Subject: Re: Games Editor & Dark Chess
tonyh: I know it's not the answer you are looking for, but what I would do is get some blank overhead projection sheets (Clear plastic paper), put them in a small binder. Get some dry erase markers and just draw your boards out. Very easy erase/write - you can make your board "big" and put a list of 3-5 pieces you might think is in a certain spot, etc... a lot more then what you could probable do with an on-line note board. (plus easier then to have Fencer program it also!)

... just an idea.

In the Players List, you can sort by "Level".

There are 3 King/Queen accounts
There are 172 Rook accounts
There are 81 Knight accounts

Hope this helps!

Subject: re: notes feature
Yea, one of my big things I would like to see is have any personal notes moved closer to the board (possible right above it) - or possible give users an option of where they would like it.

I ALWAYS will play a move, go down to submit and BOOM - Opps, there is my note from last time of what I was planning to do - so I would have to backup and do the move over again - that is if I wasn't in a rush and already hit submit while I was reading my own notes... :-(

Subject: Yet another Gammon idea
OK, #3 new game idea.

3. Domino Gammon.
- You start the game with choosing 3 domino tiles (or randomly assigned). So for example, you have a 2/4, 6/6, 0/2. Well on each turn, you can choose which one of the 3 tiles you would like to use to move your backgammon pieces. So for example you can choose the 6/6 as double sixes. After the turn, that piece is replaced with a new domino piece - and you keep the 2 unused pieces until your next turn. What this also does is the other player DOES see your tiles, so he will know the 3 possible "rolls" you will have and can plan his move around it - keeping you blocked for instance. Also, if you do not have any moves with any of your tiles, when you pass - you can also replace a tile with a new tile.

5. June 2003, 17:27:23

I would say all 4 pieces get sent to the bar.

Subject: Couple of new game ideas
I have a couple of ideas for a couple of game variations that I would like to see.

1. Dark Backgammon Race (or Regular/Nack/Crowded?)
- Basicly just like regular backgammon. You don't see ANY place that you don't have your own piece, so you will never be "blocked" and allowed to move to any place.

Now when you move to a place that is open, your piece stays there. If you move to a place that only has 1 opponent piece, you take it like normal gammon. If you move to a place that has 2 or more oppenent pieces, your piece will be placed back to the bar like it was taken out.

So this game would involve a lot more strategy - making you want to set up many places of 2 or more pieces to take away your opponents pieces when they land on you.

I believe this would be better as Dark Battleboats Race. Also I'm debating if it would be good to hide the opponents dice or not.

---------------------
2nd game idea!
---------------------
2. Backgammon Attack.
- Basicly it is the same as Backgammon, but with the rule that you can also win once you land and move your oppenets piece to the bar for the 10th time. I also think this would be good as Backgammon Race Attack - since then you could try to keep many of your own pieces in your own bar to come out and "attack" unprotected pieces that have been places in your area.

*** Note: I've added a copy of this post on the Backgammon and Nackgammon Discussion board so if you have coments on this idea, you can post them there!

Actually for mine, it is now gone - but on my friends account who does not play as ofter as I do, it is still on the main page.

So it might have to do with how many times it loads or something. (Guess we will have to wait for Fencer to let us know how it determins how long it stays up there!) :-)

As a side note, you can currently play a version of Hex and Twixt at LittleGolem.net -- so if anyone wanted to take a look at them, you can find those there!

I would be for adding them here. They are "different" games that are not found too many other on-line places.

Subject: Second thing
Is there any plans on stopping the clock for games? For the past two days, each time I have had a lot of free time to play games, I kept getting the "server is at it's max" message. Now I have a few days where I have little time to play games, and 188 games that need played! UGH! (Usually I would have them all played in the past 2 days, but with server problems....)

So a message to the other players I'm playing - sorry for the delay in our games - probable be a couple of days until I can sit down and play all my games (unless there are more server problems, and it might be longer... :-( )

Yea, I have now found that I have that bug for at least 2 of the discussion boards (That is, the bug that the new message does not show up next to the discussion board)

I was unaware that it was a paid member only option (but makes since - since non-paid users don't have many games and would not need something like that)

Fencer - Are there other little things that are for paid members only - if so, it might help to list them somewhere (possible on the paid membership page) - you never know which little feature a user will like which might make them pay for a membership! :-)

I'm not sure if my problem is the same that was listed below, but I just recently used this option for the first time, and here is what happened.

Game is up - I hit "Play Later"
- Goes to next game
- Play next game and hit submit (go to next game)
- goes back to the game that I wanted to play later (this time with no option to choose "play later" again.)

... now I'm not sure if that is how it is suppose to work, but it would be nice it "play later" would move it to the bottom of my list of games. (Since I still have 100+ unplayed games)

... I hope I explained that well enough. :-)

Subject: First move advantage
I know in tournaments, some of them can be set up where you play 2 games with each person - one of each color.

Fencer said awhile back it was on his to-do list to do the same for non-tournament games. (Not sure how far up/down on the list it is)

But if that does come along, if you are worried about which color you are, you may just want to try to play the 2 games (one of each color) games.

