Foxy Lady: Aside from telling me a thing about using this product in a way I hadn't thought of, I do not see what it has to do with computers. It's mostly written in a very biased and anti-drug misinformation style regardless how often this might have happened (Yeah, lawn darts are a threat too) but really, where's the facts? Our society just doesn't know anything if one stops to think about it. Can we not think critically any more? Marijuana has never, and I mean never ever, killed anyone. And believe you me, we know the government has been searching for the dangers to marijuana for a long time. Skydiving kills people every year. Which one is legal? Does this make sense? And don't tell me jumping out of an airplane doesn't get the jumpers high! It is an expensive hobby and takes the diver away from his family. If he dies while skydiving, a lot of insurance companies won't pay, or make him pay more for coverage, again hurting his family. I see so much hypocracy in our society in its handling of things, I cannot but wonder where it's leading us. I can legally buy a crossbow or a Berreta 9mm gun, but nowhere are new Lawn Darts to be found?! Whiskey is legal and marijuana isn't? Now you've told me about some aerosol product that can be used like this. If anything, you're making the problem worse because some people will now try it out that hadn't even considered such a use. Police officers, and especially the ones that go to various schools and proselytize about the dangers of society posed to our children, are about the least credible people I know of when I'm seeking answers to a question. They have a mission and they will tell you want they want without giving you all the facts to make an informed decision. It is because of them and the lies told to me about drugs that I had to independently reseach this for myself. They lied. One thing they were right about is that drug laws are trouble. What they don't tell you is that it's not the drugs that are the trouble! Breaking the law is the trouble. That, and the main thing that is always left unaddressed. Why take drugs in the first place? Why not teach people how to take drugs safely? This whole thing about not taking drugs is the biggest hypocracy of all. If a drug company sells it, it's OK? That's what I gather from watching television anyway. You're sad? Take this. You're anxious? Take this. You have erection problems? Take this. Can't lose weight? Take this. Trouble sleeping? Take this. Depressed? Take this. When one is really sick, that's when you need drugs to cure what ails you. If I want to take drugs just to see what they'll do to me or if I want to repeat a previous experience, what's the deal and why is it any of your business? Why is this activity against the law? What is the logic to throwing someone in jail for drug use that's not for medicinal reasons? If you don't like drugs, the solution is easy. Don't take them. Keep your non-drug use to yourself and leave me alone. Reality is for people that can't handle drugs. Believe me, I've seen enough friends and acquantices lives ruined from irresponsible drugs use. They made a choice and were stupid in the exercise of their choice. I've also seen people that have no problem using drugs, or even benefit from their use. People can and will get their drugs. The most controlled place in society is prison, right? And yet, a prisoner can get drugs. Do we want to lock our whole society down just because some people don't like others getting high? We have plenty of laws dealing with people misbehaving, we do not need drug laws. It amazes me that our country didn't learn this lesson from the Prohibition era. It should be apparent that what we're doing now isn't working and it's making criminals out of a lot of otherwise law abiding citizens. Why penalize people that can use drugs responsibly?Criminalizing a product that has a very large demand creates crime where a crime didn't previously exist. It also causes corruption amoung law enforcement. I want the police to enforce laws that are made to protect me from real criminals, like burgulars, carjackers, extortionists, shysters, and shady politicaians. What harm is caused to me from someone smoking a joint or shooting heroin? Why throw them in jail? Drug laws also lessen the respect for other laws. And don't forget about our freedoms lost when the cops use the facade of drugs to stop or search you and say it is because you fell into the profile of a drug dealer or some other "reason". If people could buy the drugs they wanted down at Sav-on or their local pharmarcy as they do with buying their other prescriptions, or even down at a 7-11 if we really made it easy to get them, it would immediately eliminate drug cartels, drug gangsters, and cops on the take. It would not eliminate drug abuse or problems caused by irresponsible drug use, but at least we'd not have our prisons full of people who on the main are hurting no one or only hurting themselves. It would save lives since the quality of the drugs and the dose would now be known quantities for the users. We could certainly modify the tort laws so that people that use a drug for recreational uses would not be allowed to sue the sellor or manufacturer and said user could also be made fully responsible for all of his actions and not be able to use the fact he was high at the time to get off the hook.

Coincidentally, I have a cat named Thor.

Walter Montego:

Thanks Miuek for that great tutorial!!

