Subject: Backgammon blocked board
I'm caught again, rolling dice and no way of getting on. I face another four/five throws of wasted time.
Fencer, please could you put in a choice of auto-pass or double on the first blocked throw.

grenv: 'autopass or double' would be fine; that would sort out the problem very well. So would your other suggestion about resigning and offering one point. Both great ideas.

Subject: Re: Auto Pass in Backgammon
pgt: agree completely about the gammon situation; what we need is for the player who is bearing off to be able to finish the game, when he reckons the chance of a gammon has disappeared. That is what happens in over the board play.

Subject: Auto Pass in Backgammon
Could auto-pass be extended to include situations where we are in baulk, have to roll the dice but cannot get back on, because the oponent's home squares are blocked.
I know that there is a sentiment that you may want to double. I cannot conceive of a position, where a double would be wise.

Fencer: Ok, thank you for that link to Info. I can well understand your improvement here.
One thing; the Info refers to a filter above the game list to get the same results. Hanged if I can find that fikter; sorry, probably male tunnel vision. Where is it?

IWe used to be able to sort our games by oppoenent, game, time remaining, etc. That option seems to have disappeared. Or should I be resetting something.
it was a good feature, which I would like to have back again.

Subject: Backgammon Opening moves
For some time now, I have felt that my opponent's and my opening moves were identical. I shared this view with Walter Montego and he agreed. We decided that I do a test of 150 games to see how often the opening moves were the same, expecting a result of about 10, at odds of 15/1.
Out of the last 153 of my games, 57 had identical opening moves. Surely, this cannot be right; it needs looking into.

Could not auto-pass work, even when you need to roll the dice but there is no way on (ie all the opponent's home squares are blocked). In a real otb game, I would just sit back and wait for the other uy to clear a space. No way do I roll the dice!!

When I select a game and then see what tournaments I could join, the site shows ALL tornaments, even though where that particular game is 'full'.
It would be very helpful to show only those tournaments where entris for that game are still accepted.

nabla: I am not asking for the rating changes to be less (if i fall early on in a Pond, I deserve the crash in my rating!!0. What i want is for my new rating to be calculated as soon as I fall. Then I can concentrate on winning some Ponds to restore my rating.

coan.net: In ponds, ratings swing extravangently, especially when you fall in an early round.

Subject: Ponds Ratings
I have fallen early on in my Ponds, which have a 7 day time span. That means that my rating will be reduced by something like 250 points in around two months from now. Any wins I might get from now on won't make a shred of difference to that eventual outcome.
Therefore, I urge fencer to calculate a player's rating, as soon as he/she falls into a Pond.

Subject: Cloning Backgammon
Inthis game, you can get a piece off the board and absolutely no way of getting it back on. This happens often and it can stay that way for many moves.
Any chance of having an automatic 'Pass' without a player having to make a 'fruitless' move?

Subject: Re:
mctrivia: You have given me the answer!!
Let the 'doubling' affect just the Action Points.
If the player refuses the double, then the winner just collects 5 points.
If the player accepts the double and then loses, 10 points is DEDUCTED from his Action Points.
If the doubler loses, then 10 points is deducted from his Action Points total.
Perfect (the points may/will be different for pawns but the principle is the same).
Of course, some players may reckon that they will get more move points by playing on than refusing the double; perhaps the rules could NOT count any moves after a double.
