 Chess variants (10x8)

Sam has closed his piano and gone to bed ... now we can talk about the real stuff of life ... love, liberty and games such as
Janus, Capablanca Random, Embassy Chess & the odd mention of other 10x8 variants is welcome too

For posting:
- invitations to games (you can also use the New Game menu or for particular games: Janus; Capablanca Random; or Embassy)
- information about upcoming tournaments
- disussion of games (please limit this to completed games or discussion on how a game has arrived at a certain position
... speculation on who has an advantage or the benefits of potential moves is not permitted while that particular game is in progress)
- links to interesting related sites (non-promotional)

Walter Montego: Thank you for the information;I hope it helps me;since Ed is so obstinate about his silly patent and is destroying a good game because of it. I have tried his live site and there are too many problems with his Java set-up.

Sujet: Re:
Pythagoras: My reason is Gothic introduced a balanced game along with th missing peice combination found in the Archbishop and Chancellor that 8x8 lacked by having only the Queen as a combination peice;thereby making a much faster game with greater Tactical and Stratigic possibilities. Be that as it may;I simily meant to point out that the feud that got Gothic Chess removed cost everyone that likes playing it. But it cost Ed Trice much more than he could gain by insisting on royalties;when availability of playing sites gets hurt. It makes you wonder whether he is more interested in profits than making Gothic Chess popular. If so he has defeated that purpose. I never meant to start a debate about the merits of Gothic Chess verses 8x8 Chess.

My last game of Gothic Chess on this site is listed as Embassey Chess;which is not Quite as a complete or exciting a game as Gothic Chess. Gothic Chess being the best Chess game ever invented. I realize the child-like feud that got Gothic Chess removed could have been avoided if Ed Trice had not been insistant on his Patent and ignored the higher principle of getting as much expossure for Gothic Chess as possible. He would have realized much greater sales of Gothic Chess material that way;even though he would have had to surrender enforcing his patent. As it now stands he has most likely religated Gothic Chess to forever becoming an also ran competitor of the more inferior 8x8 regular boring and drawish game 8x8 has become;due to overstudy and overplay.

BuilderQ: I do not intend to continue this arguement Alekine is dead and Fischer is still alive;so it is not the same thing. My opinion is my opinion;and you will not change it. Since Kasparov got his "so=called"championship from Karpov, who never won it over the board because he was never able to win it that way against Fischer;so the Communist that controlled FIDE moved illegally to strip Fischer of a championship that they knew they could not stop him from sucessfully defending against an inferior player. That is why I say Fischer is still CHAMPION. As for Alekine;no dead man ever has any claim to any current championship. This is all I will say on this topic. I never said Kasparov was not an excellant player;just that since he never defeated the real world champion;he has no right to claim the title, Maybe he could have;maybe he couldn't. Unfortunately we probably will never know;since Bobby is now past being able to play like the chess genuis he once was.

Check out this game between Colonel Crockett and myself. He says he lost because he made opening mistakes;I contend his mistake was in the Middle game. He also said that I did not beat him;but he beat himself. I say this is not totally true; that my moves were fairly good ones;this is a opening system I invented myself long before I ever heard of Brainking.com. I have had very good success with it.

Grim Reaper:In my case;I learned the concept of the windmill;and have had 4 or 5 instances where I have been able to set it up and win using this tactic. I am also quite sure other games I have won have been influenced by my experiences playing Gothic Chess. However,I still prefer Gothic to all other forms of chess; especially traditional drawish 8x8 chess. I also do not consider Gothic Chess to be a hybrid of Capablanca Chess;which I still think is to flawed. And I would like to thank Mr. Trice for such a totally magnificent invention as Gothic Chess;which I consider the greatest of all board games.

