Asunto: Moth Balls.. sounds like they do the trick..
but if some of you may just not be aware of.. aren't they poisonous?? If you have small children around.. or that can access the area you are trying to maintain.. you may wish to use the smell of citrus to keep the kitties out.. Orange rinds or Lemon peels.. just squeeze the peels onto the dirt the oils will help deter the pesky kitties.. you probably could even bury the peels..

Dolittle: It could be.. will have to go to the storage and look.. it just sprinkles onto the bushes.. leaves a white dust.. but, it kills the insects and doesn't hurt the bushes..

I usually place 3 or 4 seeds in each little nitch. If they all start growing you can thin them out by pulling out the weaker ones..

Foxy Lady: we have areas where there is high amounts of bentonite.. so if you are a home garden grower lover.. you have to really check out the soils around the property.. before purchasing the home.. I remember that one house in Greybull had lots of bentonite in one part of the back yard.. luckily the back area was huge.. when bentonite gets wet.. it acts like quicksand.. and pulls you in.. James lost many shoes in them.. haha..

Foxy Lady: Our Seasons are pretty evenly distributed here.. Springtime is my favorite though since everything is nice and green..

we can get frosts up til about mid May.. so plants that are out in the open.. well.. that is chancie.. I did plant Tom bushes in Early May.. and we had a frost but, was prepared and able to protect them since it wasn't too bad of one.. so just depends on what type of plants and if they are exposed to the air .. Most peeps will start planting stuff indoors about this time and then wait to transplant in mid may.. for home gardens though.. haha.. tough to do for farmers but, then again they grow sugar beets, corn, and barleys and wheats as well as alphalpha mostly..
we are a very dry climate.. so limited to certain veggies..

Asunto: Re: Re:
Foxy Lady: we can start planting about mid may also.. but, earlier on some things.. we also have a short season.. harvest here I believe is Early September..

But again.. it is what you are planting and how much water is needed..

Wild?? you are considered Mid West as well?? Wow.. the mid section of the state must make up most of the territory.. haha.. never knew that..

Asunto: Foxy.. Take the fallen leaves from the fall
and place them around and cover as much as you can.. That should help protect them and insulate them as much as possible.. in the spring.. cut the limbs back on the bushes (rose), it will spark new growth..

Asunto: Yes Bernice.. I do agree..
Foxy do you have a circular trench around the trunk.. about what.. 4-5 inches from the plant?? I usually dig one out with my hand and place water into it.. :)

Asunto: Kewl Tip Foxy..
I also heard that using the citrus juices like oj and grapefruit juice will keep the cats out of your garden as well.. Take some juices and sprinkle it around the boundaries of your garden.. or even put the rinds around the garden..

Asunto: Are you into Tomatoes?
make cages out of wooden steaks.. build them 42" high.. and 21"-24" wide..

You will need 4 steaks cut to 42", and 8 pieces cut to 21-24".. nail first steak to supporting steak at the top of long steak.. nail the second supporting steak about 18" down..
This gives plenty of room to place wooden cage at least 6" into ground..

It also will hold up longer and will give the Toms more support.
