Subject: brainking and firefox
If you are like me, you don't know enough about computers. You've been hearing a lot of talk about BrainKing and Firefox vs. Internet Explorer. You have Internet Explorer and aren't interested in downloading something to replace it.

I downloaded Firefox tonight, and it works quite well.

For those of you who don't know:
- Firefox is free to download.
- You can have both Explorer and Firefox on your computer. You don't have to replace the Internet Explorer that you are used to. You can use both.
- Downloading is easy. Go to google. Type in Firefox download. You will get options like Mozilla Firefox free download. Just download it. It won't hurt.
- You can always get rid of it if you don't like it.

Fencer: It worked. Thank you for your response, F. By the way, I think the ice graphics are very good. My problem was that a pawn would not move diagonally after the move 21 freeze, but would move straight. Then the move wouldn't register after I moved, so I would have to keep trying. Anyway, all is good.

Pedro Martínez: I am glad to hear that about the Ice Age. When I try to play out the moves on your game from the beginning, however, nothing shows up when I click the links for the 1st or 2nd moves. Is that the same from your point of view?

I think I figured it out. Some pieces could move and some couldn't. I don't understand, but I got a move in. Sorry to disturb everyone...

I see. My pieces didn't disappear. I just can't send any moves. Well, they send, but then the game appears as though I never sent a move. I'll keep trying different pieces.

The only game of Ice Age Chess that was finished ended after one move when one player resigned. I am playing a game of Ice Age Chess, and on move 21 all the squares froze over with ice and now there is some bug with the game. Has anyone made it past move 20 on ice age chess?

Besides, the incidences of the problems with people who want the old unfinished games deleted outweigh the number of "two friends two years" scenarios...

18. January 2007, 07:33:20
goodbyebking
If they are friends, I think that they would let a game go unfinished, and in two years, start another. Two years is a long time not to be on brainking! (I'm on every day...) Between friends, one game can be let go, I think.

Subject: no time-outs
In response to Fencer's newest post regarding Fischer clocks and games that are set to zero so that they never time out: "If you know how to solve this small problem, please let me know."

We should set a limit on what constitutes an inactive player. If a player doesn't move in any game, for, say, nine months or a year, then we could describe them as inactive. Then, if a player has started a game with no time limit, that game should be forfeited once that player has reached the inactive point.

Subject: global IPs
Regarding Fencer's latest posting (on Brainking.info), concerning players from around the world...
It would be interesting to see accurate statistics on where players are actually playing from. Some players say they are from countries that they are actually not from (I always get my hopes up when a player says they are from Tibet). It would be nice, since Fencer is able to, to see one set of accurate statistics showing how many players actually play from their own countries. I know how time-consuming that would be I guess...

I knew that about the rankings lists, but all of my "red" dates are for games that I played less than four of. I just never noticed that the date and time turned red on "My profile", "Finished games".
Thank you everyone, I have a thorough understanding now :)

I've noticed little red dates and times in brackets to the right of finished games on "My profile". Does that indicate that I haven't played a certain type of game for a long time? I must have missed that update. Do records of games ever delete, like, for example, if a game was tried once two years ago...?

Subject: Re: ratings
Grandmaestro: I disagree (respectfully)...
A lot of my ratings have got pretty low at times, but I like to fight back. The way ratings work is that, as your skill improves, you can always climb up as high as your skill takes you. I enjoy that fight. It would be misleading if you just "reset" every time you lost a few games. Right now, my goal is to get all of my established ratings back over 1500. I think that the reset idea isn't valid.

Subject: Re:ratings...
Pedro Martínez: I don't think that we should be able to reset ratings... However, Hasami Shogi is a game I regret even being rated for, as it is utterly biased towards the person who moves first. I would like to wipe off all records of a rated game type, with the caveat that I can never play it again on this site. Hasami shogi would be the one I would wipe off as it is unfair. I am only responding, but I know that I should put this on the feature requests board, and I will...

Franz Kafka: Man, when in doubt, try some chess variations... These seperate the poseurs from the real players. I often check another player's ratings in other games before I play them... You should stick around. This is a great site. (Even if a few people did cheat, it's not about the winning so much as the process of playing that is enjoyable.)

My girlfriend (whom I live with) recently planned a trip to New York and Toronto. She started a BK account so that we could play and chat while she was across the country. Her name on BK is ultramarine. Our first few moves were from the same IP address (our home computer) so that I could show her how the site works. Our subsequent moves were made from different locales.
Is there a way to register couples and families who use the same IP address? When she comes back in November I would never want anyone in BK adiminstration to think that I cheat.

I have always thought that everyone should stay with one fellowship (for all games). That way a greater sense of team fidelity could be nurtured. It would inspire greater competition between fellowships and that would probably be more fun.

tenuki: Yes. Deactivate automatic vacation.
I just submitted a bug report on this situation, but it is probably a vacation issue. In a tournament with a five day per move limit, weekends off, my opponent has not moved in 13 days. With the weekend here, I'm sure I won't see a move for at least another two. It's too bad, because this involves a tournament, and in this situation a tournament could last over a year.
