched really does look like protecting the rating to me! If you were not thinking about ratings why would you refuse to play black against me? You prolly would have won anyways.

I'm sorry if i offended you and i hope we don't have to hold a grudge. I'm not very good at that :)

Subject: Re:
I'm not sure what the big deal is about playing a much higher ranked player. First of all, there is a decline key. This entire thing could have been avoided had the invite just been declined. I see no reason that someone would get upset. If you don't think it is fair, decline it and move on. Secondly, regardless of the game, I would jump at the opportunity to play a higher ranked player. The points I lost would be minimal, if any at all depending on the ranking difference and I might actually learn something by playing a higher ranked player.

About ratings etc...I'd like to put forward a sensible point across.

I find it very hard on this site to play a good competitive spiderline 4 game as the strength & depth isnt as good as IYT, but I realise this site is relatively new but its progressing well with some good IYT players coming here..this is great news for the site as a whole!

Because I like to play spiderline4, & take a look at my profile as I aint got many games going, I only really like playing over 2000 ranked players in a 2 game MATCH & there arnt many on here...this makes sense for BOTH parties involved...but when I invite a 2000+ player to a game, WITH the opportunity to cancel it & start a 'fairer' match up instead, I dont expect to get a message back from this 'particular' person saying that Im an 'easy point grabber' & Im 'protecting' my ratings! lmao!!

I would like this person to take a good look at my spiederline4 games & see that the majority of my matches are against the VERY best players on here...If I was 'easy point grabbing' or 'protecting' my rankings, then SURELY I would AVOID these top players! BUT NO IM NOT AVOIDING them coz they are the kind of good competitve matches that keep me playing this excellent stratergy game on THIS site!

I think people should just chill out more & stop getting paranoid by thinking there being persecuted...If they want to play then fine, if they dont want to play, the fine again! Its only a game & theres alot more serious things in life than this.

Oh I havnt metioned who his person is, but I srongly agree with them that there should be different ranking points for black games, as its harder to win on black.

Take care readers, & have fun'

Matt :)

But that doesn't solve the real issue: one can manipulate the ratings by choosing who you play against and which color you use.

I also think that autorefresh is pretty much useless and should be disabled atleast until the server issues are solved. I've turned mine off ages ago. I usually keep brainking in one browser window even if i'm browsing other sites or doing something else on the computer. I'm sure i'm not the only one who does this. If i had auto refresh on i'd be generating lots of unneeded requests to the server. I bet many don't even know about the auto refresh and are stressing the server needlessly.

19. June 2003, 11:40:44

Kitti, you could still cancel the game if you have not made many moves. You wouldn't lose any ratings points at all.

Subject: Twisting the ratings
People who decline invitations because their rating might drop if they lose bug me. I just got an invite to play spider line4 with me playing black. In this game white has a huge advantage. I accepted the invition and sent him invite for another game with me playing white to even things out. But he declined the invite saying that he doesn't want to risk losing many points (he has much higher rating than me) by playing black against me!

I really can't understand such behavior. Are the ratings really more important than fair play to some people? Maybe there should be different ratings for black and white in each game.

vikings, if you are surfing the site and clikcing on different pages, the auto refresh serves no purpose. I am not sure you understand what it does. The auto refresh refreshes the page when you are idle, doing nothing at all. So it does not apply to the situation you described.

I try to look at both sides of it, but must say i dont really see any need for it at all.
Is there any real difference between that & hitting the F5 key on a PC (None).
Going back to earlier when myself & tonyh were talking about it, if 120 people are on line & only 40 are playing games, BUT the other 80 have there refresh set at 10 seconds - surely this is just putting the server under pressure that isnt needed, as little as it may be.
I think that if a person does not make a move or do something on the site after a certain time either there auto-refresh could be disabled OR maybe they should just be logged off & have t log back on again.
Just a few thoughts :-)

This has to go. what is the point iof having auto refresh? If it slows down the server AT ALL, GTE RID OF IT! IT is NOT neeeded! I have heard only one person give a reaosn for having it, and it was a TERRILBE one. The reason was "I can sit on the couhc and watch TV and not have to gte up to see if it is my turn."

