Yes - if you have completed all of your games and have no mathematical chance of moving on to the next round you can message Fencer and he'll remove you from it so you can join another.

I didn't say they wouldn't be willing to send a bigger one - i'm just saying that everyone who did will have to send another one... :-)

Now there's a good idea bumble!! :-)

Re: bigger pictures.

In order to display larger pictures anywhere, a picture of that size would need to exist - ie, everyone who has sent a picture would have to send a new, bigger one. The smaller one then would need not exist, because width and height tags can be added to the image code to shrink it. However, this would only work if the same width to height ratio was used for the larger picture. For example, 80x100 or 160x200 or 240x300 or any other sizes where W:H = 4:5.

I don't remember if I requested this or just imagined I did, so I'll request it again.

How about the game Lines of Action? Some rules etc can be found here.

I checked the team tournament, and beside the "Tournament:" it lists the tournament name as well as the two teams participating in that game. I couldn't say if it was always like that or not.

No, all games work the same.

In an N-win match, only wins and losses are counted - the first to win N games wins the match.

In an N-point match, wins are counted as 1.0 while draws are counted as 0.5 for each player, so two draws is considered the same as a win.

Therefore, it is possible for an N-point match to be a draw overall, while an N-win match can never be a draw.

On Goldtoken it automatically selects the username field when the page comes up - i had a quick look at the source and it was a line of javascript:

<script language="JavaScript">
<!--
document.loginform.nickname.focus();
//-->
</script>

where "loginform" is the name of the form and "nickname" is the name of the textbox. With the HTML comments around it, it won't hurt people who don't have java enabled browsers, and will work for people who do.

Andersp...so you're saying he's not allowed to actually program for the site? All he can do is listen and reply to every user's comments / questions, and say "Yes, I can do that" or "No, i'm not going to do that" and never actually do anything because he doesn't actually have any time left to do any of these things he's commented about?

rofl Whisperz! :-)

I think he means that the only difference between the "Who is on-line" and "On-line opponents" pages is the link at the top to take you to the other one :-)

29. February 2004, 21:42:47
Kevin
I wouldn't recommend that. Picture this...

One user (say a new player, although it doesn't matter) decides to turn this automatic passing off. They play a game with a user like Long John who feels the most important thing on this site is for games to go as fast as possible. It so happens that LJ is to make several moves in a row as his opponent cannot move. However, because this user has the option turned off, each move must still be passed. And it turns into a similar situation as to what happened with the whole resignation things - whoever doesn't turn this "option" on will be pressured by such users into turning it on and it would turn into a huge argument about "It's an option for a reason" and "If you can't make a move, why not let me move again?".

29. February 2004, 17:47:02
Kevin
He said his reasons were pointed out. He didn't say it was because it was too difficult to program. It would help if you would read his post?

The other reason (besides the inability to chat between moves) was that the board can change substantially in one move (for example, in reversi (or even backgammon)) that it could be even more confusing to new players who maybe just learned the rules. It could (and likely would) also cause many many many complains / comments regarding "My opponent is cheating." or "This game doesn't look right." or "Why did my opponent get to move more than once?" or something like that.

16. February 2004, 02:35:17
Kevin
A poll like that would either make users pick a single most important choice when there may be several that a user feels are equally important, or allows users to select multiple options and therefore does not really provide an accurate representation of what the population feels to be the most important.

How would you suggest selecting the field 1 and field 2 without refreshing the page without using something like Java?

Or what if you accidentally click on a 2nd square and then change your mind, or never meant to click on that square in the first place?

3. February 2004, 04:35:50
Kevin
Yes, lines of action is fun :-)

(the only discrepincy in the rules on this site compared to the tournament rules is that according to the tourament rules, if both players "win" on the same turn it is a draw).

A wiki is a web page that any user can edit at any time (provided no one is currently editing it when you try to edit it, in which case you'd have to wait until they were done editing it).

Hopefully! He did say it (and a few other things - i don't remember what exactly) should be done for the new year - he's got 9 days... :-)

I asked Fencer a while ago about the system automatically determining the winner of a section before all the games are complete (like it does on GoldToken, if any of you are familiar with that - it marks people as "eliminated" when they can no longer win, and marks player(s) as "winner" possibly even before all the games are complete, allowing future rounds to start with games from the previous round still in progress). Fencer said it was planned, but something like that would have to be tested heavily to ensure it works perfectly before he'd add it to the site, and that's the last i heard from him about it :-)

I'm rated pretty low at chess ;-) lol

Be Patient. It is coming. And besides, your games (and everyone else's) seem to be progressing fine without it, so it doesn't seem overly urgent.

Spirou: jason just copied directly Fencer's post which you refer to. There is just the two of them :-)

So if you capture the queen and a knight, it would probably be almost impossible to checkmate - that would allow it to move like a maharajah - and it's hard enough to checkmate a maharajah by itself, let alone with the rest of the chess set-up there! :-)

7. September 2003, 09:34:57
Kevin
Yes, that wouldn't add up nearly as fast :-)

100KB * 7000 players = 700GB = a LOT of memory space. And remember - we get more players all the time. I realize most players will not place their picture there, but it has the possibility of taking up a lot of space.

