1970 - Rock singer Janis Joplin died in Hollywood at age 27 of an overdose of heroin. She had just finished recording her second solo album, Pearl, which later earned a gold record. It was once written of Joplin that she lacked "the necessary degree of honest cynicism needed to survive an all-media assault."

Love singer Lee dies aged 61
Arthur Lee, the singer and songwriter with the pioneering Sixties band Love, has died aged 61 after a lengthy battle with leukaemia.

The musician died on Thursday afternoon in hospital in Memphis.

Love's most famous album was the 1968 bestseller Forever Changes.

Lee, who is survived by his wife, Diane, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in February and received a rare umbilical cord blood transplant in May at Methodist University Hospital.

But a hospital spokeswoman said he never left the hospital after that.

He formed Love in Los Angeles in 1965 and the group released their self-titled debut album the next year under the newly-formed Elektra Records.

They released a total of three albums fusing rock, blues and psychedelia.

In the 1990s, Lee spent time in jail for illegal possession of a firearm.

But he made a successful comeback in 2002, touring the US and Europe with a new band line-up.
