At the top of the "Message box" page, just enter your own name as the one to send a message to. :-)

I know some people will not like this idea, but I would love to see in a person profile where a person has signed on from/IP address. (Something like: Last logon from: 192.100.231.40) This would allow other user to do their own "investigation" to see if people are signing in with multiply ID's, trying to cheat tournaments, etc.... Sooner or later I'll probable have a prize tournament, and I would like to be able to see if people are trying to cheat or not.

Subject: Battleboats Suggestion
I belive being able to see the other persons ships after the game is over has been suggested before, and I believe it is on fencers "to do" list.

BUT, here is my suggestion (if it is possible): If a battleboat game is timed out, do NOT show the other persons boat for at least 3-4 days. Since this site does have server problems every once and awhile, and does cause some games to time-out and restored again - it would be very unfair fo someone to have a chance to see where the other persons's boats are then have the game reinstated. You would then have to start the game all the way over - again, not fair to the person ahead. So if that is not possible, I would vote to leave it how it is - you can't see the other person's boat.

NOTE: I've wondered about where someone's boat were and I did a pertty simple thing - I asked them and they told me where they were!

Subject: re: Tournament
Yea, I do think that came up before... and if I remember correctly, Fencer was going to try to take that extra step out (along with the extra step when you create a tournament.... (step 1. Close Tournament. step 2. Start tournament) I think it might be one of those things on Fencers list, but not too high on the list. I'm sure Fencer will say something once he logs on.

My questions sort of on the same subject.

What happens to tournaments once the creator goes from a rook to a pawn? Can the creator still do things with current tournament that had already been started or created even though he is a pawn now?

Also lets say a rook is in a fellowship tournament and becomes a pawn - does he forfet all the fellowship tournament games when he drops to a pawn (and kicked out of all fellowships?)

I don't plan on giving up my rook status any time soon, but sooner or later these questions will come up! :-)

Subject: different levels
Well it is important to know who is at which level for many different reasons - and having it as a pawn-knight-rook makes it really simple to know who each person is.

Some examples of how I use these different levels:

1. When I'm inviting people to my fellowships, I know to only invite knights and rooks and not to invite pawns.

2. When I'm starting my tournaments, if it is a limited "5 person" tournament - I now know to look at all pawns and rooks to make sure they have enough games open before starting the tournament - so they don't get removed and the tournament does not get deleted.

... this is a couple of quick reasons why the current system works well for me - I find it very handy to know what lever a person is really quickly..... and to change it would be a pain to me, and I'm sure to many others also.

Having "colors" would just confuse people on who is a "higher paid member", a "middle paid member", and a "non-paid member".

I like it how it is - because as long as anyone knows much about chess - it is easy to tell how is the "bigger" people around here - not that the "bigger" people are better then others - just they have paid and have more games and options.

For example it is easy to know not to invite a pawn to my fellowship.

On my screen, I have the "Game notation" on the right side of the board which tells me where my last shot was... including all my shots before that. I almost always look at that to see what I've been doing in a game before I make my next move.

coan.net
Note: If you limit the number of pawns who can have access to this site at one time, you will soon get pawn that once they come here and play their games - they will not leave - just keep refreshing for hours so they don't "lose their spot" :-)

It's a good idea, but I just don't think it will work!

Pioneer54: yea, I've been getting the "temporarily down" page a lot today also. Just (finaly) got done playing the games which will time out in the next 24 hours - and I guess I'll go do yard work today - hopefully later today I'll be able to play some more! :-)

Subject: automatic moves
An additional note:

The way I would do it is if you are playing, and the opponent had only 1 move (or pass) to do - then you can then play your next move (and so on and so on) until the other player can move.

Then when the other player goes to the game, they will see a note: "Because of automatic moves, your opponent moved XX times. Would you like to go through each move or go strait to current move?"

That way for inexperianced players can go through all the moves to see what happened, and others can just skip what they know is going to happen and start playing more quickly!

coan.net
If I remember correctly, Fencer does not really like it because people would not be able to write messages to each other after each move. I think it would help out in a few different games, and I don't think it would bother many people that they can't talk after each move, but it's not my site so ...??? :-)

31. July 2003, 19:06:18
coan.net
The "auto move" option has been suggested a few time before, and as I understand it - Fencer does not like that option, so it is unlikely that you will see it here. (I like the option - it would save a lot of time - heck I'm in a crowded gammon game right now that I know the other person is going to have to pass for at least the next 10 moves if not more...) :-)

Subject: Remove players from Tournaments
I'm currently removing a few players from my Under 1500 Checkers for dummies tournament because a few players now have a rating over 1500.

Anyway, I've notice that all you have to do is click "remove" and *poof* they are gone.

Possible Problem: It would be very easy for someone to accedently click on this and remove a player they did not mean to remove.

My Suggestion:

When you click "remove" to remove a player, have it come up with a screen that says "Are you sure you want to remove this players".

I think it would also be nice to have a message box there and automatically send a message to anyone who is removed (so they know they were removed) - and also allow the tournament creator to write a message.

So if the creator does not write a message, the removed person will get a message like "You were removed from *THIS* tournament".