I am certainly not an expert when it comes to using Proxomitron, but here's a few things I learned that should help a Proxomitron newbie.

1. Adding Others' Filters
2. Adding Regular Sites to the Bypass List
3. Enabling/disabling Certain Filters
4. Save your settings!!
4. Helful link

1. Adding Others' Filters

I wasn't able to write my own Proxomitron filters, and found that using others' filters was much easier. Here's an easy one to start off with: JD5000's filters. I use Grypen's filters, which are pretty much JD5000's filters that Grypen modified (source).

2. Adding Regular Sites to the Bypass List

When first using Proxomitron (especially after installing someone else's filters), I found that some of my regular sites didn't work properly, or at all. Setting Proxomitron to Bypass didn't seem to help, so I added my regular sites to the Bypass list:

- Right-click on Proxomitron's icon in the taskbar, and choose Edit Blockfile, then from the sidemenu choose Bypass List.txt

- Notepad opens the Bypass list, then scroll to the bottom and add:
[^/]++brainking.com/

Each site gets added to a new line. To add other sites, I just change the 'brainking.com' area. Here's a sample of some of my blocklist sites:

[^/]++ebay.com/
[^/]++bloglines.com/

[^/]++brainking.com/
[^/]++itsyourturn.(net|c
om)/
[^/]++furl.net/
[^/]++linkfilter.net/

I can't explain most of the regex code, but I do know the pipe* means OR. I left in It's Your Turn in case one of your favorite sites has a .net and a .com (or .org, .edu, .uk ending) and need to include both endings. Sorry it's a competitor site, but it was the only one I had in my bypass that had more than one ending. I rarely play there anymore 8^)

* The pipe is the up/down character in between 'net' and 'com' on the itsyourturn line. You can find it on your (American) keyboard on the upper portion of the backslash key, and will need to use your shift (caps) key to use it.

Once you've added your site to the bypass list, save it from Notepad's menu, then reload the page to see if it's working properly. It took me a few days of adding sites before I could surf easily with Proxomitron.

3. Enabling/disabling Certain Filters

- Double-click on the Proxomitron icon in your taskbar

- Click the Web Pages button under the Edit Filters section (right side)

- When the new dialog box appears, hover your mouse over the right-edge until your cursor changes to double-arrows, then drag the edge of the box towards the right (so you will be able to see longer items without scrolling sideways)

- Look through the filters, the group-titles have arrows/brackets (>>), equal signs (==), or hypens (--). The enhanced 404 and Google groups are towards the bottom; I love them. Place a checkmark next to a filter to enable it, or uncheck a filter to disable it.

4. Save your settings!!

If you made changes to which filters are enabled/disabled, you'll need to click the Apply button (if it's not greyed out, if it is, choose OK button), then ***Exit Proxomitron completely*** by right-clicking on the Proxomitron icon in the taskbar, choosing Exit program. A new dialog box appears and asks: Do you want to save those changes to the current configuration file? Click on the Save Changes button on the left to save your new settings to the configuratin file.

Repopen Proxomitron before trying to browse again.

4. Helful link

CastleCops JD5000 Forum is the best forum I've found; it has lots of helpful members, including the filter writers themselves occasionally answering questions. It also seems the most current from what I've been able to find from the search engines.

playBunny: I've learned a little about HTML code from trying to print out on a single page the NASCAR line ups and race results without all the banners and extraneous stuff that comes with the page. For a couple of years I have asked people how I could just print it out without that stuff and I never got an answer that helped. Plus if I could do it on one page instead of two, it'd save paper and time for me having to cut and tape it together. So I finally just downloaded the whole page and then viewed the page with WordPad®, started deleted things, and observing the change. This worked using trail and error, but I have little idea about how to add things to the HTML code or change them. At least I've seen what the code looks like and have an idea about what things do. I haven't a clue about the table functions of HTML code, but I've found out about the type font and size and what is to be printed out. I'd need to learn about the various structure things of it to do that. I'm sure who ever inputs the data at NASCAR just types it into a form and voila! instant page.

