(V): This week my TV (only 3.5 years old) lost the ability to power on.  I didn't opt for any extended warranty; the original warranty expired a couple of years ago.  But the manufacturer--through a subcontractor, I think--is going to make the repair in my home, and free of charge.  A not-so-small miracle!

Artful Dodger: Could your gamma or brightness settings be a bit too low?  Still, it does seem strange that there would appear to be a problem only on the far side of the board!

TigerCat: I'm not sure which "new version" you're asking about.  IE9?  I've been happily using IE8 on a couple of machines here for more than 1 1/2 years, and can't think of any safety concerns specific to that version.

There's other capable stuff that's free of charge.  Some, I think, have been discussed in this thread.

rabbitoid:  avast! has intercepted and warned against a number (I'll say about a dozen over the years) of trojans and other threats against my system.  In some cases that's involved particular files being quarantined, or strong recommendations to immediately disconnect from particular web sites.  I'm afraid I can't PROVE to you that these threats really existed, but I take these warnings at face value.

If necessary, I could probably dig up a log for you.  I'm pretty sure the software keeps some kind of record of such incidents.

Eriisa: They came out with a Release Candidate of Windows 7 earlier this month.  For that you need not be a member of TechNet or the MS Developers Network.

But as with the Beta, we're pretty much "on our own"--without official tech support from either Microsoft or (probably) your PC's manufacturer.  The RC is also designed to begin automatically shutting down your PC every couple of hours some time early next year (I think), unless and until you install a genuine version of the OS.

Since we don't know how much that will cost, I'm trying not to burn my bridges at this point.  I'm also not thrilled by the lack of Windows 7 drivers right now.  Sure, I like Windows 7 RC so far, but I'm prepared to roll back, if I encounter too many problems or don't like the eventual cost.  Right now have set up as dual boot with Windows 7 and Vista, but I'm keeping the option of uninstalling 7 RC, and reclaiming that HD partition.

At BrainKing, I'm finding it quicker than IE7 (no surprise), but slower than Firefox.

Other notes: 404 error from Chrome's primary "Help" page...not good.

Imported IE7 bookmarks were resorted alphabetically by Chrome--not good; and I haven't found out how to arrange them as I'd like.

Mousetrap: Yes...right-clicking on the "taskbar" should bring up a mini-menu having "Task Manager" as an item.
I think "Task Manager" should always appear there on that list, but it can be greyed out if Task Manager has been disabled by the Administrator...or by a virus.

Emne: IE7 Text Size setting

If the Menu Bar is already showing (with items such as "File", "Edit", "View", etc.), it's pretty easy:  View --> Text Size --> (and take your pick from the 5 choices)

If the Menu Bar items aren't already displayed, I think a right click up "near" the top of a browser page should bring up a little menu--just check "Menu Bar" there.

Andersp: Have you tried switching the connections from the hub?  Just to make sure that's not the problem.  I've had a couple of Linksys devices that have lost some (but not all) of their ports due to nearby lightning strikes and associated power surges--despite their being connected behind a decent battery backup system that offers pretty good clamping.  Kaboom!  And 4 port devices became 2 port devices.

Emne: Quicker IE7 Page Loading

I hope this might help someone...

One thing that's helped my BrainKing page loading:  preventing 400 or so smiley files from having to be re-downloaded from nearly every page I visit here.

In IE7:  Tools --> Internet Options --> General --> Browsing History --> Settings --> Check for newer versions of stored pages

If "Every time I visit the webpage" is currently checked on your system, you might want to consider changing that to: "Every time I start Internet Explorer".

I suppose it's possible that something similar could help users of other browsers.

I suppose it's also possible that I'm just an idiot...and no one else would ever set up their browser the way I did!

Emne: Checkers is Solved

That's the title of an article in the current issue of Science, by Jonathan Schaeffer, Neil Burch, Yngvi Björnsson, et al, from the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta.

Article abstract:
The game of checkers has roughly 500 billion billion possible positions (5 x 1020). The task of solving the game, determining the final result in a game with no mistakes made by either player, is daunting. Since 1989, almost continuously, dozens of computers have been working on solving checkers, applying state-of-the-art artificial intelligence techniques to the proving process. This paper announces that checkers is now solved: perfect play by both sides leads to a draw. This is the most challenging popular game to be solved to date, roughly one million times more complex than Connect Four. Artificial intelligence technology has been used to generate strong heuristic-based game-playing programs, such as DEEP BLUE for chess. Solving a game takes this to the next level, by replacing the heuristics with perfection.

Emne: Resize an icon image for BrainKing
Here's what I've been using for Icon files:
http://resizepic.com/

To avoid unacceptable image distortion, I'd suggest either beginning with an image that's close to a multiple of 40x50, or else cropping it to approximately those relative dimensions, before you use that online tool to create a 40x50 image.

I hope you like it! I've had good results.
