I would suggest against the "waiting" field in the "run around the pond" game - since in rounds after the 1st round, that will be very important - Take this example:

Player #1 bet 50 in round 1.

In round 2, you see it is almost to the end and he was not moved - well if he does not move, the bet will be the same as in round 1 (50 points), so you could easly just bet 51.

Maybe a general stat like "so far XX players have made a turn" or something like that would be good.

I 2nd Jasons request. Maybe something like:

"These games are: RATED"
or
"These games are: UNRATED"

Simple, strait to the point - easy to understand. :-)

The problem I see with it is that it would take more time to load each game page with loading the extra column, not to mention using a little more server resource with each game played.

Plus as was mentioned, it would "squeeze" the game board since the game notation is there.

If I could, I would recommend an option to also remove the left side column while playing on the game page - which would allow game boards to load a little faster, etc...

If you have a computer, i actually keep 2 BrainKing tabs open, one that has the games I'm playing, the other to read boards and such.

Just a quick followup to previous post.

As a side note, CurbYourEnthus & gamer07 has already been baned by Fencer (If I remember correctly from post many months ago)

I was thinking Fencer was going to remove the names from the ratings (Backgammon Race I think), but probable never got around to it.

As I understand it, chat rooms can take up a lot of resorces (more then normal), so I would not think you will see one hosted here.

What would be more likely is for someone to try to start a yahoo chat board dedicated to BrainKing users.

I don't think the moderator can see the original un-edited text, but I think it is still in the database where Fencer can see it.

And a moderator can't have a person on hide on a board. If they click "hide" on a person, it hides them from the whole board - not just themselves like it would do in a board they do not moderate.

Emne: re: DB thread succession
There are a lot of things that could be done to help make the discussion board better.

But many of these have been suggested in the past, and what I know of Fencer - He thinks of this site as a game site, and would rather spend what little extra time he has working on new games and new game features - and not worry much about the discussion boards.

Not saying it will never happen, but I would guess any disucssion board improvments would be near the bottom of the "to-do" list. :-)

... of course after I wrote that, I had a minor slow-down of the site & pages not loaded.

Not bad, but is the first time I've seen the site really slow down. :-)

Emne: Re: Fencer
I think he done it because he was expecting the site to be slow all running from the same machine - but I have not seen much of a difference.

I would turn back on time for good (well unless things do get worse, then bring back the time suspension)

Emne: Dominoes
Even though I do not play dominoes much, I would think Dominoes might bring a new wave of people to this game site just to play dominoes! (which they would then see the rest of the site, and hopefully buy a membership.)

Emne: Re: Intermixtures Chess
I think it would be an interesting idea if it could be programmed.

For example, Dark Janus Chess would be cool, but not popular enough to be a game in itself..... but if could be done with the intermixture idea would be cool.

For ratings, I would either make no ratings for the "intermix" games - or just make an "intermix" chess rating to cover them all - but that might not be good since I'm sure some mixes will make the game very one sided.

Tournaments should not be a problem - if someone wants to make a tournament of it, the mixture rules would be there for them to choose to sign up or not.

If it is not too hard to program, I would vote for it - but my guess is that it would take programming each possible version making it too much problem to program.

Emne: re: Battleboats plus+
Currently with regular Battleboats plus, white has a good advantage (61% win), so it they were to start out with 10 shots, that would give the first player a VERY big advantage.

How about something like each player starts with 1 shot, but as you sink ships, you gain the power (1, 2, or 3 shots) as you sink ships?

We can talk more about this on the Battleboats Discussion Board if you want.

You can also usually take a look at the first message on the boards in the fellowship to get an idea of a date when it was created.

Emne: Re: Fellowships
That was discussed before somewhere, but I'm for that idea.

Have a "Little Boss" which can do everything the BIG BOSS can do EXCEPT they can not delete the fellowship.

Maybe also not be able to remove a member from the fellowship (let BIG BOSS do that), but send invites, accept new players, creat tournaments, etc.... would be very helpful.

I think you are confusing "match of points" with a "doubling cube".

