 Chess variants (10x8)

Sam has closed his piano and gone to bed ... now we can talk about the real stuff of life ... love, liberty and games such as
Janus, Capablanca Random, Embassy Chess & the odd mention of other 10x8 variants is welcome too

For posting:
- invitations to games (you can also use the New Game menu or for particular games: Janus; Capablanca Random; or Embassy)
- information about upcoming tournaments
- disussion of games (please limit this to completed games or discussion on how a game has arrived at a certain position
... speculation on who has an advantage or the benefits of potential moves is not permitted while that particular game is in progress)
- links to interesting related sites (non-promotional)

WhisperzQ: I think not . . . Black was dominating the game after hxg. certainly avoiding the mate in two was necessary but the open file will be dominated by Black . . . controlling a rook file near the opponents king is usually winning.

Argomento: RULE TO BE ADDED
After experimenting with CRC for several months I detected that there could be some special positions, which might be too advantageous for white. They belong to a subclass of positions, where the pair of bishops is neighboured. Thus I as the author have decided to add the following selection rule: 'positions with neighboured bishops have to be avoided.' There 12118 positions still are remaining.

SMIRF Engine: An interesting conclusion. I would tend to agree, especially if the Bishops start out pointing at the opposing King.
This raises some questions though. How can you decide if the advantage is too great? Are we talking about a SMIRF position evaluation of more than 0.3 for example? What about other positions, like where the Cardinal is next to a Bishop?

Beren the 32nd: Well, the advantage exceeded 1/2 pawn unit, but still sank, when calculating longer and deeper. Normally the advantage should be around 1/4 pawn unit, which seems quite normal and acceptable.

Because it is too risky to move Queen or Archbishop that early cross the whole board, it seems to be sufficient to separate the bishops. Moreover there have been only few such extreme starting arrays, so the added rule hopefully should be sufficient to limit possible starting advantages. Now there still are 12118 different starting arrays.

Thus the current SMIRF download also gives now the modified SMIRF beta with engine 1.59.

Actually a nice conclusion especially for a game nearing the end of a 3-0 speed chess time control. Also surprisingly not too bad to follow in Descriptive notation, although 20...P-R5 probably should have been 20...P-R4. I am one of those players old enough to have first learned with that type of notation. Has Ed been keeping the record of games up to date? Again a nice assortment of games and a fascinating ending with the Janus and pawns against the two rooks with Ed Trice. The rest of the game had nice tactical turns and twists as well. Looks like you had a good chance to revenge the defeat in the other game when it was broken off.

Yes, I would agree, I have two Gothic sets now and use those interchangably whether I am analysing Gothic, Embassy, Janus or Grand Chess games. The collector in me thought it would be kind of cool to have an actual Janus chess set designed as such. I also have Grand Chess pieces, and although they are a nice smaller wood set, it is nice to have the larger pieces that Ed produces for analysis or actual play.

Though speed Gothic Chess is not something I've ever played, I doubt if I'd have much of a chance against either one of you.

Perhaps we can talk about 10 × 8 Chess variants? Are you new to playing them? I've only been playing them for about two years now. I told Ed a long time ago that someday good Chess players would learn these games and then it'd be a whole different deal. We have had lots of debate about the use of machines and programs too. It seems that regular Chess is just about mastered by them and these larger boards still give us players a chance. From what I've seen it will just be a matter of time before that's not true.

If it would be Bobby Fischer, he would be intelligent enough to hide any associations between that artificial person and himself. But here there are too many obvious 'evidences':

a) Jinky Ong locates himself at Island;
b) his pseudonym could directly be related to R.J.Fischer;
c) he is imitating parts of Fischer's behaviour and vocabulary;
d) he is declaring to be the GothicChess No. One, defeating 'weaky' Ed Trice.

If I had to decide, who would act like that - Fischer or Trice - I rather would chose Ed.

SMIRF Engine: You too are just speculating. It seems everyone has their own view of what they interpret of the "facts". After the deal with Bumble, I thought those of us that where around then would know better and not get it going again in a similiar situation. As it really makes little difference as to who each of us really are we might as well talk about 10 × 8 Chess variants or related subjects. The personalities themselves can be interesting, but I would rather not have this board used for advancing one's agenda unless it is for the Chess variants listed.

JinkyOng has posted on Ed's site about the games being made available for public viewing. Ed has responded that he will show them as given permission to do so. I wish Ed would have kept the graphics the same as they were on this site, but I'll get used to them if I want to follow the games as played over there. I suppose one of these days I'll get a 10 × 8 board and a Chess set for it and be able to actually look at them instead of the icons on the screen.

Walter,
I think MRC is an abbreviation for My (Fischer) Random Chess. Play could be arranged on something like ICC (Internet Chess Club) or any other main-line classical chess server that offers Random chess.

10-2 would be a fair time limit as Grandmasters will play even strong amateurs at 5-1 in classical chess with live pieces and a clock. Taking into account how good you are at mouse clicking as well as fun things like fighting bifocals, 10-2 may be more reasonable and equivalent way to give such odds on a computer.

I like speed chess and generally think I can play quicker with the real pieces, however even a reasonably respectable amateur like myself (I was a 2300 rated player) would go down to Fischer in practically every game if not every game even at these odds!
