I think it wouldn't be that hard to implement.

1. Simply loop through all the possible results for the games yet to play (# of permutations is 3^n where n is the number of games still playing).

2. Determine the group winner for each permutation.

3. If the group winner is always the same, then award the group to that player.

In most cases it's clear cut. If someone wins every game, for instance, why are we waiting?!?!

ah, it seems my intuition was correct! Thanks Rex

You would make the same argument for backgammon i believe. Since it isn't consistant on the site the argument could go either way.

2. January 2005, 18:06:18
grenv
I believe I got shouted down on that point already.

The current setup would require the player who has just been hit to click the submit button (as in BG when you cannot move). Obviously this is stupid but there you have it.

2. January 2005, 04:44:39
grenv
I suggest we move the rest of this to the Backgammon board since it's beyond a Feature Request.
By the way it's a weak start. A week start is that employed by people on auto-vacation.

it would certainly change some of the starting moves. Not as good to leave builds etc, but you're still playing catch up. Basically you're starting with 2 pieces captured, if that wasn't bad then why capture?

2. January 2005, 04:25:43
grenv
Regardless of you liking it, it is an inferior opening position and would lose way more often than it would win.

2. January 2005, 04:13:11
grenv
i don't get it. Clearly the Nackgammon postion is inferior.

The only problem with that argument is that you are still paying here and not elsewhere. iyt was so bad I stopped paying them and came here. If you find a site that is as good as this AND has autopass you could let us know and maybe that would have an effect.

30. December 2004, 19:19:17
grenv
i like the way you surreptitiously put in Autopass without actually asking for it. As I just did of course!

30. December 2004, 00:46:07
grenv
I do that on a real board, which is actually much better at it than an electronic one.

I would have to say a suggestion to change the rules does belong here as a feature request. I would also like a list of captured pieces, though I don't think the rank should be known if it wasn't discovered during the game (it could just be blank).

I think he's talking about "real life" time.

whatdidyousay: I'm surprised you timed out. Every other player I'm up against goes to auto vacation. Did you use all your vacation?

Or just get rid of "weekends off" altogether. a day is a day is a day...

Auto-pass. Yay. Keep shouting for it...

ah yes, my mistake. All games actually, not just BG.

Oh sure, show 4 of my losing games as an example...

How about fixing the bug in backgammon that allows only one die to be used when it is possible to use both. Perhaps that could be part of the Pro Backgammon release?

I don't know why he can't keep up, only playing 450 games concurrently. He was on the site today as well, so no crap about emergencies from anyone.

Could we please wee how much vacation someone has left on their profile? This would allow us to see when they are "really" going to time out.

Of course the devil has no effect on pawns since they can't see it.
I like this one best

I suggest try going to a higher resolution and increase the text size. You do that by clicking "view" then "text size" in the toolbar (in case you didn't know).

if you did that I'd bet 1 in the second round. :)

how about if you time out you get a random number?
:)

I don't think you shouldn't be a little less unclear.

I agree. I accidentally entered a non-rated tournament. The double negative is not obvious.

At least it should be
Rated: Yes/No.

But BBWs method is clearer still. :)

It seems to be popular to sign up twice and deliberately lose a bunch of games with one in order to pump up your rating. I suggest we delete all these users as we find them.

Here are 2 examples:
babareza = amirh
CurbYourEnthus = gamer07

Even if they are different people they are setting up the games. :)

I didn't say you were. But you used the word offensive so I assumed someone would be.

I hadn't realized there was a list. Do they include czech words? What are they?

9. December 2004, 17:07:18
grenv
And which words are offensive to you? How about Cojer?
Even words I wouldn't blink at (such as goddamn) are offensive to some.

How about just ignoring it instead of being offended? You only give other people power over you otherwise.

Playing for free as a pawn can serve that purpose. I was just trying to say that charity dollars could be better spent.
Having said that feel free to pay for whoever you want, more players is good.

8. December 2004, 01:16:42

If they can't afford the rather meagre amount to play here then perhaps we should be sending them food instead of game site memberships?

Of course feel free to debate that with vigour.

i think to take them out of a team that is signed up (is that what you meant) you would leave the tournament and resign up.

What is the effect of such a lapse mid tournament though?

5. November 2004, 20:41:33
grenv
That gets me thinking... what about a tournament with different games and you play each opponent once in each game?

3. November 2004, 21:42:10
grenv
The point is that the game would force the opening. I believe it is to eliminate the advantage (like pente). Therefore the rating would work out better as well.

I believe pro checkers is the same as regular checkers but with preset opening moves.

1. November 2004, 15:49:50

How about updating the S-B scores while the tournament is running. I know they are meaningless early, but as the tournament progresses it becomes interesting.

Subject: Re: points for gammon etc..
I agree. Points for gammons and backgammons is one thing, cube is quite another.

You should always get double points for a gammon and triple for a backgammon in a match, even when the cube is not used.

19. October 2004, 15:18:36

but you know anyway in some cases, so why make us track it in the notes? Once again I think marking the pieces is best if possible (same as notes but in a better place), though may not be easy to implement

Subject: Re: Espionage
If 4 attacks and loses then I could understand revealing the 5, saves time tracking it.

However if a 3 attacks and loses, the piece may be 4 or 5 so how would you know.

Ideally we would be able to "mark" the enemy pieces with what we know or suspect.

I'm not asking for anything you can't get from a scan of the board. If you capture a ?, you get a ? in the list of captured pieces.

grenv
I agree. List of all pieces captured (if unkown then ?). List of all your own pieces captured as well.
