plaintiger: After adding the person to your friends, go to the friends list and there should be a padlock symbol next to the name. Click on it to add/remove public friends (you'll need to wait for permission from them).

plaintiger: Somehow, someway, this explanation should be added to the site in a way easily findable by users of Brain King.

I suggest adding it to "Tip of the Day", but anywhere intuitive should be good.
