Since I am becoming famous for leaping to conclusions.... I will make more and say that backgammon is one of the most popular games on this site? My bet is that if you make a poll and ask people who play one of the most played games here if they want a better more acceptable form of auto pass, then you will find "some kind of majority" that you mentioned  24.
