AbigailII: Sorry to see you leave. But what you have to remember, and this applys to all discussion boards and all users - posting "off topic" and there is always a risk that messages will be removed.

In my opinion, a post about a tournament of a chess game is on topic on a chess discussion board. A post about what type of messages should be allowed in certain discussion boards is off topic on a chess board. Again, my opinion.

Anyway, this site is about the games - and it is always sad when someone lets things from message boards or private message mess up their game playing experience - which is what the whole purpose of this site is for. The discussion boards are a "bonus", and sad that some people let things that happen there get to them. I hope when you have time to "cool down" you will see this and continue to play on this site.

Its not always possible to message first. Ideally yes, thats what most mods would like to do. But in some situations its better to remove the post then message afterwards if its likely to cause a big off-topic discussion. Like this one for example! Abigail has brought a private matter to a board where it isn't really 'on topic'. But there have been so many replies to it in a fairly short time that to delete it all would be wrong, especially when its drifted 'on topic' (if mods should remove a post or ask the author to remove it).
But different mods deal with things in different ways too, and each post is acted on differently depending what it says.

Pythagoras: To be honest, i did reply to the moderator saying that they normally just delete them and there reply was " no, that is rude, i always send a private message first, giving them the opportunity in removing it themselves".

Princess Alison: Yep that is the correct way of acting i think, for example how would you feel if your above post here would be deleted without any warning, because it was NOT about Brainking itself, its structure, features and future so it was off-topic.....?

I had a rant the other day about something on a message boar that wasnt applicable, and the moderator sent me a private message asking me to remove it, which i thought was polit enough, they didnt just remove the post.

Pythagoras: I don't see many of them in the 8x8 chess variants board. Maybe it is just better moderated than others :-)
The problem with deleting a post is that some people may take it as meaning "Your post is garbage, let's put it where it belongs", when it should read "Your off-topic post is adding nothing to the thread, the thread will be more readable without it, let's do this favour to the readers".

nabla: Everything would be OK, in my opinion, if the posts haven't been deleted. I have seen 78 trillions of OFF-topic posts that haven't been deleted and some of them were just rants.......

AbigailII: I disagree. I have read your post where you asked for a tournament announcement to be moved from the board "Chess Variants 8x8", and for sure there was nothing rude or inappropriate in it. But think again : there was also nothing inappropriate or rude in the way WhisperzQ answered and deleted the two posts about this subjects.
Given that the description of that board very clearly explained that it was partly dedicated to tournament announcements in 8x8 chess variants, it was your post which was off-topic on that board.
Maybe to care for your touchyness WhisperzQ would have done better by moving it (and his answer) to another board ?
I don't like to mess with other people's affairs, but I find it too unfair to put this kind of pressure on WhisperzQ while he was only doing (correctly in my opinion) a helping job. Would you like all boards unmoderated ?

Rose, Giorgos: She said moderators, that means she didn't mean just Whisperz but also someone else must have "stepped on her bunion". If you asked me what I thought about her leaving, I'd say "I'm not disappointed".

AbigailII: Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.. Meaning if you leave here because one person upset you then you lose out on the rest of the site you love so much..

WhisperzQ is a good moderator and i don't really understand why he did that?!?! I'm completely surprised! You just expressed an opinion, nothing inappropriate or rude or insulting at all and i even agreed with you, but yet our posts were deleted without any clear reason.....
But yet this should no be reason for you to leave this site........Consider it again.......!

AbigailII: I havent experienced that. I think too this is a lot better site than anyother I have been on. Maybe they were just having a bad day. I guess there is nothing you can do about it except do what you just did.

This is a good site. Lots of games, lots of development. I enjoyed playing here. But I can't stand moderators who delete posts they don't agree with. I've resigned all my games and deleted the tournaments I created.

I'll be playing elsewhere.

BIG BAD WOLF: And to be more specific, the ratings are hidden only from the ranking lists. The still count for the "best average BKR" and "highest BKR sum" lists. And you can still see someones "hidden" rating on their profile page.

interesting - i was told (by BBW, if i'm not mistaken, but i may be) that that's not the case - that there's no way to hide someone from everyone in a fellowship board short of booting them out of the fellowship altogether.

nobleheart: Like Vikings said, anyone can play a new game and their ratings will be visiable again in the list.

No ratings have been lost - they are just "hidden". They are hidden for any pawn who has not completed a game within (I think 1 month), and are hidden for a paid member who has not completed a game within (I think 6 months?).

And as soon as a game is completed, the ratings are unhidden & updated with the new game results.

nobleheart: they haven't vanished, if they are not visable then one must not care enough about the game to keep it there, again, just play one game and it will be visable again

well I do agree no one should be allowed to"park" on a high rating.but allowing peoples rating to vanish is even more unfair.perhaps some though should be given to something truly fair.

nobleheart: It only sucks if you didn't earn your high rating on merit. Anyone with a high ranking should defend it regularly, or lose it.

nobleheart: yes, if you haven't finished a game recently, it will hide your rating, you still have it but you and others wont see it until you finish a game

I used to be able to see all my BrainKing Rating (BKR) & Your best rating positionsnow it only shows the top 10,changing my prefs does not resolve this.

The "Error! Check log file." sounds like a possible bug or error in the system - something I'm sure Fencer will be able to help with.

It's not a board you're moderating, is it? That's when the posts are supposed to be grey

when i try to hide someone in a discussion board, the post in which i clicked the "hide" link doesn't disappear (i.e., the person isn't hidden), but the post looks greyed-out and i see red text at the top of the page that says, "Error! Check log file."

what's up with that? and what and where is the log file?