If you want your opponent's to be able to see your picture, make a site at geocities or something like that, and put your picture on it.

tactician: Assuming i remember correctly, Pro reversi will start with the first four pieces in place, and reversi race counts the number of flipped pieces, rather than how many pieces you currently have. Someone said, however, that it will be the same winner anyways :-)

7. September 2003, 05:42:51
Kevin
Once the king has moved as that piece to get out of check, can that same piece be used to get out of check again, or would they have to have another knight (or whatever piece it was)?

Also, i'm assuming the king could only move like this when in check?

2. September 2003, 08:04:41
Kevin
Just to clarify Jason's post: The game boards, not the discussion boards. (When i first read it, i thought he meant the discussion boards) :-)

Subject: Re: Tournaments?
ANIMAL: But would you have to actually go into that tournament for it to be marked as "visited" or would you just have to view the tournament list with that tournament on it?

26. August 2003, 21:20:46
Kevin
Yes, i have asked if the tournament winner could be indicated when it is mathematically proven. Fencer told me that he would not implement something like that until it was tested very thoroughly, and that was the last i heard of it.

19. August 2003, 01:26:07
Kevin
Ah, i didn't read it carefully enough ;-)

Yes, that is a good idea...but where would this list be put on the game pages?

19. August 2003, 01:15:59
Kevin
Those are listed on your main page on the right, right beneath the date and time :-)

15. July 2003, 04:03:15
Kevin
Yes, i asked about this, and he said he would not add something like this until he had tested it very carefully. That was the last I heard about it :-)

28. June 2003, 00:45:48
Kevin
First, in general, if you want to be sure Fencer hears your comments, send him a message. He seems to read this board, but i'm not sure :-)

About the Automatic Passing...
Several people have mentioned it, and every time Fencer says he disagrees with it - so i suppose you'll have to convince him that it is a good idea and would not confuse anyone (like BBW's idea should work). But even then, it would go on his list, and could not happen for a while.

About the conditional moves (if my opponent moves here, i move here)...
This, although a good feature to have i agree, would likely not be used by anyone who is not a near professional and can see the game several moves in advance. And even for those people, when they use it, it would create a great strain on the server. I don't think it's practical at this time :-)

27. June 2003, 03:58:02
Kevin
The problem was most likely that you were viewing a page stored in cache - either you'd have to delete the temporary internet files (i'm not sure how to do that on WebTV) or force it to load from the source and not from your cache (again, i don't know how to do that on WebTV).

22. June 2003, 03:35:14
Kevin
Fencer: Now that you mentioned it, could you tell us how close we are to the hardware upgrade? :-)

21. June 2003, 19:31:14
Kevin
I think he means like we could block certain players' posts from the dbs, so they will not show up.

I have read a few requests that say they want the enemies list to include blocking db posts.

I'm not sure then, if it did that. It shouldn't have counted the match for your rating. It might have something to do with that it was a 2-game match. You might be best to ask Fencer about it. :-)

20. June 2003, 17:42:42
Kevin
I never heard about tournament games counting regardless, but i guess it could be.

Yes, a "rated" game will not be rated if it is deleted, timed-out, etc after less than 2 moves from each player (4 moves total). This also allows players to delete a game they didn't want to play without being penalized. (For example, if someone accepted their Open Invitation whom they didn't want to play).

20. June 2003, 05:18:13
Kevin
You only need 4 games to have a provisional rating. You are still unrated in Linetris because your lost game was timed-out with less than 4 moves total, so it was not counted towards your rating. Similar in your line4 match.

19. June 2003, 05:37:40
Kevin
I hadn't even noticed that was there before! lol.

18. June 2003, 04:44:35
Kevin
I just tried setting up a Crazy Screen Chess game (that happened to be against BIG BAD WOLF), and it wouldn't let me place anything - it wouldn't let me load my previous set-ups, and it wouldn't let me place any pieces!

18. June 2003, 04:03:11
Kevin
It's worked fine for me with black and with white, except occasionally not letting me remove a piece. It lets me set them up fine!

Are you sure you aren't trying to put a pawn on the bottom row or a bishop on the same colour as your other bishop in screen chess?

17. June 2003, 22:32:26
Kevin
harley: The computer wouldn't suggest anything. It would allow you to say "If my opponent moves this pawn to here, I will move my knight to here." or something like that.

17. June 2003, 07:16:26
Kevin
Or, it sounds like conditional moves, which i have read about a LONG time ago (ok, relatively...lol). Someone mentioned it shortly after i joined, and Fencer said it would be quite a bit of work and would greatly affect server performance ;-)

17. June 2003, 06:22:56
Kevin
I won't disagree with the default turned off, or at least option to turn it off. But I would say that the effect of this on the server would be so minimal that no one would notice the difference. (Although i'm not certain).

But for all we know, it could be a members only thing - no pawns have said they have it yet ;-)

17. June 2003, 06:00:28
Kevin
Even if it isn't useful to know what page your opponent is accessing, it does tell you when they are online, which is more useful than what page.

17. June 2003, 05:27:17
Kevin
It removed fine for me on screen chess - i place a piece, and removed it just fine. Maybe you could tell Fencer the situation in which the piece wouldn't remove and he could look into it.