I believe I'm doing it correct - the box that says "Move and go to:"

I'll choose a totaly different game like Backgammon, but it will still go to a Stack4 game which was next in the list.

(It's not a big deal for me since I normally don't use this feature - just testing it since others said they had problems) :-)

Could the problem be that on the "Move" button, I have the "Set this action as default" for the "go to the next game" - and it is somehow taking over the "Move and go to:" button below it also?

Subject: re: time out
I think Fencer had said it is on his to-do-list to order the games by time, but it takes some extra processing power, so he was either going to updated things first, or try to find out how to do it without slowing the site down anymore.

How I get around it when I have a few games that are close to timing out - is I will open each of the games I'm short on time in a new window (so I'll have 5-6 windows open - each with games that need played quickly.) Or if you don't like to do that, just always submit and go back to main page - and pick the next game according to time... (Until Fencer can get this implemented.)

Hope this helps!

When it was first talked about making the dropdown box, I did not think I would like it - but since you can make it a "default" for the option you like the best - I like it! :-)

Subject: My own question!
On my "Main page", I have for the total number of started games as: 149 + 1

Now I know the "+ X" number is the games that are just waiting for the tournament creater to start - and with it just being a "1", I'm guessing it is a 2nd round where only 2 players have advanced (meaning only 1 game)

My problem is that it has been on there for about a week now, I have looked to see if there are any waiting tournament for me, and there are none. I have also looked through the running games, and have found nothing.

Is there any way I can find out what this "+ 1" game is?

Thanks in advance!

yea, it is pretty interesting. I'm not sure how this site keeps track of how many un-read messages in each board, but to me it just seems that possible the "counter" for me on the Feature board got corrupted or something - so it is not keeping the correct count.

This message does not appear in my Favourite Boards list, and does not appear when I click on the main "discussion boards" link.

One of the reasons I keep on bringing this up is I'm not sure if this is the only board I'm having this problem - it's the only board that I've noticed - and being a Moderator for some of the boards - I would hate for this feature to be "broke" on those boards also - or it might be weeks before I check on them....

I think it would be nice if the winner of a tournament to get a message saying "congrates on winning" or something".

Why I say that is I usually just play games, and I don't really pay attention on how I'm doing in the tournament. As I look through some of the past tournament, I noticed I won one of them - Cool! I can see how I could have missed this if I did not go searching.... and will get worse as more tournaments finish and the list gets longer and longer.

Subject: Couple of suggestion
First: I play games from a fast public computer part of the day - which I always Logout before I leave the computer. Earlier today when I got ready to leave, I ran into a problem - the site was temporarly down for an "upgrade". So that left me with 2 things I could do: (1) wait for who knows how long until the site comes back up so I can "logout" or (2) leave myself logged in and hope no one gets in there and messes things up.

I'm not sure if it is possible, maybe something you (Fencer) can think about - but possible being able to logout while the site is down for upgrades? I was lucky that I had an extra 5 minutes to wait and logout, but sometimes I do not have the extra time to wait.

Second Suggestion:

I really like having a list of Favourite Boards and a list of the Fellowships that I belong to on my main page..... but I find it king of wasting space to have both the Fellowship & the Fellowship board listed. Would there be a way to "combine" the two - that is in the list of Fellowships thats on the right of my screen, put the (2 new) message there instead of having to place the board in my favourite just to find out there are new post there.

As a general comment / suggestion - I would love to see more games here that is not found on ItsYourTurn (Other then Battleboats... I would love to see that here!)

But as I look at the features in development - I'm very interested in Jungle because 1) I never played it 2) I don't know what it is 3) I have not seen it on other sites.

One of the reasons I like Littlegolem.net is because they have a few games that are not on other sites - like DVONN, Hex, Word Game, and Twist.

So as a general request - I would love to see new and different games here. (plus Battleboats!) :-)

Subject: Re: Discussion Board
As for how the Discussion board is setup on IYT, I also do not like that much.

If I was to set up a discussion board, the only example on a game site that I can think of is LittleGolem.net - that is you see just see all the subjects - and how many replies are in the subject. Once you click on the message thread that you want to read - ALL messages in the thread are displayed. That way if you want to read about a certain topic, you can - and if you want to not read about a topic, you don't have to!

But again, I would rather see new games fixed then have the time spent on the discusion board.... this is a game site, not a chat site anyway... :-)

But I would rather see Fencer's time developing new games like Battleboats (which hopefully will come soon) then to see his time improving the discussion board. (Maybe something to look at once he runs out of other things to do...)

Exactly - and if there were 2 different ratings (one for fun non-tournament, and one for tournaments), that would solve a lot of the problems that was described before.

That way the people who come here and play for fun - play non-tournament games with frieds will still have a rating system to help judge their skills.

Subject: High rated Players
... I quickly read through the last 20 or so message, so if this has been suggested as a solution, sorry.

Why not have 2 types of ratings? 1 for non-tournament games, and 1 for tournament games. This way if people just want to play the "easy win" games, they can do it as a non tournament - but play tournament games where your color is random (if it's not a new 2 player match), and a little more accurate of a players true skills.
