Subject: Turtle trick #1245
Sorry to have to bring up again the old, old subject, but it has to be discussed somewhere, and I see no better board.

I have this opponent who invented a scheme that demotes our friend the Vanda lover to the rank of amateur. here's the system:
  • Do NOT activate auto vacation.
  • Have all your games of at least 5 days timeout length. you can have red-dot games, they wont' disturb the scheme.
  • Now manually set vac days. Say, today is Monday and your weekend days are Saturday and Sunday. You set your vacation days as follows:
NO NO YES YES YES SAT SUN
YES YES YES YES YES SAT SUN
YES YES YES YES YES SAT SUN
YES YES YES YES YES SAT SUN

Etc. Leave a couple of unset days as reserve. All your 5-day games will have a timeout time far in the future.

  • Now here's the beautiful part. You never use up any vacation day! How? tomorrow is not set. Come tomorrow (Tuesday) you unset Wednesday. Your vacation days now are
DONE NO NO YES YES SAT SUN

Apparently the system permits you to unset a day in the future, and your unset days couter goes up by one. Every week, or so, add 5 dayes so that your future vacation days are always 4 weeks thick, at least.

And, from time to time, whenever the mood strikes you, make a move against someone in a game. Mind, do it slowly, savor the click. You do it so seldom!

The only drawback is that you have to log in daily to do this little maneuver. But you don't have to move in any game if you don't really feel up to it.

Beautiful, isn't it?

Pedro Martínez: But did you know
That while displaying a game, right clicking on the third character in the game's name (for example, the 'e' in 'chess') will pop up a little screen displaying the best move for the position?

Well done Fencer!
Unfortunately, this feature is only valid today.

"GERRY": This is probably happening very rarely if at all. The basic problem is what to do about people whose pleasure is to play each move in each game 5 minutes before the timeout expires. The answer is nothing, nothing can be done because the rules are respected. Too bad. it's a tough world.

Modified by rabbitoid (30. December 2008, 13:52:48)
by the way: I have this opponent who sets vacation days for next year, out of his stock from this year. Then, come Jan 1st, he can add to them.

This is surely not the way this is intended to work. why, in a couple of years he can set 365 off days! Now, if I could figure out the way to make this gimmick work for me on my job -

Why this guy ever paid for a black rook, if he goes this far to find loopholes in order not to move in games, is beyond me.

I may be a bit slow, but what has the fact that the tournament spammer is a pawn got to do with anything? rooks can be pests too, if they choose, and we can all come up with several names who spring to mind (the names will be different for each mind, so don't bother...)

And if the gentleman in question is now a pawn, it just means that he left us the tourneys as a going away present before reverting from rook. Nice of him, come to think of it...

Subject: The statistics on the Braininfo article
I'm somewhat sceptical about your figures. Can you elaborate?
How do you define "use of a browser"? global number of page requests or per user? since heavy user X will use the same computer, browser and environment (most of the time) he will bias the statistics to his browser, no?
Still, the data is interesting. Could we have, somewhere in the statistics, a breakdown of the use of browsers?
By the way, the "Statistics" doesn't show as a link on my page, but maybe that's only because I'm condemned to IE6 at work . Never mind, I can still see it using the address http://brainking.com/en/Statistics

Set an open ended elimination tournament, with a fixed starting date. On the starting date, all players which are above the 8, 16, 32... limit, in the order of their subscription, are chopped off. So that it's a first come - first play tournament

As MadMonkey rightly points out, trying to guess in advance if you can interest 32 or 64 or 128 people in your tournament is impossible.

probability to get a double: 1/6.
probability to get 6 doubles in a row: (1/6)^6 = 1/46656
if anyone gets this, the random generator is probably wrong.

probability not to get a double: 5/6
probability not to get a double, 6 times in a row: (5/6)^6 = 15625/46656 or about 1/3. well within reasonable.

In a recently published article on the brainking.com site, you claimed that the so called browser named « firefox » is not only better, but, quote, 14,341 than our product, Internet Explorer.

Now, unless you are prepared to demonstrate to an independent expert how you calculate this ratio, you may expect to hear from our legal department.

Subject: Re: 5000 waiting games
srnity: one more question concerning the invites: robtoo has currently 1480 started games, started presumably before he went pawn. The system should let him finish the started games, but not start new ones, since 1480 is slightly larger than the allowed 20 for pawn . but in that case, shouldn't the invitations be eliminated?

I went and accepted one invite, and the game was created, and his count went up to 1481. (I then deleted the game, which may sound rude, but I'll forgive myself).

It looks like a bug.
