A ladder is an ordered list of players, where challenges by lower ranked players are required to change the order.
On other sites this seems to me to favour those players who play often and is not as satisfying as ratings or tournaments. I wouldn't bother personally.

how about a revolution this year instead of an election. It worked well the last time.

I am an avid card player. If I feel like playing cards online I'd go to a realtime site. I would recommend against card games here.

Sorry, I was called away and forgot to remove it. :( didn't know it was known either.

i was wondering if it was possible to maximize the width of the notes and messageboard (see previous post). I made a similar comment during a game and now it's hard to move! lol.

I'll edit the post in a little while.

i tried hide and it seems to work (hiding that players posts for that board only).

Now, how do I unhide?

Never mind, next time back onto the board the option appears.

ughaibu is trying to say that extra clicks slows down the fast players. This seems like a small effect, but I'm sure it was the comic effect that was sought.

i disagree. The code has a bug because the requirements were incorrect and that was passed on to the code.

If it were more obvious you would probably agree.

for example, once again, if the queen moved only one square at a time because the engineer didn't understand the rules of chess, I would consider that a bug, or defect, not a missing feature.

10. September 2004, 22:37:15
grenv
Would also need to double the points for a gammon and triple for a backgammon.

10. September 2004, 22:36:50
grenv
i indeed concur.

You could also implement in single games: Winning a doubled game could count as winning 2 games in the ratings.

10. September 2004, 20:30:57
grenv
I respectfully disagree.

If the queen was able to move only like a king, would that be a bug or a missing feature?

Just because the code is behaving as the engineer meant it to doesn't mean there is no bug!!

10. September 2004, 20:03:35
grenv
Please fix the bug where you are not forced to use the higher die in backgammon if both can't be used.

Also could you add it to the "Known bugs" tab?

thanks

I agree with BuilderQ. If you need time off use a vacation day, there are plenty of them for this purpose. For many people a day off may be a day more likely to be spent playing games ;)

6. September 2004, 20:17:14

is the purpose to not count said holidays against game time?

Isn't this a game site? Let's keep our conversations somewhat decent if possible. I think most minors would be amused by your flirting (not in a good way), or not understand it. Just don't arrange to meet them in the park and I think we will all survive.

NeekyNake,

You just listed the top players at the first 6 games on the list. What did you think that list was?

Nice to see a little healthy conflict. ;)

And in answer to the rather obvious jibe about programming knowledge, I am aware it would be easy, i merely stated that would be the only reason not to implement it in my opinion.

I second the use of the Polls link to guage the real preference of paying members.

28. August 2004, 22:09:26
grenv
there appears to be no reason not to implement this as an optional attribute for the player, other than "it is difficult to implement and other things take priority". If this could be stated then I believe nobody would bring it up again.

28. August 2004, 18:37:47
grenv
Correct. For instance in checkers if you can capture more than one piece you don't capture one, then wait for a pass before capturing the next one.

:)

26. August 2004, 23:54:13
grenv
Neither reason is good:
1. You can chat by sending messages.
2. The games in question are not affected by remembering the previous position. Besides, you can scroll through the moves if you like.

Real reason: Personal preference of the developer.

26. August 2004, 05:32:02
grenv
they play single game matches because there is no cube. If there was a doubling cube I would never play single matches again.

26. August 2004, 02:22:40
grenv
Usually a match is played up to a certain number of points, for instance first to 9 points. Gammon counts 2, backgammon counts 3, doubling cube multiplies the score. So a doubled gammon counts 4 points. Not accepting the double loses, but counts only 1 with the cube where it was before the double.

Clear?

:)

Subject: Re: rating of inactive players
Actually degrading would only make sense if the rating was made to approach 1300 in a hyperbolic fashion.

I think hiding is just as good, but perhaps requiring 4 games to reinstate?

Just my 2c

8. August 2004, 17:43:51
grenv
i have the same issue with some established ratings as well. There are people who play 25 games and then stop playing. How long before they stop being on top?

8. August 2004, 16:44:58
grenv
I think no play for a year should mean your rating disseappears and you start again. If you haven't lost your skill prove it by regaining the rating by actually playing.

I don't see Fischer on the FIDE list, so there must be a mechanism for removing inactive players.

8. August 2004, 15:40:24
grenv
As to the refusal to take challenges, I renew my request to do something about keeping the ratings current. No activity for a long period of time should either start degrading the rating, or just eliminating it.

8. August 2004, 00:05:27
grenv
they're as meaningful as they purport to be, which is not all that much, which is why they are provisional.
Actually I find it useful to see how the new players are doing, and perhaps challenge on if their rating seems too high :)
Also if I'm playing a new game it's kind of fun to see some sort of rating early on. It makes no difference to the end result so why hide it?

7. August 2004, 21:32:38
grenv
But why not? Nobody has presented a reason not to show them yet. Just saying "I don't think they should be shown" does not constitute a reason.

Subject: Re: Provisional ratings
Who cares if they aren't accurate? That's why they're provisional. I like to see the ratings after 4. In fact I'd like to see them after 1!

Actually it's not stricly autopass. Some games allow more than one move (Amazons for instance). Just because the number of moves is unknown does not equate to auropass in my opninion.

4. August 2004, 03:56:23
grenv
Autopass is the work of the devil! Thou shalt be smote from the earth for even mentioning it! Or so I'm lead to believe.

A good rule in the battleship boardgame I have is that each ship has a special attack. Subs can shoot missiles horizontally or vertically until something is het on that row/column. Battleships can hit a 3x3 block of squares, but only once, etc. Rules such as this should be considered for alternative versions i think.

excellent ideas. I wonder if brainking has kept historical data?

29. July 2004, 15:58:13
grenv
I think there is a bug, and it seems to be recent and only applies to backgammon. Clearly if I lose to someone rated below me I should move down more than losing to someone rated above me. Note that in all cases the ratings are well established.

28. July 2004, 20:26:36
grenv
Every backgammon game I've played in the last several weeks has ended up with a + or - 8 to my rating.

Losing to someone rated 500 points lower: -8
Losing to someone rated 200 points higher: -8
Beating someone rated 300 points lower: +8
Beating someone rated 300 points higher: +8

I've started keeping my alerts as evidence.

This is clearly a mistake in my mind.

:)

Having lived in the U.S for 7 years it never ceases to amaze me how seriously "bad" words are taken, yet extreme violence seems to be ignored. The movie scarface was shown on a free to air channel complete with people cut up with a chainsaw but with "bad words" censored. LOL.

17. July 2004, 15:29:39
grenv
I think censorship is stupid, my kids are no worse for having heard or seen swear words. In fact I show them that they are silly words instead of words to be feared. They seem to be still able to play and laugh freely. Amazing.
