What if black had 2 or 4 "super pawns" - that is they can move 1 space any of the 8 directions. (Up, Up-right, right, right-down, down, down-left, left, left-up) (Can move & Capture in those directions - 1 space)

Put them in the back row - possible where the bishops normally are, or if 4 - where bishops & rooks normally are)

It will not be a very big change, but should give black more of a chance and possible "even" out the game some.

Any thoughts?

(Or possible a new game - "Super Horde Chess" - maybe even make the whole back row of black pawns - 6 total - be "super pawns")

I've seen this discussion of 'fairness' in maharaja scattered around the boards for some time. I'd just like to point out that for the beginning player, white has one advantage simply in the mechanics of the program: The board will not -let- you place your maharaja in check. In short, you can, in a very short time, find all your choices for moves simply by running the mouse over all the squares. You only have one piece to move, and only one to worry about. Of course, that's countered by the fact that black only needs to check the moves for one piece, but for the inexperienced player, this can be quite an advantage. Black must check all his pieces to keep everyone guarded, -and- find a way to force an 'omnimovable' piece into check without causing a stalemate (draw). For a semi-deecent chess player, this isn't all that difficult, but it can be quite a challenge to the beginner.

I've a hunch the game might have originated with the intention of conditioning people to the challenges of fighting under seemingly hopeless odds.

I am proud to congratulates N°1 in rating HerculesBeast !!!

60 games with black : 60 victories ! What a performance

A cool variation could be that black has to announce the whole game before starting.

All that proves is that it is not guaranteed that white will win regardless of what either player does. Of course white could lose the game if they wanted to...?

Still, there is a hope for black, it is not completely pre-ordained ... so far I have a 16:8 win:loss as black (8:0 as white). For the site it is about 3 white: 1 black.

No chance for black,WhisperzQ!
The strategy for W is easy :He changes some pawns in the opening, gives three or four pieces for two pawns (each) and then he invades with queen and/or rook in Black`s position. From backwards he can beat B`s important pawns.
No problem for W,if he doesn`t play too bad :).

Not quite so Caissus ... black does have some hope in horde chess and a win cannot be forced from move 1 by white.

I think the original idea,to play with a maharadja is good.(Other names for this piece are "general" or "amazone")And there have been in the past some interesting suggestions to improve this variation to a balanced game, not only for children:).Btw we have the same situation in "Hordechess"!

I noticed that many players only play maharadjah with white for you... If you look on the "Waiting games", you have dozens of challenge with black, which is not fair.

Could they be proud about their rating? Do not they get bored?

Ok, as ughaibu said, it could be kind of beginner game for kids to learn how to move the pieces :-)

<You type the following:

Text goes here

and you replace the "/game/ArchivedGame?g=253467" with everything in the URL after "brainking.com". That way it works for everyone, whether they are using "brainking.com" or "www.brainking.com" or anything else. For external links, you have to replace it with the entire URL.

Subject: Interesting games #1
It appears there has been no entries in this DB for nearly 3 months now. So I suggest that we start a little series of "show 'n tell" of favorite or interesting games that we loopsters have played. I'd like to start things off with the following recently finished game of mine.

What makes this game so interesting to me was the tenseness of the battle. The beginning was rather bland, but around moves 21 & 22 I began to feel a lot of pressure. It kept building. Clearly the momentum was to my opponent’s favor. On his 30th move B@g6, I was getting concerned. 33. Rxh7+ made things look bleak for me. I had to sacrifice my Q now. About this moment or perhaps a little before, my opponent sent this message, “Hey, this is rather fun. Lots of play in the game. Thanks Trotter. Whats next?” To which I replied: “this isnt quite over yet. let's see.”

Then on my 34th, rather than capture his B to save my R, I counterattacked. And the momentum swung in my favor. A series of checks brought black back from the jaws of disaster. White did not answer my last check, allowing the time to run out. No matter, it was mate next move anyway.

Now, who’s next in line? Show us your favorite recent game.

Subject: Stalemate
I am quite certain it is possible to stalemate in this game, but it certainly never happened until yet :-)

I tried a screenshot of a possible stalemate.

stalemate in extinction

Last move : 1. h6-h7 ; Na3-b1 stalemate

Since there is no "chess", stalemate is quite unlikely to happened.

This is certainly a draw. In some versions of AC capturing the enemy king with yours is a draw. I think this is a good implementation. However even with the current rules this is a draw. Silly play by black of course.

Sorry about that, I removed the link

Here is the final position:
White Kh1, Pc6 Ph6
Black Kh2 Bg1 Rg2 Pc7 Pe6 Ph7

But I admit it is not a natural position... I could have win before, was just wondering if stalemate exists...

well there's certain starting postions that each side has a clear advantage, just that most of them that I have played so far have been black.

Dark Atomic would be silly, but there is no force win for white! I would play 1...e5 or 1...g5 randomly, then if pawn explode 2.. Qh4 and win ;)

By the way, I would rather play 3-moves dark atomic then 800-moves anti-backgammon !

Dark Maharajah would be much dumber, since white can physically not win !

7. January 2004, 15:13:19

Dark Atomic chess would be silly and usually finish in about 3-4 moves. Just my opinion, I like both but wouldn't play the combo.
:)

Kevin: yep, you missed ... dark atomic loop horde 3-check maharajah janus (chess)

7. January 2004, 00:51:51

And Fencer also said that he doesn't want to create every possible variation, or it would be too hard to tell them apart - such as Dark Janus, Dark Gothic, Dark Maharajah, Dark Horde, Dark Atomic, Atomic Janus, Atomic Gothic, Atomic Horde, Atomic Maharajah, Dark Atomic Janus, Dark Atomic Gothic, Dark Atomic Horde, Dark Atomic Maharajah... (am i missing any?) :-)

And that's just the chess variations! (which, i admit, would be most of them).

The problem with combinations is that there could be too few people who will play them. For Atomic Dark Chess only people who likes both of them will likely to play it.

Subject: Triad of Maharajah and Assassins
I agree with Gary's point-spread analysis, with a Maharajah and two non-royal "Assassins" to even up the score. I like this as a teaching game, with (as it currently stands) one piece having the ability to move as each piece of the opposing team. The fact that it is alone stacks the deck against it, but with two non-royal pieces with similar powers, it will allow for some danger for Black. I do think it should be modified to make it

In the absence of that, I like ughaibu's idea of set matches.

But I prefer the addition of two non-royals. A sharper game is needed.

I have discovered that you can play this variant in real-time at the ICC,(http:// www.chessclub.com/) as 5,10 or 20 minutes game. But it is possible to play for free only as guest and without rating and name.
Even so it is a good training :).If someone wants to play such some short games please send me a private message.

It's just occured to me that this could be a game if it's played in matches of one with each colour and the aim is to win in the fewest moves, (as black of course).

27. December 2003, 20:24:34
ughaibu
I think it's very unlikely that this is a game in the competitive sense. It seems to me most likely to be a way to introduce complete beginners, probably children, to the moves of the chess pieces. The beginner of course takes black and the teacher white, shogi has a comparable teaching tool in which the beginner has a full set of pieces while the teacher has only a king and three pawns in hand.
