When a queen takes, removing the checkers could allow for a loop which would be impossible otherwise, because there would be two consecutive checkers along the line. For instance : queen on a1 against checkers on d2-c3-d6-b6 (please pardon me for the chess notation). By removing the checker on c3 after taking it, the queen could take all pawns : a1-e5-c7-a5-e1.