And if the tournament creator does write a message, the removed person will get a message like: "You were removed from *THIS* tournament. The Tournament creator had this to say: XXXXXXXXX"

OK, that is all! :-)

I'm not sure if I'm still having the problem that I wrote down below (I'll try to check to see if I'm still having this problem)

But a new small problem - now I have some of the people's message from many turn before stuck on the top. So I have a "Good Luck" from 5-6 moves before (still only in Battleboats)

Anyway, thought I would post a quick update. :-)

Subject: Small BattleBoats error
I think this was mentioned before somewhere, but it may have gotten overlooked - so I'll post it again.

In some Battleboat games, the message that the other person writes got strait to the bottom to the "archive" area.

It's not a big problem, but it does cause you to miss what the other person has wrote some of the times.

As I try to "troubleshoot" it, I've notice that it does the same thing all the way through the game - and that it has happen to me while I'm both White and Black. (I know of 2 games currently that have this problem - and I can give you those game ID's if you think it will help)

Subject: re: Fellowships
danoscheck: I tried to suggest this before, but I don't think I ever explained it well enough.

I would love to see the "New message" notification next to the Fellowship.

As Eriisa said, right now you have to add each Fellowships board into your favorite - so now I have have so many boards & Fellowships on my list - I have to scrool down to see if there are new messages in my favorites.

2 good things would come from putting the "new message" next to the fellowship:

1. It would save from people to have to put each fellowships board in their favorite - which will save room on the main page also since you will not have each fellowship/board listed twice.

2nd: Some people join fellowships but forget to check the message boards (or to put them in the favorites) With the "new message" next to the Fellowship, it may make the fellowships a little more active.

harley: I think you make a good point, which maybe if this autopass feature was made, it should not be an option, but a real thing.

I think it should be an option for a person to see EACH move or to quickly skip to the screen they can play. And what I mean about that, lets say I'm stuck on the bar. When the screen comes to me, I get a message right at the top that says something like "Because you could not make any move, the game has automaticly passed XX moves for you. Would you like to see each move or go strait to the screen which you can play" - then there is an option "Next move" or "Current move"

Even though I understand why Fencer did/does not want to do the autopass thing, I would still vote for autopass. (just in case he see's enough people wanting it, he might reconsider)

Subject: Re: Tournament Invitations
I thought of that awhile back, and I think that if there was an option of "invite players to a tournament" it would end up getting abused.

I can just see some of the tournament creators going down the list of ranked users and inviting EVERY person for each tournament - I'll probable end up with spam for each tournament (which there is a lot if you include Fellowship tournament).

Of course for the private tournaments Fencer is working on, it would need to be able to invite people - but for normal tournament, i'm not sure if I would like that option. :-)

In the user's profile, you can see their Wins, Draws, Losses, and BKR.

Is it possible to add the rating positions along with them? I find them to be very interesting.

For example my 2055 rating in Backgammon Race is 1st, but the same 2055 rating in Five in Line would end me up in 39th place!

So it seem's like the change just does not happen right away. I hope I explained it well enough. (I expect if I just wait awhile, it will probable change to the correct default after awhile - like it did before, but that does not really solve the problem) :-)

I would think this would be in the same category as "Auto-Passing" for games where you have to pass.

Fencer is against Auto-Passing (Where the computer will auto-pass for you if all you can do is Pass your turn). So it sounds like a good idea, but I don't think you will see it here any time soon.

Well I hope you are right that it does not take much out of the server - with 2 request for each game - some players playing 1,000+ moves a day (2,000 time it checks to see if user is on-line, and if so find out what user is doing & display what they are doing on the screen - just for 1 player!).

I know Fencer said it would take too much out of the server to be able to "move to next game according to time". I would think this would take more out of the server as this new "nosy opponent" option, but I'm sure it does take some. :-)

17. June 2003, 06:16:04
coan.net
... but if we are still on a slower server which gets too busy at times, do we really need the server making an extra calculation/pull of information for each and every game board that is pulled up?

If Fencer can come on and tell me it takes no more out of the server, well no problem - but if it does take a little more out of the server, I at least think it should be an option that is turned off by default and users who want to have it to be able to turn it on.

17. June 2003, 05:54:06
coan.net
I don't find it annoying, but I do find it a bit usless (and probable taking more from the server by showing it).

I would guess some people like to know what their on-line opponent is doing, but I believe it should be an option that can be turned off in the Setting. (Or better yet, by default have it off and have the option to turn it on.)

Screen Chess: When I clicked on the piece, it did not remove it. (I ended up "clearing" the whole board and just starting over because I did not want that one piece there!)

Battleboats vs. Dark Battleboats: Dark Battleboats you do not know that you even sunk any ships. Battleboats - you know that you sunk a ship (you just don't know which one for sure).

Battleboats Plus - I believe this is in the works (hopefully soon). I'm guessing (just guessing) Fencer is making sure that Battleboats is working good before creating the newer versions.

I kind of like it the way it is - it give you a little more strategy when placing your boats (possible next to each other) since the other person may not know which boat they sunk or not.

But if this is changed, hopefully it is just to "new" games and not to games already in progress.

For the new games (Battleships, Screen Chess, & Crazy Screen Chess), these games involve setting up your own board.

So in the Game editor, you can make and "save" your favorite boards so you can use them in many games (Set them up once, use them many times)

(Side Note: DO NOT use the same board too often, or others might figure it out and make an easy win against you!)