I would love to have it explained to me where to send the money to upgrade, the U.S. Dollar amount(not the totally unknown,to me,Euro)and where to send the dues using a U.S. money order. White=tedbarber (Unrated) Black=Spirou (1685) Dates of Game: 7 October 2003--23 October 2003. Game #215181 This was my first win on Brainking.com. Unfortunately,it was wiped out in November 2003 by a virus;as were my first 3 completed games and 17 other games in progress. I think it was 1 of the 5 best that I have played;and that it deserves to be remembered. I am not asking to re-instate or rate this game. I still have the printout of this game at home;as I printout and save all my games. I also presented this game with this exact same analysis on this same discussion board on 24 October 2003. Here it is: 1.)d4 e5?!(a dubious Opening for Black in Gothic Chess;since it leads to harrassment of his Chancellor by pieces of far less value;and also a lasting lead in developement by White.)2.d4xe5 Cxe5; 3.)Bf4 Cf5; 4.)Ah3!?(not the best developing square for the Archbishop;but in this case the move has the value of both protecting the Bishop at f4 and attacking the Chancellor with a weaker piece.)4.)....Ce7; 5.)g4 Nc6; 6.)Nc3 d5; 7.)Nxd5!?(He can not retake without losing Material.Ex.7.)....Cxd5;8.)Qxd5 Qxd5; 9.)Bxd5; or 7.)....Qxd5; 8.)Qxd5 Cxd5; 9.)Bxd5; in either case White is decisively in front in Material,Space, and Time.)7.)....Cd7; 8.)e4 Ne5; 9.)f3 c6; 10.)Bxe5!(Saves the Knight)10.)....Cxe5; 11.)Nf4 Qc7; 12.Af2 g5; 13.)Nd3 Ce8;(The Chancellor retreats to its original square. It will take no further part in the game.) 14.)Nh3 Bf6; 15.)Bg2 Qxh2?(accomplishes nothing; since he has no real follow-up;and puts his Queen in jeopardy.) 16.)i3 Qc7; 17.)Ce2 b6; 18.Ag3! (offers The Gothic Exchange;forcing him to either accept or Retreat. Accepting will give me a slight advantage.)18.)....Qd8; 19.0-0!(begins to sieze control of the Vital h-file.) 19.)....Nh6; 20.)e5 Bg7; 21.)Qe1 f6; 22.f4 Bxg4? (This only drives my Chancellor where I intended to move him anyway.)23.Cf2 Rc8; 24.)f4xg5!(The pin keeps him from retaking,yet.)24.)....Nf5; 25.)Ae4 Bxh3? (surrenders the h-file to me.) 26.)Cxh3 f6xg5; 27.)Axf5 Af6??(Allows a mating net.) 28.)Cxh7+ Resigns. Sujet: Game 1 my Match with dokesa
This game is fairly even until move 18;when I sacrificed a Knight for 2 Pawns to relieve pressure on my Kingside. Ratings are those at the time of the game. Game:396028 Match:17050. My rating was 1592 dokesa's was 1936. I am White. 1.)Nh3 d6, 2.)i3 e5, 3.)Bi2 h6, 4.)f3 Ah7, 5.)Af2 g5, 6.)0-0 Nc6,(completes my first objective of Castling quickly by using a Gothic King's Indian set-up. Now I plan to bring pressure against his Centre to create a weakness.) 7.)Nc3 b6, 8.)d3 Bb7, 9.)e4 Bf6, 10.)g4 Cg7, 11.)Be3 Nj6,(I have some Queenside pressure verses dokesa's Kingside set-up;but there are no noticeable weaknesses so far as I can see so far.)12.)Nd5 Ne7, 13.)Nxf6 Axf6, 14.)Nj4 i5, 15.)Nh3 Qd7, 16.)d4 0-0-0?!(Seems to a strategic error;because of my Queenside pressure appears too great. Unfortunately,I can not take immediate advantaage.)17.)d5 Ba6, 18.Nxi5!?(disrupts his Kingside Pawn Formation; thus relieving some of the pressure on that side. I believe this justifies the sacrifice.) 18.)....h6xi5, 19.)Axi5 Ci6,(Now I must submit to a temporary, but fairly weak Counter Attack.) 20.)Aj4 Ci8, 21.)h4 Nh7, 22.)h5 j5, 23.b3 Rj7, 24.c4!(preparing to bring my Chancellor to the b-file via d3.)24.)....Ri7, 25.)Cd3 Ri4, 26.Ah3 Ni5? (forces my Archbishop to its best square for defense. His attack is fizzling;since he must weaken his Queenside to make it work. He does not have the Time.) 27.)Ag7! Nh7, (Now it is my turn.) 28.Cb4 Bb7, 29.)Qd2 Ah8, 30.)a4 Rf8?? (Severely weakens his Queenside; my next 2 moves will seal his fate.) 31.)Cb5 (threatens Cxa7+; thus forcing his response.)31.)....Kb8, 32.a5! Ba6!? (Delays my attack for only 1 move.) 33.)Cb4 Qc8, 34.)a5xb6! (He looses a piece if he retakes;and simplifies my task. So he must Retreat)34.)....Bb7, 35.Rxa7!!(deprives his King of its escape square at a8;and assures my Mate.) 35.)....c6??(no worse move exists;although I can not find anything much better.) 36.)d5xc6 Nxc6, (Now it is mate in 2.) 37.Qxd6+ Qc7, 38.)Qxc7# This was my first of 4 wins against 1900+ players.(2 others against dokesa and 1 against facepan.) I have a draw against Hercules Beast,a 2000+ player. These are brainking ratings. This match is a 4 win match;currently tied at 3 wins each. I do believe dokesa will win this match.

I still think that all games in a match should be rated. If this occurred my actual won lost draws would be 58 wins 39 losses and 4 draws;and my rating would be much higher since 6 of my wins that will never be counted or rated are against players rated from 90-300 rating points above me as opposed to only 2 losses against these same opponants;1 loss against the 90 point leader and 1 against the 300 point leader. Against the 300 point leader;I am leadining 3 games to 1. This is why I think all games, even match games should be rated. I would fell the same even if I had lost all these games;since I think ALL GAMES should be rated.

Sujet: Re: last games
You just need to be careful and in each case moving the pawns or more rightly The knights to h3 or c3 for White and h6 or c6 for Black usually will eliminate this bad play from happening. But even in regular chess bad mooves can lead to very Quick mates;or lost games. However in Gothic you can sometimes overcome these moves because of the extra pieces. Whereas in regular chess recovery is next to impossible.