In the current match of points, there is not cube - which mean there are no gammons or back gammons.

Once the cube is introduced here, then those games will start to see gammons & backgammons... as per the rules of Backgammon.

If all a person does is basic web browsing & e-mail, WebTV can be a good option. You don't have to worry about slow computer, computer crashs, and the biggest - you do not have to worry about Viruses!

But I would suggest any more talk on this should be moved to the Computer Board

I hate it when users leave one of my fellowships because I don't know why. I mean if it's just because they don't like it, or something like that - that is fine. But lets say if it's because we don't do this, or we need to do that - things like that helps.

For example, someone not too long ago left one of my fellowships but was nice enough to tell me why. It was something I could fix right away, and was able to re-invite him back.

So I think to have a box for a "reason you are leaving this fellowship" when a person leaves is a good idea, of course they can always leave it empty if they want.

Or since there does seem to always be a lot of games in the waiting room, maybe a filter to just show a certain game type - or even a group of game types. "Just show Chess Games" - to show all chess & variants. Etc... etc...

Does the automatic vacations work for all users? (Pawns, knights, Rooks, etc..) who have vacation days left, or is it just for Knights and above?

Plus I know there was talk at one time to limit the amount of automatic vacations to only a certain amount of days at one time. Was that put into place, or let say if I'm unable to log on, will up to 30 days of vacation be put onto my games.

Thanks!

Knights and above also have things like a Notepad, and the hide feature in the discussion boards. Those are 2 that I can think of off the top of my head.

... but if there issues or problems which are keeping a pawn from paying, why expect that person to pay up just to be listen to. If a pawn has a good idea about improving the site, and Fencer thinks it is a good improvment - then great for everyone! And at that point it could even be enough to get the pawn to pay up. So I think we should encourage all suggestions from everyone.

You may find this shocking, but some people don't like to be annoyed. If you do not want them to see what you are doing either, you can also put them on your enemy list.

But this site is here to play board games, not be annoyed by people.

3. oktober 2004, 21:32:54

The point of putting someone on your enemies list is so that person will stop bothering you - so it's good that the enemy can't see what your doing - in my opinion.

The more I play Espionage, I would agree that having a list of known pieces captured would be nice.

And still a great suggestion - have an option to put game notes field above game board.

And still a great suggestion - have an option to put the "move" buttons above the game board (Once move is finished - less page scrolling - faster game play)

Emne: re: Card Games
Luckly this is not a boardgame site, but a game site - so IF Fencer ever gets some free time way down the road, it would be something to look at.

I agree that most card games will not work on a turn based game site though..... BUT at the same time if we could get a card game to work, it would again set this site above the other turn based game sites!

Emne: Card Game
I would normally say card games would not work on a turn based site, but something like gin/gin rummy might just work the more I think about it. 500 points would probable take way too long on a turn based site - maybe to 150 points.

You could always hide the archive messages, but then it hides it in all games, not just that one. If the game is still going to take awhile to play, maybe giving the game # to Fencer, maybe he would be able to go and remove the long comment.

But if there is an 1 empty space, the last jump may be made into that space, colapsing the row - leaving the board full with no spaces (since the jumping frog took the last open space)

Oh, I see what you are saying - there will be an empty row on the outside where the board just shifted from. In my mind, I did not think of those as empty rows - just that the board actually got smaller. (but would probable be easier to program and such if it was considered an empty row.

Then a rule would have to be put into place that all shifts go right or down. :-)

Actually it would be possible if you were to empty 2 rows, and have the last jump land in the only other empty spot in the third row. It would not happen often, but possible.

Froglet Linetris: When a complete row or column is empty, it is "colapsed".

Minor rules: If the colapse results in no open spaces, then the next person has to click on a green frog just like at the start of the game.

Are you also going to make it so 1 fellowship can have multiply discussion boards? One of the reasons I have 3 fellowships is because the games played in each are very different - All gammon games in 1 fellowship, all boat games in 1 fellowship, and a mixture of "newer" games in the 3rd fellowship.