I'll downlaon the Proxomtiron after I make a few mores move. Should I get it with the install or not. I was planning on get it without the install as it says it's all in one file and there's no reason to have it installed. Should I do as I planned or get the installed version? I was going to get the June version instead of the May version.

miuek: Proxomitron! Now that's amazing. I've read the help files and contents. This program has lots of uses. Just from reading it I wouldn'tve guessed you could do what you said about changing the way my board looks while using this site. How'd you make the connection to do so? Is what you say easy to do with the Proxomitron? I'd like to use a different icon for the Janus in Janus Chess than what is used on this site. Is this something I could change with the Proxomitron? How would I do it, if it is something I can change?

sounds more like an overheating/hardware problem to me than a software issue. what temps are your CPU, GC, and HDD'(s) running at normal and when you launch thr apps? I had a problem like the one you are having. Everytime I played a graphics intense game, I would freeze up after a few mins. I found out that my GC was running VERY hot (around 130-140) and that was my problem. I moved into a different case put 6 fans in and now I have no problems what so ever!

thanx for your replys. i got my pc up & running again. i got out the motherboard manual & reset cmos.

now back to my original prob. the pc only crashes when i play games. there's no warning, it just resets & reboots back to desktop with no error message or anything. i had directx 9b & with the game i bought this weekend, i now have 9c installed. i've run a full virus check with AVG free & nothing comes up. I'm currently running macafee online scan to see if that finds anything.

PC specs are:

Abit KV7 motherboard
athlon 3000XP processor
2 x 512mb ddr 400mhz ram
geforce4 5950 256mb graphics card

i've put the latest drivers in from nvidia(june'05) to see if that made any difference.

this problem has only started in the last few weeks.

*edit* macafee hasn't found anything either!

Subject: Re: dead pc
RAHVIN666: You have overclocked your processor for sure.
It´s fine to have latest version of bios but I Think it is not always necessary. What typie of motherborard do you have?

Now, you have one more possibility to return bios of your motherboard on default status.
You have to clear CMOS on motherboard and than you will be able to boot to windows or bios, whatever you want.
Also, the common rule or tenet is to not play with BIOS when you are realy not for sure what happens and what you has changed. :)

And sometemis, it´s better to format disk (or partition where your systems is installed) and make a new instalation. But before that, back up all things you wish and are important for you (documents, photos, mp3) and that reinstall everything with new drivers if available.

And if the problems with booting of your system will persist, that ask some of your friends, if he can scan your harddisk and then make backup of thing you wish.

Let us now how you have solved a problem.

7. August 2005, 02:55:06
PhatPlaya 臭臭小指
It seems to me that the problem could be one of hardware. If the CPU was running at 3 GHz and now it shows as 1GHz, then the CPU was overclocked. In cases like this problems can arise if gthe CPU is overheating. It is summertime, so at this time of the year computers can overheat. It is possible taht the graphics card might be overheating too. I have a computer program that runs from DOS. It can test all your hardware for potential problems. If you send me your e-mail in a private message, I will send the program to you. Then you can scan your PC.

After eliminating the hardware problem, then the next step is to make sure that the BIOS of your computer is the latest version. For that you will need to know who the manufacturer of the motherboard is so you can go to their website and download the latest BIOS version. Then you can flash the BIOS into the BIOS ROM. If you have the manual for the PC, it will tell you what motherboard you have. If you don't have the manual you can also open the computer and look at the manufacturer and the model number of your motherboard. If you don't want to open the computer have another small program that will read the BIOS and tell you the motherboard manufacturer and model. After that you can update the BIOS with the utilities that the manufacturer provides.

Well, let me know if you want the programs, I am sure they can help at least to diagnose any potential problems. One more question, is the computer crashing only when playing games, or when doing other tasks? If it is doing it only when playing games you can also install the latest version of Direct X from the Microsoft website. Direct X tends to interact directly with the graphics card GPU, and if Direct X is causing a problem because of a bug then the latest version can help too.

i've been having problems with pc for the last few days. it's keeps crashing when i'm playing games.

i've tried doing disk cleanup, installed new drivers for graphics card & even turned off anti virus & firewall. nothing seems to work. after a few mins of play on the last 3 games i've tried, the pc just resets. it loads as normal back to desktop with no error message or anything.

in my efforts to try and fix this, i went into bios & tried changing a few thing around to see if that did anything. but my last attempt seems to have killed my pc. i changed the setting in bios to "safe" (i think thats what it was called, the option next to optimal settings), and now my pc won't even boot. all thats on screen is the bios version at the top, then the processor (which shows around 1000mhz instead of 3000+) and it does memory test, but then it freezes. i can't even access bios to change the setting back.

have i totally messed it up, or is there a way to sort it out?

please help.
