Subject: Firefox problems
Hi there,
My firefox icon on my desktop changed its title from "firefox" to "vddf" .... what/why is this and should I worry?

The main reason I don't like Firefox is that my bookmarks always disappear... and I do mean always. What causes this and how do I prevent it?

Am I supposed to "personalize" Firefox in any way, not by adding extensions but somewhere on my computer where it differentiates between me and the other 2 users on this computer?

Finally, I'll bake a lovely cake for whomever will come and fix my problems.....

Binabik: sorry ! me as new at foxfire see's it not complete yet, in my opion not worth much i know, i would wait till it's complete as it is still in prosseses, so to speak. if you want it to do only certain things at this time it will do that. it has no botton clicks for toolbar and thats why i'm waiting, but others here brag on how fast pages load for here....no cake for me i'm a pudding person, lol

nightmagic: Thank you, I did notice a speed improvement when I first started to use it, but I have a suspicion I didn't complete the process, if that's the right word. I'm tempted to delete it and either start over or go to Opera, which hasn't lost my bookmarks, but which tends to pay overmuch attention to details here on BK...

nightmagic: What do you mean by "Firefox is not complete yet"? If you mean that is changing from time to time: yes, it is a product that is constantly improved. But it is "complete" in the meaning that it is totally ready for productional use. All changes are small improvements or new features, but I don't know anything you can do with IE but not with FF.
Firefox is actually a very mature browser so to speak.

Binabik: Why your icon is named "vddf" - I have no idea. Try to just rename it back to "firefox", that should work ;)

I never had a problem with disappearing bookmarks, but I heard about it just this week. There is an update for both, firefox 1.5 and firefox 2.0 which should fix it.

Firefox keeps a profile for every user on your system. (It's in "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Mozilla Firefox\Profiles").

Gordon Shumway: Thank you! I just wasn't sure if those different icon letters indicated some other problem....

Do you mean that I don't have to "go in there" and establish my own profile?

FF already updated itself to 2.0 - sorry, still don't trust it, it's lost my bookmarks too many times.

I also have Opera installed, but that seems to hiccup more on this site, though it never lost my bookmarks

And do you also use McAfee? I don't like Norton either....

Binabik: No, you don't have to, Firefox does this all on itself. And perhaps I didn't express myself clear enough: For both Firefox versions 1.5 and 2.0 there is an update available which should fix your problem. For Firefox 2.0 it's 2.0.0.2. So check your version number ("Help"->"about Firefox"). If it starts with 2.0 but is not 2.0.0.2, an update might solve the disappearing bookmarks. Something caused that in particular situations the profiles were created with a write protection, so that firefox couldn't store the bookmarks permanently. This should be gone with 2.0.0.2/1.5.0.10. If it still doesn't store them, you could manually check if the profile folder is write protected..

Gordon Shumway: Thank you so much! I hope that's true about the bookmarks, and I'll check my version of the update.
