Small dog kills 6-week-old girl in California
October 9, 2000
Web posted at: 6:17 AM EDT (1017 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A small Pomeranian dog killed a 6-week-old baby while the infant's caretaker briefly left the child unattended to warm a bottle of milk, authorities in Los Angeles said.

The relative, who was caring for the infant girl, found her head buried in the dog's mouth Saturday night, sheriff's Deputy Cruz Solis said. The girl died of head trauma at an area hospital, he said.

When you think of dangerous dog breeds, which animal do you picture: a pit bull or a wiener dog?

According to the results of research published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science, the breed most prone to aggression is the dachshund. New research that involved questioning 6,000 dog owners, found that one in five dachshunds have bitten (or tried to bite) strangers, a similar number have attacked other dogs, and that one in 12 have even snapped at their owners.

Prior research on dog aggression focused solely on dog bite statistics. Using that data, breeds like Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and Dobermans were thought to pose the most danger. Researchers now feel prior studies were not painting a full picture, as most dog bites (especially those of smaller dogs) go unreported and were not included in the past.

Chihuahuas ranked second on the list of aggressive dogs, while Jack Russell Terriers came in third.

Just like with people, it's not fair to stereotype an entire group based on the actions of a few. But it's also good know some small dogs might not be the ideal choice for children.

Jim Dandy: I agree 100% that the racing should not be banned...horses run, they enjoy it,I DO think tho, that in light of the recent deaths of 2 horses newer tougher rules need to be in place,if something is broke, fix it..the racing industry,I feel is broken right now.
Believe me,I eat, breath, sleep, live dogs and the dog sport I participate in,so I can relate to the people that are into horses.BUT,when we see something in our sport that does not work,we stive to come up with solutions to fix it,and I think that is what the racing industry should do also.

Jim Dandy: I have never been overly keen on horse racing.I DO understand these animlas are bred and born to run...so,with that said...I guess I would be MORE ok with the sport IF changes were made (see petition I asked people to sign a few posts ago)
I think that they should run the horses on surfaces that are a bit softer on the legs/joints of the horses.
Waiting until the horse is done growing..I don't know much about horses, not going to sit here and pretend that I do,but I have read at the age this female was at,her bones/joints were not fully formed? Why not wait until they ARE? I don't go taking my dogs jumping and climbing the wall at a young age because the joints are still like jelly,WHY take a chance on causing more damage?
And also the whipping part...OMG,ever since I was little I have HATED how the jockey whips the horse.IF they insist on keeping this as part of the race then after the race is over, the jockey should also be whipped as many times as he whipped that horse.
I think these are some little things the industry could look at,maybe change some way of doing things so that everyone involved is happy and so that the horses can do what the horses were born to do,but be SAFER while doing it....anymore thoughts on this???

Subject: dolphins in captivity
A performing dolphin called Sharky has died during a live stunt show at Discovery Cove, in Orlando, Florida, owned by brewery and theme park operator Anheuser-Busch.

Sharky - a 30-year-old female bottlenose - collided mid-air with another dolphin while leaping out of the water during a show.

In what WSPA considers to be a sad reminder of the unacceptable cruelty inherent to keeping dolphins in captivity, Sharky suffered head injuries and died soon afterwards.

The other dolphin, a 13-year-old male called Tyler, is currently under veterinary supervision.

Sharky's accidental death while performing tricks marked the end of a degraded life, deprived of even the most basic natural instincts and trained - using methods that often include food deprivation - to perform unnatural and dangerous tricks.

The majority of dolphins in captivity are captured violently from the wild. Scientists estimate that for every wild dolphin taken captive, another is injured or killed in the process. Claims that these facilities have conservation interests at heart do not change the fact that this is a cruel and exploitative industry.

Anheuser-Busch currently holds 67 captive bred and 10 wild caught dolphins in Orlando. At this time, WSPA has been unable to determine whether Sharky was captive bred or wild caught. We do know that most dolphins in US facilities are now bred in captivity and that it has been around 20 years since US facilities have participated in capture of dolphins from the wild.

It is no secret that the intelligence of dolphins is on par with that of the great apes. It is clear that no captive facility - not even the world-famous tourist destination that is SeaWorld - can adequately provide for dolphins' complex social and behavioral needs, or recreate their vast ocean habitat.

Claire Bass, Marine Mammals Programs Manager for WSPA said: “The World Society for the Protection of Animals urges people who care for the welfare of these remarkable animals to help keep dolphins wild - never visit them in captivity. Tourist cash is what keeps attractions like this in business.”

Spring brings bloody waters in Norway - the whaling season has started
May 2008

Norwegian whalers yesterday made the first kill of the season: a calf. Though the majority of Norwegians are against the cruelty inflicted by whaling, Norwegian whalers are set to kill 1,052 whales in the hunts that started on Wednesday morning.

The Norwegian whaling season, which normally runs from April to August, began with the killing of a Minke whale calf. Sadly this will be the first of up to 1,052 whales which Norway is set to kill this season, in hunts which result in prolonged and extreme suffering as many whales do not die straight away.

Data from the Norwegian Government itself reveals that 1 in 5 whales suffer long and painful deaths, some taking an hour or more to die after being hit with explosive harpoons. A recent poll showed that almost two thirds of Norwegians believe that it is unacceptable for a whale to take more than 15 minutes to die once shot.

The start of this year's season follows news in early April that Ellingsen Seafood, Norway's largest whale meat supplier, plans to stop producing whale meat in 2009. Ellingsen is currently responsible for processing approximately a third of the total catch each year.

