Субъект: Re:category- A, B, C
computeropponen: When I was in China to study Go for three months, I noticed Chinese chess is played on every streetcorner. It's really popular! I played a few games of XiangQi but it's hard to get better when there are so few real life opponents in my country.

computeropponen: I see. Btw, as you're from China, do you also play Go?

computeropponen: That's why it is "Provisional".

computeropponen: It seems you write more than you play - is there a reason for this? Don't you like to play?

And even blocks the elephant in that direction...

<Beren> To my knowledge they're traditional yes. The bigger pieces I created are also traditional; they might appear on brainking in the future.

I created a tournament for chess, shogi and xiangqi which starts tomorrow. Anyone who'd like to play one or more of these great chess games in one tournament should enlist quickly!

yes a very bad notation system in my opinion :(

Would mean:
Cannon on the 8th file counting from the right seen from reds point of view goes forward five 'squares' - Rook on the ninth file counting from the right seen from of BLUE's point of view goes horizontally to the 8th file

Moving a forward/backward 5... then I have to count to see where it lands!
When you missed a move in replaying, you can't see directly where you made the mistake.
Also it's very tiring to constantly switch to the other point of view. (This is the ninth file... oh no, it's the first!)

So to me it's a disaster.

<beren> So you can start your campaign for a bigger board :)

redsales> I see... and also octagonal pieces are used traditionally. I haven't found good looking ones yet. I agree that it would be nicer to use the real korean ones for korean chess. Makes it more easy to find out which game your playing when you play both chinese and korean chess.
Still, we COULD use chinese till there is a substitute. After all in Tablut chess pieces are used instead of traditional ones.

<beren> I do have bigger pieces available now.

But... you can use the same as for xiangqi! Just another board set-up.

If there is going to be a variant of xiangqi, I think korean chess (changgi) would be a good one. (http://www.chessvariants.org/oriental.dir/korean
chess.html)

<Beren> Well, I didn't draw them myself; and the original were this size. As you probably know, just enlarging them would give an ugly result; to correct it would take too much time for me.

< Fencer> On this move http://brainking.com/en/ShowGame?g=1058818&i=7
the rook's background colour isn't transparant but a familiar looking blue colour :)

<Fencer> Can you send the pack to me? I think I'm able to improve the pieces.

<playBunny> Ok! I thought maybe there isn't a sex-specific pronoun in Russian. Hungarian people also call every-one 'he' instead of he/she etc.

<jian> I see. Well, I guess when the time is right Fencer will bring up the subject again. I have some experience with making symbols on the pixel-level, to get the right size. Reducing the size often 'blurs' the picture.

P.S. It's better to call male persons 'he' instead of 'it'. Otherwise they might be offended and refuse to answer at all ;)

<jian> I don't know if you have created the symbols already, but at www.clubxiangqi.com they have very nice symbols. The nicest I have seen thus far.

again the same bug (no blue squares around the moving piece): http://brainking.com/en/ShowGame?g=985036&i=9
In both cases it was a capture by the cannon.

I just noticed a minor bug: http://brainking.com/en/ShowGame?g=984759&i=8 has no blue square around the piece that just moved.

< Chessmec> Yes, I like the cannon, very surprising piece. My only mate this far has been with two cannons behind each other on itsyourturn: deadly indeed! (I went there to play XiangQi - not necessary anymore :) )

http://www.geocities.com/yccheok/tutorial/menu.html looks useful for learning Xiangqi.

I am very greatful XiangQi and Shogi can be played at brainking now.

Redsales: I'm an absolute beginner at XiangQi, but I read somewhere the horse is less valuable than the cannon in the opening but the cannon decreases in strength during the game...
