Subject: Re: (Crazy) Screen Chess Setup
Originally, you could hit the "Back" button and place multiple pawns in the same column in screen chess, for example. I asked Fencer about it, and he fixed it.

About the back button not removing the piece...When you place a piece, it is stored in the server. Hitting the back button simply shows you an older version of the page (in cache memory) without that new piece. Then, when you click on a new square to add a new piece, that other piece is still on the server, so it displays it. Doesn't it remove it when you click on it?

Yes. But does that mean you only play one game of dark chess at a time? Or would you need one for each game that you have?

9. June 2003, 20:27:35
Kevin
tonyh: What is there to set up in Dark Chess? And yes, as it is, it does stay there until you clear it.

Icon: Yes, I have made this request and Fencer has added it to his list :-)

Nope, not a bug. If there is only one section in a round, there will not be a next round, regardless of ties.

2. June 2003, 04:36:37
Kevin
That would depend on your resolution - on my 800x600 it put even the first game on the list off the screen (although i do have the top 3 BKR listed on my main page) :-)

1. June 2003, 08:56:01
Kevin
You can't remove news posts (which is what that is) yet. You just have to wait until it goes away (and i'm not really sure how long that'll be). I know, it can be kind of annoying ;-)

Dream: when i had some of my games automatically time out due to the bug from changing your days off (details found on brainking.info), i asked Fencer if my ratings would be automatically changed back. He said a record was not kept, but if i remembered them he would manually adjust them. (So if you keep a record somewhere of your ratings - like i have made a screenshot of my AllBKR page - he will restore them for you).

lol yes i know what you're talking about. I think it would just end up being the reverse order of what it currently is. I'm not entirely sure, but i don't think that would be too hard for Fencer to do.

What I really want are options like this:
-Move and go to next game according to time
-Move and go to next game from this tournament
-Move and go to next game with this opponent
-Move and go to next game of game (eg. chess, checkers, etc - the game that the current game is)

But i'm assuming none of those would be practical until the new server? :-)

I have found between about 8:30 to around midnight GMT is very slow, and sometimes won't load at all. But all other times (at least when i try to log on) it works great! :-)

how do you figure pool is going to work on a site like this, runningwolf? ;-)

29. April 2003, 02:30:21
Kevin
Dmitri: Yes, but the red number beside the "Message Box" Link informs you of any new messages, even while playing. But yes, both invites accepted or declined as one would be a good idea.

28. April 2003, 23:57:03
Kevin
This could be easily solved by having the server send a message letting you know if your opponent accepted or declined the invite. And if they just leave it, you will not get the message (or only get one message) and know that one was not accepted.

It doesn't really have to do with how many players online...it is simply based on the number of requests. A request happens every time any user accesses a new page.

22. April 2003, 02:50:04

It would most likely have to do with the fact that your opponent had a provisional rating. Those can do strange things at times :-)

21. April 2003, 05:54:04
Kevin
Yes, 7 point match. 1 point for a win, 1/2 point for a draw. It doesn't matter how you win, or by how much, in any game (yet).

15. April 2003, 03:52:03
Kevin
Yep, mine are alphabetical now too! Yay Fencer!! :-)
I've never had a problem with the (XX new) not being beside any of the boards...

13. April 2003, 02:06:16
Kevin
I asked him why they seemed to be never in any particular order, and changed constantly, he said they should be alphabetical and he'd look into it. That's the last i heard of it.

They are not in any order for me either, and seem to change frequently, although not every day or anything.

6. April 2003, 04:06:36
Kevin
There's actually 2 other differences as well.
1. In go-moku, over lines (6 or more) do not count. In Five in Line here they do count.
2. In go-moku, it is a win for player 2 when the board fills up. Here it is a draw. (Although the board filling up is very rare anyways).

Subject: Re: Some ideas...
Yes, many people have suggested this automatic passing in reversi, and every time the same reply - Fencer doesn't want to implement this. It does slow the play down, but not considerably - passes occur quite infrequently especially against evenly matched players. And to beginning players, having the board completely different could be unexpected and confusing.

Subject: Re: Pente
Nothing, really...i guess it only really could be confusing if you just kept the moves and tried to rebuild the game. You'd have to know there was no "i" column.

Kevin
Subject: Pente
I noticed there is no "i" column. Is there a reasom for this? My only guess is it could get confused with "L", but at least for me, having no "i" is more confusing than having an "i" and "L". :-)

Subject: Main Page loading time
I'm sure not many players have this problem, but for me the main page loads very slow because of the number of games i am playing. Most of the time when i log on, i go through the DBs, and then click on the red link beside "Main page" to start playing, so i have no need to see my list of games.