A statement of such extreme laziness should come as no surprise in a nation where 50% or more of the people are overweight and 20% are obese.

BUt it is hardly a reason for hacing auto refresh and I tihnk it is time to get rid of it.

18. June 2003, 22:44:36

Yep, it would slow it down. But definately not as much as a player actively playing. It might even be good enough to turn auto-refresh off by default, and players can turn it on if they want to.

I will ask a friend Kevin.
So maybe if someone was to leave there pc logged in & not do anything but refresh every minute or whenever it will slow down the server - maybe an auto-logout is not such a bad idea then ???

18. June 2003, 22:36:55
Kevin
Yes, those are requests too :-)

Although, the listing as "Brain Rook" might just be because we're rooks (so it says rook for everyone). Has a pawn or knight checked other levels to see if it does that too?

18. June 2003, 22:34:06
MadMonkey
I never noticed that with Knights as well, thats quite funny :-)

Does auto refresh count as a request being sent then, if you have 100 people just letting the screens refresh every minute that must have an effect - maybe not.......

18. June 2003, 22:29:53
Kevin
And Knights too :-)

By the way, like has sort of been mentioned, it really has nothing to do with how many people are logged on. It is completely dependent on how active they are at the time, aka how many requests are being sent.

With myself just being able to "Work" a PC, let have any knowledge of coding i have no idea if it`s at all feasible but i would hazzard a guess that it would involve re-coding the entire programming software.!
I would be interested to know from players with a background in programming what it would indeed require.:)

Subject: Pawn Privileges
A lot of suggestions, stirred and shaken brings me to one nightly-build yet ... :D

Pawns could have a one-month trial time as it is now.
Then a moves-restriction to (let's say) 40 pd would become effective.

During that month also visiting one fellowship could be possible.
That way all the features are easily to be prospected before deciding.

:D a veteran-pawn who just wants to make one quick chess game
would get along as well as everybody just spending an hour average here ...

the 20-games-restrictions should be handled tolerantly
in cases of someone qualifying for an additional round or, final ...

a thought I have had for long is to decrease the monthly fee
for Africa, India and perhaps even Russia aware of the clearly
lower income there ... Increasing the price for North-America,
the European Union and, Australia to let's say 18$
per semester would be tolerable then imho ... ~*~

If you don't care about the technical aspects of the site and its probklems, I understand, but why are you so annoyed that the info is there fior those who want it?

Pioneer54-- I agree with you on all points. Multiple panw IDs should not be allowed from the same IP address. If there really are tow different pawns using the same computer, oh well.

Subject: Re: logging ip's
Clearly, two PAYING MEMBERS who use the same computer (and therefore submit the same IP address) do not fall into the category of pawns (who, of course, do NOT pay) with multiple accounts.

A policy of one pawn account per IP address would be appropriate and weed out those who are breaking the rules. And yes, a few users who happen to share a computer due to same household or friendship would be alienated, although I suspect they are outnumbered by the cheats.

I appreciate that the tournaments are largely unfettered because of the "one per pawn at a time" rule, and perhaps Fencer is content to let it go at that. So be it, but as for casual games, the 20-game limit (or ANY limit) is virtually meaningless as long as any user may create more than one account.

Everyone: I am somewhat new to this site. I think it is the coolest and most oppurtunistic on the web! I realize that Fencer is doing his best to keep this site up to speed and I appreciate that very much. Thank you Fencer. About not being able to get on, I am a pawn myself and there have been times where I ran into a "technical problem" and couldn't get through. My feeling is that most pawns, when confronted with a problem such as this, will leave and find another site. I have stayed because I know people like Fencer are trying and as a pawn, I am an equal. MadMonkey is right, limiting moves increases accounts and slows even more. It will get better, just give it time.
