MadMonkey: Why not just keep the game links on a separate column. Something like

1909255 kid_game_2001 0:1 MadMonkey

(or games in a right column or something other)

I don't think any such facility is available to pawns, though.

Subject: Who starts?
In the old days the white used to start in every game.
Then, to make things right, the rules were adjusted to some of the games, and black or red or whatever starts some of the games now.
When you start a new game, on the New Game page and you choose the color, it clearly states which color goes first, so you can choose.
But on the Waiting Games list, no such info is present. So instead of you'll play as black / white, can there be an aditional signal that shows if I'll start the game or not? It's hard to remember the settings in 90+ games.

Subject: Number of messages per page
Why is it that the number of messages that display at a time in the message box is controlled by a setting set on a discussion board page? At least I didn't find anywhere else to change it. I noticed it also controls how many bugs display in the bug tracker.

Can't these be separate settings (preferrable) or at least be settable in those pages as well?

Subject: Profile page
On the main Profile page, users can write a text about themselves. Some users have a very looong text in there, and you have to scroll all the way down the page to find the Friends/Enemies links and the invite to a game option.
Why not push these actions to the top of that text, so that all the options are easilly accessible?

Subject: Re:
bouncybouncy: There is an option in Settings to sort your next games by time of last move (select Ascending, but not sure)
With this setting, any games that you have just played, and then your opponent comes and plays right back will be left at the bottom of the list, allowing you to play all the other games first. So, worst case scenario, you'll play a move against all your online players before playing a move in every other game, but it will garantee that you make a move in every game before playing in the same game again.

Since the setting doesn't affect the ordering in the main page, if it doesn't seem to work try to switch from ascending to descending...

Hope it helps.

Subject: BrainKing.info
As it is now, everytime I log in to BrainKing.com and there is a new post in the blog at BrainKing.info, a box with the begining of the message appears at the top op my home page.
However, since I've subscribed the RSS feeds for that site, I will receive it all in my news client (where I find it much more ocnfortable to read, as a matter of fact).
And since I think that box at the top of the page takes much space, I simply click remove... until a new post appears.

The request - Fencer, could there be an option not to display the blog entries from the homepage? You could still leave it there as a default, for new users to become aware of it, but give others (especially those that already syndicate its content) the option to view it as they see fit.

Subject: Menu
For the hundredth time I've been searching for Game Rules in the top of the Menu so I thought I'd finally suggest it to be organized slightly differently:

(Site - playing)
Main page, New game, Waiting games, Tournaments, Team tournaments, Stairs, Winners, Ratings, Fellowships, Ponds, Statistics, Player list, Who is online, Discussion boards, Game rules

(Personal Info)
My profile, Friends, Blocked users, Online opponents, Message box, Game editors, Settings

(Site - other info)
Paid membership, Store, Support us, Brains, Send invitation, Search, Help, FAQ, Links, What is new, Bug tracker, Contact

Logout
---

I know it will probably confuse all existing members for a while. And make the page a little longer for those using Row layout.
But it will make things look so much tidier for newcomers...
Anyway, I'd like to know what others think about it...

pgt: How about a system along the lines (counting for action points or not - you decide)
When the game is over you win a number of points that equals the number of moves divided by the sum of all the time it took for you to make each move in that game (maybe take out a couple of the slowest moves to balance things when you go on vacations and such).
It would give you a "moves per hour" type of statistic that, if published seperatly, could help others choose between slow and fast moving players as well. It wouldn't also matter weather you have many open games or not - your overall "moves per hour" rating would be more established if based on 10000 games, but would be just as meaningful if only based on a couple of games per month.
Of course, it it added up to the action points, the more games you finished, the more points you'd win ;)

Subject: Player's Dictionary
I think that the layout for this new feature may not be the best. With all those languages, the table will either be too wide or the columns so small that things won't be readable.

Maybe a better layout would be to have just the user's language and a combobox to select the language you want the dictionary of...

Summertop: If the player was rated 500 for instance, would you play against him/her?
  • If not, then you can choose not to play against unrated players as well.
  • If yes, then you'd probably have lost a whole lot more than 56 points. So why do you complain here? ;)

Marfitalu: Paying members can use them in their messages for pawns. Pawns just won't see the smiles, that's all. But pawns have ways to know what smile you're using. It's just that some members are new and just don't know where to get that type of information (especially since the help system is still in the making ) and some missunderstandings may arise.

The way I see it, everybody should be able to see whatever formating you put in the messages. After all, sometimes the format is part of the message.
Pawns just wouldn't have access to the special editors that make writing those messages so mush easier, weather it's the smile popup or the RTE editor or whatever else that comes along in the future.

But that's just my opinion and I've already expressed it many times in the past before.

The final result is too favouring for the "forgetfull". Read "remove from stairs" instead of "retire".

Anyway, the main idea was: remove people that are timing out to avoid others to abuuse them to climb. And to clean up after those missguided souls that decide to leave the site and don't come back and have entered some stairs before leaving...

rod03801: It would be usefull even for out of fellowship stairs.
Maybe automatically retiring players after 2 or 3 matches lost by timeouts? Or when they timeout in the first step.

This would prevent people that time out on fast stairs because they went on vacations to be removed from the stairs because of some automatic mechanism.
And solve the problem of having dozens of accounts in 10 years time that are being abused to artificially stretch the stairs.

Can there please be a link on the profile to set the vacation days? I find myself always going to my profile looking for the place to set them only to remember myself after a while that they are set in Settings. I think it's so much obvious to look for them in my profile since it's where I look them up for everyone else.
I think a simple link next to the vacation days left would probably be enough.

The fellowships pages are getting very crowded. How about a small tab menu like in the Profile pages or in Settings? The options would be Members, Teams, Discussion Boards, Torunaments, etc.

Or since DBs are more dynamic they could be displayed on the main page and the rest separately... I don't know. I'll leave the details for those that can actually use fellowships

BIG BAD WOLF: Ok, I'll explain better, as I should have in the first place.
Take this page for instance. It has a list with all game types from a given tournament. I can see in which ones I'm playing and how many players are playing at each one of them. But to see how many of them are actually completed, I have to manually enter every one of them to see.
If the winner's name was displayed in front of it, or at least an indication of "closed" or "finished" or something like that, I'd know that information at a glance.

Subject: Tournament lists
On the game list in the tournament page, once a tournament is completed, maybe the name of the winner could appear in front of the game type. Not only it is a "reward" for the winner to see his/her name there, but it would also help to know in a glance which ones are already over or which ones still have games pending.
If not the name of the winner, at least the number of completed/total games. That would help a lot when I'm browsing through tournaments to see what's finished or not... but I prefer the winner idea better ;)