My request: The option to have a page when you log on with the columns on the left and right (or top and bottom with row layout), and nothing in the middle. That would save a lot of loading time :-)

Thanks!

BlazinBrian: If one of the games was deleted before the 2nd player made their 2nd move, it will not count towards your rating even if it was rated. There is always a possibility that your rating will not change from the result of a game...happens to me all the time! :-)

Dmitri King: There is a game with this piece, called Maharajah chess, where white only has a maharajah and black has the standard setup.

Kevin
Subject: Re: game ratings
What game type was this game that lowered your rating from a win?

10. March 2003, 04:01:54
Kevin
Subject: Re: game ratings
I will assume your rating is provisional (italic...less than 25 rated games completed). Provisional ratings can do strange things, which is why is it almost a bad idea of showing us our rating before it's eastablished :-)
Quite frequently with provisional ratings your rating will drop from a win or go up from a loss. As soon as it becomes established, this will not happen.

8. March 2003, 08:20:22
Kevin
I've seen it 13x13 more places than IYT! :-)
But you could be right.

7. March 2003, 21:29:15
Kevin
There actually is one more difference between the current version and regular go-moku. In go-moku, when the board fills up the 2nd player wins because of the advantage to the first player. (I guess i'm assuming it will be a draw when the board fills up here. On boards bigger than the usual 13x13, the board filling up is very rare anyways).

Subject: Re: submit and go to next game
Sure it can be done. I'm not sure how Chad at Goldtoken has given the order to the system, but here Fencer uses the timestamps on each piece of data (one thing that i remember Chad saying he should have done but didn't know to when he created it). The way it is done here (which is a much more efficient manner) it will greatly slow down the server to have to calculate the time remaining with days off, vacations, and holidays. With the number of games i have, my main page loads VERY slow compared to the game pages, which still have the list of the games :-)

3. March 2003, 22:34:48
Kevin
Subject: Re: submit and go to next game
This button goes to the next game according to when they were sent by your opponent, so it will take you to the game that has been waiting the longest. Fencer has said that going to the next game according to time will greatly slow down the site because of all the calculations that would have to be done with time left, days off, vacation, holidays, etc.

Subject: How about this?
What about a list on the left (at least it's the left in column layout!) like the existing ones (friends, fav boards, etc) for tournaments we created. It would save having to go through the tournaments page (which often loads quite slowly!!)

Thanks!
Kevin

macoan: This has been brought up a few times (including me). I asked Fencer, and he did not like the idea. He said that then, if a player has to pass several moves in a row (like in reversi, or backgammon), the board might come back to them completely different then when they last saw it. He also likes players to be able to send messages with all moves, including passes. Hope that helps :-)

dream: You can for chess, if you go to your settings, chess link at the top. But i'm not sure about the other games.
Charles: I've already asked about this, and Fencer said he did not want to add this. We can always hope! lol

Subject: Re: Ratings
grenv: even multi point/game/wins matches are treated the same as a single game, so whether you win a single game or a 10 wins match, your rating is effected the same amount at the same time (the end of the match).

tonyh: Then what if the player decides they don't like that move after they have already seen the location of some of their opponent's pieces that they weren't supposed to see, and then decide to undo the move and do another one, so they eventually just about know their opponent's whole setup without making a move? :-)

On IYT every square on the board is invisible to users not playing until the game is over, when everyone can see everything. The location of pieces definately should be hidden from non-playing users!

And no, there usually isn't more than about 10 opponents online of mine at a time.
(and btw, i checked and i am playing 10 against the same player...that beats our 9! rofl)

I assume this would be quite difficult to add (could be wrong), but what about in Chess, Checkers, Tank Battle, Tablut, etc, when the piece you click on has only one legal move that the move be done and you are taken right to the "submit?" screen, rather then having to click the destination square as well. It does that on IYT, and seems to be quite useful :-)

I know, i know, i'm not supposed to bombard you with requests while you're sick, but i have to mention it before i forget it!

Would it be possible (in Checkers and Tank Battle mostly) to indicate how many pieces have been taken (most likely beside the picture of the captured pieces) by each player? (It gets kinda annoying counting either remaining or captured pieces to find out how many are left.)

Go-moku is Five in a Line, with 2 small changes to the rules.
1) in Go-moku, 6 or more in a row does not count. Here it does.
2) In Go-moku, the 2nd player wins when the board fills up. Here it's a draw.

Yes, it sure is!! Very very nice job Fencer!

By the way, I REALLY REALLY like the indication of which piece was taken with the last move!! :-)
