I don't know if anyone else has noticed (im sure some have) but Fencer has not been on here since yesterday lunchtime.
If he has not tried to do himself in over all this moaning, i for one think he deserves a break after 8 months of trying to keep this site running & being on here nearly all the time the last 2 weeks while Liquid has been on away.
I have just written to Liquid (through a 3rd party as he can not speak English) to see if he can answer any of the questions below.

jason: After a chat with Fencer about the site(database) problem, the target that we would need to reach is roughly $10,000 to get the server that he is looking at for the site.

There is always placing a site link to BrainKing in any e-mail u send to friends etc.... or on profiles of other sites.
This may make people come to BrainKing, the problem is getting them to become members so Fencer can improve the site.

Well we have to come up with something to cut down on all the posts. You have to admit that somedays it crazy (mostly down to quizes, which i love also).
No longer have you left the board to go back to your games & there is another 10 messages there LOL (and all the time thats more pressure on the server).

harley: As much as i agree with you (now that doesn't happen often LOL) i think the boards do need sorting out.
The quizes here are great fun & attract alot of attention. How about asking Fencer to create a board for them on there own (out of General Chat).
That could solve 2 problems:
1. People talking about other things and feeling they are getting in the way of the quiz.
2. Only make the quiz board avaliable at certain times of day/night - which could be done as we already know the times when the server is put under the most pressure.

OR may it have something to do with site access problems ??

There is a tournament in the Madhouse at the moment of which you are both members, only 2 people have signed up for it (both with 2000+ ratings) & me lol but niether of you have. I realise SPIDERMAN has exams so could be a problem, but i still fail to see why no one else is play with such high ratings, worried about losing maybe LOL

Subject: Re: auto refresh
I try to look at both sides of it, but must say i dont really see any need for it at all.
Is there any real difference between that & hitting the F5 key on a PC (None).
Going back to earlier when myself & tonyh were talking about it, if 120 people are on line & only 40 are playing games, BUT the other 80 have there refresh set at 10 seconds - surely this is just putting the server under pressure that isnt needed, as little as it may be.
I think that if a person does not make a move or do something on the site after a certain time either there auto-refresh could be disabled OR maybe they should just be logged off & have t log back on again.
Just a few thoughts :-)

I will ask a friend Kevin.
So maybe if someone was to leave there pc logged in & not do anything but refresh every minute or whenever it will slow down the server - maybe an auto-logout is not such a bad idea then ???

18. June 2003, 22:34:06
MadMonkey
I never noticed that with Knights as well, thats quite funny :-)

Does auto refresh count as a request being sent then, if you have 100 people just letting the screens refresh every minute that must have an effect - maybe not.......

I agree, considering i spend most my day (and night) on here lol, i have very few problems & just accept if i cant get on for a while & go to play a few games somewhere else. I suppose the only other thing with pawns is haveing the 20 games, but limiting moves per day, bu would that just lead to more i.d.s being created lol.

Subject: Re:
Is what i am saying Dmitri is that Pawns do not really know what they have to gain by becoming a Member.

It is not just about more tournaments & Fellowships, its the others small things like drop boxes etc... that to me make alot of difference as well.

Maybe someone should take the time to write down ALL the advantages of ungrading either to a Knight or Rook as i don't think it is very clear for them and they will never know unless told.

I don't quite know how we can give them less than they have now. They could have games cut from 20 to 10 or only be allowed on at certain times. I don't really think that would help a great deal though.

Subject: Re: Pawns - a thought........
Dmitri: Good point, i think that point should be made. Is what you are saying is that we don't need Pawns or that they should have a couple of days to decide to join or get kicked out - don't think that attitude will help anyone or the site.

Subject: Pawns - a thought........
I have been reading all that is being written about pawns etc..

As someone who does pay towards the site, i try to look at it from both sides.

I get fed up when i can not get on here at certain times & the reason may well be there are too many people online. How can we blame that just on pawns (we were pawns once). I reckon there are about 260 paying members (out of 5900), if all or even half the paying members logged on at the same time the server would overload anyway - how would that be stopped ??? - would we start limiting Knights (i think not !!).

We would not have so many games to play if we started limiting pawns more than they already are. Logging them off when the server gets to a certain level would lead to games timing out & more people getting upset. I think that pawns are happy with the deal they get, we all were before we decided to become paying members. That was our choice as it is theres. We know the benefits we get as paying members, maybe those benefits should be made more clear to pawns to encourage them to join.

At the moment it looks like we are trying to drive them away, which personally i think is wrong. I received a message from a pawn today who is no longer going to be playing here as they don't feel they are welcome & also there is a note on this board from one who is not playing here again - i think it is sad this is what is happening to this site.

All this running people down just because they may not be able to afford to join at the present time is totaly wrong. How do we expect this site to get better & grow when people are being made to feel not wanted here ?????

Subject: Re: problems accessing the site
I have to agree with most of everything written below. Fencer is working hard for the site, and has it has proved it must be good, not only by the increased numbers joining, but also the ones becoming paid members. Those of us who have been here a while will remember when before we had alot of down time he increased the length of our memberships to make up for it, and as was mentioned, the site is FREE. I can fully understand the paying members for complaining though. I do think that even they would give Fencer more credit for his hard work.

I am the same as everyone, i love the site and get annoyed when i can not play my games, but not all problems can not be solved just with a few lines of programming. Hopefully when the new server is up & running things will get better for everyone.

Fencer deserves thanking for providing such a great site. The more people that become members also helps as it raises funds, then of course he will be able to increase the power of the servers etc...

In a way we have all created our own problems, as the site is so good & Fencer talks to us like humans (more than you can say for other sites). We go to him with problems that he tries to solve as soon as he can. When we ask for all these odd little options etc.... he installs them, but remember, just like page loading, Discussion Boards and all those things we use to jump around the site puts pressure on the server.

I think that Fencer posting more information on the Board would help people understand how much is involved how hard it is to keep a busy site like this up & running.

Myself, am i am with harley, blaze and the rest that try to understand, Fencer, this is a great site & can only get better & better in time.
