Jim Dandy:   Santa Anita a recent "hot spot":

Two more horses broke down and were euthanized over the weekend at Santa Anita, bringing the number of fatalities from racing or training to seven since the meet's traditional Dec. 26 [2008] opening.

The issue has remained heated with the ongoing controversy over the introduction the last two years of mandated synthetic tracks at Santa Anita, Del Mar and Hollywood Park.

OSHAWA, Ont. - Animal protection workers are mourning the loss of at least 160 cats which perished early Wednesday in a fire east of Toronto. Firefighters, who were called to the Durham Humane Society in Oshawa, Ont., just after 2:30 a.m., arrived to find the building fully engulfed in flames. Emergency workers entered the building and rescued nine dogs, two cats and one rat, but scores of other animals succumbed to smoke inhalation, said Durham Region police.
"It's tragic that so many animals lost their lives so close to the holidays, where there was probably a good chance some of them would have found homes," said Ian McConachie, a spokesperson for the Toronto Humane Society. McConachie said the workers, volunteers and supporters of the Oshawa facility are very emotional and distraught following the loss.
"It's always sad to lose an animal, to lose almost 200 is just unthinkable," he said. Alison Cross, a spokesperson for the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, called the event "devastating." "Their life's work is towards animals and helping animals and unfortunately this tragic fire has destroyed that," she said. "They spend their lives taking care of these animals and something like this is really heartbreaking to see and hear." The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, which hasn't yet been determined, said police. The surviving animals were first taken for treatment at a Whitby, Ont., animal hospital and are now being housed at Oshawa Animal Services Clinic. Investigators are still tabulating the exact number of cats who died. The Ontario SPCA, which is affiliated with the Oshawa facility, will assist with cleaning up, removing and properly disposing of the dead cats' bodies. It will also help the branch become operational again. Cross said the society will be following up with the fire investigations team. "We definitely look to preventing this in the future, because animal protection is our number one priority and we never want to see anything like this again." In August 2006, the Ontario SPCA's Midland and District Branch was destroyed in a fire caused by a lightning strike. More than 30 animals were saved, while 29 perished. A subsequent fundraising campaign saw a new $1-million facility built as a result. Damage to the Oshawa building is estimated at $250,000. The Ontario SPCA is accepting financial donations at 1-888-ONT-SPCA ext. 323 or via www.humanedurham.com.

Tuesday: After having to give up puppies for years due to renting.. I decided years ago I wouldn't get another dog till I bought my own house.. and I always said it would be a golden retriever .. I was given Iggy on New Years Day in 2006.. I have had her in my life for 3 years.. and I am so glad someone opened my eyes up to the smaller breed dog.. (Not as messy, and doesn't tear up the back yard) She also misses me when I am gone and greets me when I first get home.. it's awesome..

Can hardly believe the news story I just heard on a Detroit news program.  A dog--obviously neglected by its owner--was reported being frozen to the sidewalk where it lived.  It's doing okay, and has been taken away by the local Humane Society.  (They got it loose with some warm water.)

Such reports appear in news stories such as this one from the Chicago Tribune: Reward up to $5,000 for dogfighting tips prompted by Englewood raid

Snoopy: lmao...a dog is a dog....people like these ones are the reason dogs are becoming unstable...they are not being allowed to just be what nature intended...DOGS.
People try to humanize them and that is one of the MOST unhealthy things you can do to it...if you truly love your dog,you will let it be what it is.

Tuesday: training is VERY therapeutic,lol...unfortunately,alot of people stop after a few times becuase they don't get INSTANT results.it takes alot of time, and alot of patience to train dogs. When YOU are less anxious, the dogs will be too..
I seriously mean it when I say..if I could live out on the trainging field with my dogs,I would...I ave taken a few clients on,free of charge because they trully needed help, didn't HAVE the money to pay,and I wanted the dogs to have a shot to be calm and happy...my most recent was 2 pitbuuls, man they were crazy the first time I met them..the male tried to bite me FOUR friggin times in the first 10 minutes of meeting them...OIY...after 7 weeks,he was one of my best buds!!! I miss those 2 dogs!! (they graduated btw!!) she has to work more social parts with them before they can move on to the more advanced training that I can do for her and the dogs...
Please just be consistant with them..I hear so much...I don;t have time..I ask people...do you sit and watch the commercials during a show...98% say yep,I sure do...then ya have time right there to do an excersise with your dogs :)

yeah..I mean, sometimes you HAVE to take the dogs before they are REALLY trained to behave...life happens,lol...but yes..ONLY do the first steps...your not going to go ANYWHERE...so,go get in your jammies and slippies and just start working the steps......
So many times when I show people how to go out the door first (yes, people REALLY have no clue how to do that...thats what they pay me for, lol) They will say, well then,I have to take the dog out for a walk/ride/etc..right?? and I say....nope,the dog never even has to leave the house.....
What the goal is here, hun,is to just get the use to SEEING you go through the motions of putting on your shoes and getting your keys in your hands and waking to the door...after you walk to the door...turn around, hang the keys up,take your shoes off,put your slippies back on and go make some hot cocoa or something....and please remember, after this, they will still be jumpy and whiny....do NOT tell them...ohhh,it's ok...or settle down...you say NOTHING to them,period....walk around like YOU are the Queen of your house...because you are ;)

Sujet: Re:
Tuesday: no,no,lol...I meant to start to desensitize them...you need to really do THOSE steps first...the shoes, the keys...that part needs to be done first....and nothing works the first time,LOL....I need YOU to be mentally preparred of having to do the shoes/keys things for ...oh,probably a good SOLID 3-5 days.....yes,I said DAYS before moving onto the next step