Now that I've fallen in love with my 3 fellowships, how about a limit of 3? :-)

Plus if anyone has any suggestions, ideas, etc... for the "brain Game", you can also send me a private message - I'll keep the list of ideas in my Notepad and edit it with other idea until a time Fencer is ready for it - and should give him a good base to work from if he does end up wanted to do this!

Emne: Brain Game
Actually back when it was first talked about, Fencer liked the idea - like creating a new game on the site - the "Brain Game".

But other things could help Fencer out for example now he was a store that sells items, bonus brains for items bought. bonus brains for extending your own membership maybe. bonus brains for donations. So lets say you want someone on the list but don't have enough brains to buy it - maybe a donation of every dollar gets you 10 extra brains - which would in turn get Fencer extra $$ in return for brains - which in almost all cases does not really buy anything that will hurt Fencer or his goal to make this site self relient when it comes to $$ income.

Also another things that Fencer would gain is pawns would be watching some of the cool things paid members could do like post in different colors, etc... which I believe would get some more pawns to buy memberships. The more "fun" you can bring to the site, the more people you will get to support the site.

And so you don't have to search, here is what I had at the time. This is just an outline, and more details may still need to be worked on.

=============================

Game Rules:
- Only Knights and above can earn Brains.
- If your membership expires, so does anything you have previously purchased. If you re-purchase a membership, you will be given back what you had before.
- Rules, prices, store items, etc... may change at any time.
- If you are found cheating in ANY WAY to gain more Brains - all your Brains will be taken away, and your privledge of playing with Brains will be taken away.

How to earn Brains:

1 Brain - for each TOURNAMENT game win. (Not sure if a rule can be put into place of limit 2 Brains per day against same person - to help curb any possible cheating)

2 Brains - for each tournament win (for tournaments with total 4-8 players)
3 Brains - for each tournament win (for tournaments with total 9-15 players)
4 Brains (16-25), 5 Brains (26-35)... and so on

SITE Tournaments ran by the site may contain EXTRA BONUS brains for tournament wins.

USER Tournaments can also include EXTRA BONUS brains which has to be "paid" for with users own brains.

=========
Brain Store

10 Brains:
- Post in different color
- Change background color in post
- Post in a ONE SIZE bigger font

25 Brains:
- Include different colors in profile
- Include different font sizes in profile

50 Brains:
- Add 1 Vacation day to total
- Add an icon (From selection of 10-20 different icons) to a post or message.

75 Brains:
- Have a tournament placed on the top of the tournament page list. (1 week max)
- Add an icon (APPROVED - user choice) to a post or message.

100 Brains:
- Add APPROVED (user choice) picture to profile (Max of 3 pictures - 300 Brains)
- Make your knight/rook icon different colors! (Choose between 5 regular color icons - red, blue, purple, orange, yellow)

200 Brains:
- You will not have the ability of your "smiles" to automaticly turn into cute smiley Icons forever! (So when you type :-) - it will show up as a small smile icon in any post or message!)
- Make your knight/rook icon different colors! (Choose between 4 cool animated icons - Glittery, flashing, tie-dye multi-color, spinning)

300 Brains:
- Extend Rook membership by 1 month (2 month for Knight)

500 Brains:
- ADD SPECIAL ICONS next to your name! (have a choice of 4-5 different small cute icons which will sit next to the rook/knight - and if user has enough Brains, can buy more then 1!)

1000 Brains:
- Add an APPROVED message to the "system news" which will show up on everyones main page for 48 hours.

I while back I purposed a whole "brain" game system - that is you could win brains by winning games, tournaments, etc...

Then you could also "bet" or wager brains, or buy things with the brains like special icons next to your name, extra vacation days, etc.....

It was in a lot more detail - I believe if you search or scan through here far enough you could find it.

I think the point is that anyone has a right to their opinion, and can state such opinion (as long as within the rules of the site), but that does not mean the Fencer or anyone else will share that opinion, no matter how much you support the site. (if that is where you are trying to go with it.)

I would like to be able to change the name of the fellowship's discussion board after the fellowship's name itself has been changed.
