rod03801: Do you actually mean the messenger as in the one you can send messages to other people with ?

If so click start then control panel ,then open the icon for add and remove programs when that opens on the left hand side look for add or remove windows components ,when that opens scroll down untill you see windows messenger and take the tick out , then it wont start up .

rod03801: You have probably tried this but just in case, go to start then run then type in MSCONFIG click ok this opens a box, look for startup in the menue at the top click on that then look for msmsgs, if that box is checked uncheck it, that is how I stopped mine starting up each time. It says msn but mine is windows too. If it don,t work the first time do it a few times and let the pc reboot.

It doesn't sound like I virus.   It sounds like you've had a program installed onto your computer.  How long have you had the computer and do you have a restore point on your computer?  If you do, you could restore it to an earlier date and see if that helps.

Jason: I ran a virus scan a few days ago, and it found nothing. I wonder if there is any way to completely remove the Windows Messenger? (Since I intend on shutting off everytime it comes back on.) I wonder why it doesn't stay off.. What sort of legitimate things would it be used for? (Wondering if I am going to regret turning it off? But I can't deal with those things popping up a few times a minute)

rod03801: certain sites that you go on (ones for serial codes ect) will intall a bit of software on your machine they do not normally damage your machine but they do your head in when they keep poping up in the little balloons every 10 seconds or so , i tried all sorts to get rid , in the end i bought some antivirus protection and that sorted it out easily .

I have noticed that every time I power off, and boot back up, that that messenger service is turned back on, and those pop up messages start coming fast & furious again. So I seem to have to shut it back off each time I come online. Hopefully after this upgrade is installed this will stop??

rod03801: The messenger service should be disabled by default if you have all the latest updates to Windows XP. If you don't have the updates, you should get them because they will make your computer less insecure. Run the "Windows Update" program, which should be near the top of the "All Programs" menu on the start menu. It may take a long time to download all the updates, and you may have to run it multiple times.

Also, turn on your firewall.

Ok.. I need help from one of you computer pros!!

I finally ditched webtv and bought a laptop. So, you will probably have to explain like you are talking to a child! lol

I come online through Juno. It has a pop up blocker, and seems to work well, as I don't get many pop ups at all. (Though, most of my online time is really spent here at BK anyways) However, I keep getting these pop ups that dont look like typical ads. They look like messages you get from your computer. (Typical dialog boxes telling you stuff that is going on, like when downloading.. with an OK button, and the typical windows type stuff, the X , minimize and maximize buttons

They are telling me such as "55 critical errors have been found, go to this website, blah blah blah.. " and telling me to go places like 32sys.com, regproscan.net, helpfixpc.com(NOT Microsoft sites like I would think it would). The first time I started getting these, I did visit the site. It wanted me to basically download something that would find things, and I could pay for it to fix them. I also got a pop up saying something about the "certificate" and the site could not be confirmed. So, I did nothing.

A friend said it sounded like spyware, so I downloaded a spy bot ran it and it found a bunch of stuff, and I got rid of it. The pop ups persisted.

Later, I got looking around, and found an Event Log (Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Log)... Lo and behold, EVERY one of these pop ups were logged in there, and called "application pop ups". If I clicked on each individual event, it showed me an exact copy of the messages in the various pop ups.

I then downloaded a virus scan through Microsoft, and it found nothing.

Please, someone must have some advice! These popups are making me crazy. They are coming 3 or 4 per minute sometimes!

Binabik: No, you don't have to, Firefox does this all on itself. And perhaps I didn't express myself clear enough: For both Firefox versions 1.5 and 2.0 there is an update available which should fix your problem. For Firefox 2.0 it's 2.0.0.2. So check your version number ("Help"->"about Firefox"). If it starts with 2.0 but is not 2.0.0.2, an update might solve the disappearing bookmarks. Something caused that in particular situations the profiles were created with a write protection, so that firefox couldn't store the bookmarks permanently. This should be gone with 2.0.0.2/1.5.0.10. If it still doesn't store them, you could manually check if the profile folder is write protected..

Do you mean that I don't have to "go in there" and establish my own profile?

FF already updated itself to 2.0 - sorry, still don't trust it, it's lost my bookmarks too many times.

I also have Opera installed, but that seems to hiccup more on this site, though it never lost my bookmarks

And do you also use McAfee? I don't like Norton either....

Finally got my comp back on-line now. Had to un-install everything from Nortons just to get MSN to work. I'm wondering why Norton firewalled MSN even after I rebooted the whole comp? I'm using McAfee Security at the moment & the comp is actually going alot faster than before. I tried using firefox 1 time & it was running extremely slow then. IE seems to me to work better

nightmagic: What do you mean by "Firefox is not complete yet"? If you mean that is changing from time to time: yes, it is a product that is constantly improved. But it is "complete" in the meaning that it is totally ready for productional use. All changes are small improvements or new features, but I don't know anything you can do with IE but not with FF.
Firefox is actually a very mature browser so to speak.

I never had a problem with disappearing bookmarks, but I heard about it just this week. There is an update for both, firefox 1.5 and firefox 2.0 which should fix it.

Firefox keeps a profile for every user on your system. (It's in "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Mozilla Firefox\Profiles").
