I'm sure Harley would appreciate it if we took the WebTV/cookie topic over to our discussion board at the Club WebTV fellowship..

It could use some posts, anyways!
:-)

And if you're a rook or knight using webtv and not yet a member, please message me!

This is a frequent problem with WebTV. Powering off and powering back on ALWAYS fixes it. (Until the next time anyways.)

There are plenty of sites where you can play in complete secrecy if you so desire.. It is something unique to this site, part of its personality.. It would be a shame to make it just like the rest..

Come on BBW, that's silly about publicly posting CC #'s... it is NOT the same thing at all..

If it WERE an option to turn it off (which I also hope ISNT an option), then I would hope that person would also NOT be able to see what others are doing while they have it turned off.

22. February 2004, 19:05:57
rod03801
I hope it's NOT an option in the new version.
It is one of the things that makes this site feel like a real community. Sort of all being in the same virtual room.
I don't understand the need for secrecy here.

It is one of the things that attracted me to this place..

Not trying to argue with anyone, just stating my "vote"

if pawns only could play in unrated games, I personally would avoid playing all pawns!!! I prefer rated games. A change of this sort would limit potential opponents greatly for me...

Brian, AndersP's post was a joke. Because Steve is frequently on top of the daily # of moves list.

I will happily put at least $20, possibly a little more, towards a new server... without affecting my membership.. I'm about to renew in the next week anyways, too..

I agree. People are talking about eliminating many of the features (some unique) that brought me here to Brainking! I don't want to see any of it gone!

I look forward to the BKR's being back on the main page..
And I want to place my vote for KEEPING on-line opponents. I use it CONSTANTLY.. Most of the time, those are the games I play first. (the ones against opponents that are online at the same time as me.) It helps me to always have games to play.
And I too like being nosey and seeing what others are doing. :-)

If a doubling cube is ever added, the resign needs to be for the whole match, though.
Is the doubling cube coming with the new brainking, Fencer? or the often debated correction to follow the generally accepted rules of Backgammon? (being forced to always play both dice if it is possible)

You must remember too, that the MIDDLE bkr, isn't necesarilly the AVERAGE bkr.., but probably pretty close..

Oh, I see Kevin figured out the average for chess.... and in this case, I guess it's pretty close..

I would also add, that the average is most likely different for most games. Depending on the number of skilled players as opposed to novices that are here on this site.

Subject: Mysterious Time outs?
Did anyone else suddenly experience some game time outs??? At exactly 6:20pm Eastern U.S. timezone, I timed out against 8 people, and 2 people also timed out against me (at this exact time too)

I KNOW this is a mistake, because the first thing I do when I come to brainking, is sort my game list in order of when it times-out, and I first move on any games with less than 2 days left, before moving on any others..
I know that last night before I went to bed I had tons of time on all my games!
I've already written to Fencer, I just was curious if anyone else experienced this..
I just hope my BKR's can be fixed.. it killed my halma ones!

I think unrated WITHOUT any completed games, is 1300. But if you are unrated, but have completed 3 games and won them all, your rating is even higher, though not shown. I only say this because when I signed up for a Tank Battle tournament, I was unrated, but I was at the top of my section, as though I had a high BKR. ( I got lucky, and am actually not that good at Tank Battle !!! :-D )

LOL.. we all pretty much posted at the same time and said the same thing... :-)

16. December 2003, 20:55:53
rod03801
Logically, it seems it should effect it, unless both players are pretty equally rated... Obviously it shouldn't have as much effect as a win or loss. Clearly if a 1200 rated player achieves a draw with a 2400 rated player, their 1200 bkr should go up at least a little.
As other people have pointed out in the past, in many cases it is probably such a small change that it doesnt change the # we see. (as it doesn't go out any decimal points.)

16. December 2003, 20:45:57
rod03801
It should affect it! However, I have seen people say that it NEVER affects theirs, and others say it does. I wonder what the "true" answer is...

I've only had 4 draws, so I don't really know if it affected anything..

IMupChucKing, whenever you get that "item cannot be used" pop up here, powering off then back on always fixes it...

Subject: Dumb Question about draws.
Hey.. I guess I haven't dealt with a lot of games where draws are very common.
If, in a game such as Tablut, both players keep making the same move, moving back when the opponent makes the appropriate defensive move, then the opponent moves back, and it starts all over again? Is this considered a draw? If so, after how many repeats is it appropriate to ask for one?

LOL.. did that make any sense? I think it's snowing in my head too...

If you mean on the main active game list, I can still do that.. I switch back and forth all the time... I like it better in alphabetical order of game name, but switch to being ordered by "time left", frequently to make sure I move on games low on time.

Dragon.. as BBW said.. many people may not remember if they had lost or won a game from back then. Doesn't make them bad sports.. it just means they don't have bionic memories.. I personally resigned all games I knew for sure I had lost before the time warp. If my opponent couldn't remember either, we played them out.

Subject: Felix
Hey Felix, I hope Mr. Trice does indeed get your money to you. But it needs to be made clear that this has nothing to do with Brainking.com. I only point this out, because when you brought it up, it was in reference to a player here wanting a refund because of the site problems. And you told him/her to not hold their breath. Just because you have run into problems with the creator of that tournament, in NO way indicates how Fencer would handle this other person's problem.
I FULLY sympathize with you, I just don't think it's fair to criticize the website for a personal matter between you and Mr. Trice.
Good luck getting your money. I would be frustrated too.

Pardon my ignorance, but what's wrong with red and black circles??????? That's the way most of the other pieces on the site are... Put a little crown on the piece when it becomes a king.
Personally, I'm not much of a checkers player, and have gotten used to the pawns used here, so it doesn't really matter to me... Just wondering why some fancy piece made by someone else HAS to be used????

Subject: Re: Rules of Backgammon
I agree completely, Pyloric Valve. As I'm sure MOST backgammon lovers do too.

I DO see Danoschek's point, that technically HERE, it is not cheating.
But it is NOT the universally accepted version of backgammon. PERIOD.
I'm sure that since a majority of backgammon players here would prefer the universally accepted rules to be implement here, I'm sure Fencer will at some point do this. He is a busy man!
I have often wondered if he would consider putting the game back a move if both parties agreed that would be the fair thing to do. (Maybe they weren't aware of the rule, and if you mention it to them, they agree to it).. Just a thought.

It has been better for me too. And I have noticed that the times that I actually can't access the site have been for significantly shorter amounts o time. If I try back in a couple minutes, it is usally fine again for me.
On webtv, we don't see the "site is temporarily down" page. Most of the time I get a webtv pop up saying "Brainking.com is to busy to use right now"
But again, I too have noticed a definite improvement. Way to go, Fencer.

This happens occaisionally with Webtv... The quickest way I have found to fix it, is to leave the site, hang up, re- connect and come back. It seems to me that USUALLY helps. It has always worked fine when coming back to that game later. Sometimes I don't think you even have to reconnect completely. Sometimes leaving the site and coming back helps. But not always.(unless a significant amount of time has passed)

You are correct. That is very reasonable. I'm sure Fencer will address this when he gets a chance.

19. July 2003, 20:20:54

I don't think it's important to list how much an individual donates. It's more important that as many as possible donate SOMETHING. I only meant a page listing how much is needed, and how much has been collected.
If ALL of us who LOVE this site, band together to HELP Fencer make this site the way we all want it to be, we can certainly be successful. I'm making my donation today. :-) ... And perhaps if I see a page and see that lots of people are donating, I will donate more.