WSPA programs manager Claire Bass said:

“The appetite for whaling in Norway is dwindling: only 1 in 4 Norwegians under 30 strongly support the continuation of whaling in their country. It's clear that this cruel and outdated industry is on borrowed time in a progressive country like Norway.”

Subject: Spring post
Well, now that spring has FINALLY sent winter on it's way...it's time for me to make my spring time post about the baby animlas again!!
I would just like to remind everyone that when you see a baby animal, and he is squacking and carrying on like a fruitloop,PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE do NOT assume that he has been abandoned/orphaned...chances are that his Mom is somewhere off on the sidelines watching the baby.Animals do not "coddle" their young as long as we think they do...they often let them venture out to experiment in the real world fairly early, but ALWAYS under a watchful eye....Unless you SEE that the mother is dead...hit on the side of the road, for example...DO NOT PICK UP THE BABIES TO HELP THEM!!!
There are not to many things more heartbreaking then listening to a mother wailing for her young that has been "helped away" by some human!!!

I DO know tho that just because a dog shows certain things as a pup, does not mean they develope into adulthood with the same traites. The very first time Niki was introduced to Damien, she licked his mouth first thing...I thought..OH GOODIE!!!! she IS a submissive type!! well, let me tell you that Lil Miss Niki is NOT that way anymore, lol!! She is in her "teenage years" right now (she is 8 months old) and I think just like any teen, they want to test the limits with the family....I know she is testing them with me right now..she is going through her I THINK I hear my Mom calling for me but I will run the other way and keep playing anyways stage, lol.Oh curse the day that Damien hit that phase!! They both bring me such great joy tho!!

Niki also does this new thing, she bounces everywhere that she goes...like tigger, lol!! She doesn't walk, not run,not even that famous GSD trot..she bounces!! TO CUTE!!!

srnity: yes on everything you said, lol!!! The one thing tho that I REALLY need to point out is the dominance thing that you mentioned, and the fact that Jim says he will be getting a puppy.....the most dominate dog as a pup may well grow up to be a bit more submissive then you would think (that is the case with my Damien) and a pup that was EXTREMELY submissive (that would be my Niki) might well grow up to surprise the crap out of you and BECOME dominate!! D was dominate as a pup, pretty laid back now..and Niki, well I picked her BECAUSE she was very submissive to Damien, which was wonderful because at that time he was still pretty dominate...as she gets older she is becoming extremely dominate..so much in fact that she is challanging D for the dom statues between the 2 of them

Maybe,Jim would consider an older or 1 or 2 years old that maybe had come from a cat family?? not all dogs are strays, alot do have a history.

Thanks everyone!! She is doing well today..was a bit rough yesterday after I got her home..she wouldn;t eat,she got sick to her lil tummy, she was a bit cranky to Damien, which he couldn't figure for the life of him, lol. He was very gentle with her tho, nuzzled her tummy a bit. When they would go outside, she couldn't run with him..so he had the toy in his mouth, would run around her 2 or 3 times, stop and let her take the toy from him, then he would run around again, lol. This morning he was DESPERATE to get her to chase him,he was play bowing and everything to her,but she still couldn't run to well.By tonight, she is trying to run and keep up with him..she gets half way through the yard and has to stop and sit down....if he runs to close to her tho she will try to bite his head, lol!!

Subject: Niki

Well..I wanted to wait until everything was said and done before I made this post about Niki....she has been "popping" in her hips for a couple months now and for my piece if mind, got her x-rayed...the Dr had said he thought it would be something muscular that she would outgrow but we would know for sure after the x-rays were done.

Her x-rays came back showing severe hip dysplacia, and the end of her leg bones that seat into the hip joints are not formed corectly..they have flat spots on them both. They are only about 1/3 of the way seated into the joint itself. She will never be able to compete at a high level of Schutzhund because her joints will not stand the stress of the jumping and climbing that they have to do.She will never be able to breed..she is in, as I type this recovering from being spayed.

So,I just wanted to share this with everyone,so you knew why I haven't posted about them in a while.I love her no less and she is still my lil jellybelly and her big Brother Damien's tormentor,lol..I am however very sad that she will not be able to work out on the feild.I suppose Schutzhund was not the reason the God brought her into my life, and now I have to figure out why she was..besides for me to spoil, lol!!

Subject: March of Dimes
Does the March of Dimes really fund horrific animal experiments? Sadly, yes, though the charity is tight-lipped about it! The March of Dimes has funneled millions of dollars into animal experiments. March of Dimes-funded experimenters have: sewn shut newborn kittens’ eyes, left them blind for a year, and then killed them; cut organs from pigs and stitched them into primates; and addicted pregnant animals to alcohol, nicotine and cocaine. In one study (results published in 1998), experimenters cut into the abdomens of pregnant sheep and destroyed the ear drums of the unborn lambs. Just before birth, the mother sheep and lambs were killed, and the brains were cut from the lambs to be examined

I think to some point humans probably DO intervene on stuff like that to much..I don't think we do it with any other intentions but to help tho.BUT..if you think about it...you never see a disfigured animal out in the wild, you don't see ANY "handicapped" animal out in the wild because in nature...that kind of creature COULD NOT exsist. So,I suppose it is better if the mother "takes care" of that part of the life cycle. For whatever reason, that Mama Bunny knew that the offspring would be better the way she handled it.Some things maybe we just aren't meant to understand.Nature takes care of it own...it has a wonderful balance of life and death.
