Subjekt: Re: Time limits
diogenysos: It is a good idea. However, it would require to change the way how BrainKing handles occasional site down events (caused by upgrades, temporary line down problems etc.).
As you know, BrainKing automatically disables timeouts for 24 hours if a downtime is longer than 60 minutes. It would not help in case of, say, 10 minutes site inactivity, which would cause all 3 minutes games timeouted just when the site comes back to online status.
What do you propose now?

Subjekt: Re: Time limits
Fitzmertz: 1) Some people will be always unhappy (I don't mean MadMonkey but I could name a few).
2) No product can make you 100% happy forever. When I bought my current home computer in 2006, I had been very happy and satisfied with it. Now I am not but it does not mean that I would start to send unhappy emails to the vendor and ask him to make the disks faster and WiFi adaptor more stable.
3) The Paid Membership page clearly describes what you get when you buy a membership. It says nothing like "once you become a paying member, the site owner is committed to make you happy until your membership expires".
4) It is very important to keep a balance between happy and unhappy people on BrainKing. The past showed us that all attempts to make everyone satisfied are direct ways to our doom.

Thad: So you think that in order to make a good business, it is necessary to make everyone happy? That's funny. The world is fully of small companies which bankrupted only because of following this kind of business plan.

Subjekt: Re: Time limits
mctrivia: BrainKing always gives you a choice. Who does not like slow tournaments, can join or create fast ones. Who does not like that a couple of games take years to finish, can upgrade his account to a level with no limit of simultaneously started games - then why should a long lasting tournament be a problem?
"It needs to be fixed" is a relative concept. If something is really important, it is fixed, of course. Everything else depends on my choice. When I choose not to fix it, it won't be fixed (or it might be fixed later). Who does not like it, there is always a choice to find another site to play on. Plain and simple.
That was the "short answer". Sort of.
And making some people upset is a part of the strategy. Especially the previous sentence.

KnightFighter: Thank you Andy. Obviously you know what it is all about and I agree with you. It is always a pleasure to read a response of this kind.
Others who still feel "badly treated" or "with an improper attention": There is always a short answer and a long one. The short answer would simply recall what I usually say, the long response is more descriptive, but I should warn you first - it will make certain people annoyed, or even more insulted than before. Anyway, I am not afraid of saying what I really think about it (unlike many other site owners).
Make your choice.

Subjekt: Re: 3rd party app
Thad: When you subscribed a Brain Knight level, you might have noticed how many tournaments you are allowed to play simultaneously and it could give you a hint why the majority of paying members choose a Brain Rook instead. I will not many ANYTHING faster only because you threaten not to renew your membership - that is, usually, the least effective kind of attempt.

Subjekt: Re: 3rd party app
mctrivia: That's partially true but you forget one important thing - all points you have listed may bring a revenue in a longer time persepective, not instantly. On the other hand, hardware and connection issues usually happen immediately and without further warning, not to mention other aspects which are tightly related to them.
So I have to repeat myself - a further support for 3rd parties can be done when there is time for it. Otherwise, our full effort is focused on things which bring a revenue a little faster.

Subjekt: Re:
mctrivia: I am sure that you understand that adding new features for 3rd parties which don't generate any additional income can be done only when there is time for it. It surprises me how many smart people don't see (or don't want to see?) that to maintain a site of BrainKing size does not mean only to confirm new accounts and read complaints from certain users. There are tens of other tasks and processes (not just programming ones but of marketing, economical, legal and such types) which must be done to keep this site alive and keep the membership fees as they are, although the current status of world economics should make me to increase them.

Anybody else who wants to complain about anything - it is your right, of course, but please, think again before you do it. As long as BrainKing is owned by me, I set the priorities and I decide what is the best for the whole site itself, not just a selected group of users. And I really don't care how many people don't agree with it and, especially, how many people think how arrogant and unfriendly I am.

Subjekt: Re:
Czuch: If I want money, I would close BrainKing and start an absolutely different business. Don't be ridiculous. Everybody knows that these clicking programs don't make anybody rich. The real purpose is to make some tests and try out some theories. And, as a side effect, to help BrainKing users who cannot afford to pay for a membership. But, of course, there is always someone who says bad things about any experiments.

Subjekt: Re:
Czuch: 1) coan.net is right.
2) There are even more background tasks going on.
3) Too many new features means too many new bugs. It's easier to maintain a site with less features. Furthermore, a typical user wants just to play tons of backgammon games as quickly as possible.
4) There were many features added in the recent past but since they don't affect the English speaking community, it is very likely that you didn't notice them.
5) It is not possible to address all feature requests. Ergo, only the most important ones are implemented. Sometimes.

rednaz23: It would cause a server load increase if the list of online opponents has to be calculated on every page. Unlike the list of online friends (which is more static than dynamic because you don't change your friends every day - or do you? ), online opponents list depends on your current started games list which can be, in some cases, very long and time-consuming to be parsed for each page request.
