is it possible to get a gammon (2 points) or backgammon (3 points) in a game of anti-backgammon ?

the 2 top players of hyper gammon though ... that might be something different .. but even about that i am not too sure :)

playBunny: ok :)

hmm .. i mean the 7 point which is closest to my opponents base ... so i move my backmen there .. are you talking about that as well ?

i mainly do it because i would have my opponent to have a 3 wide block when he rolls 6+1

somehow i like to grab the 18 spot from my opponent (which he can secure when he rolls 6+1) .. i wonder if this is good practice though ?

11 hours is nasty .. it seems a lot but its less than half a day so most of it can be used while you are asleep

what about this player
he is ranked #1 in the ratio statistics page but his last 10 games all finished in a timeout (in his favor :))
his checkers rating seems to be ok though as he played a lot of games in there :)

Sujet: Re: Game group ratings
alanback: you mean a combined rating would calculate all games in all subtypes as 1 total rating ? so when i play a game of nackgammon it would calculate into my nackgammon rating and also into my average combined gammon rating ? if i play a game of hyper gammon it would calculate into my hyper rating .. and also into my combined rating ?

that would be a better 'average' indeed :)

the list posted below could show something different as well if calculated as a combined rating .. we mere mortals cant that though .. the formula would have to be run through the whole data set as it was done with the last change in the rating formula .. that means quite some more work than just an averaging .. but would be much more accurate :)

Sujet: Re: Game group ratings
WhiteTower: in the past we had separate boards for each backgammon type (for every gane type) .... when a user posted a message the rating of that user was shown next to his/her name ... this could be used as an indication of the knowledge (although the rating doesnt have to 100% accurate)

when the boards were combined to have 1 board per main game type i suggested to show the average rating for the all the game types for which the board was dedicated ... i think fencer wasnt against it .. but appearently neither strongly favored it (as it isnt there yet ;))

i would love such a average rating per main game type

but what would you do with the average rating of players who dont play all subtypes ? like playbunny who only plays normal and hyper backgammon

alanback: i have a bit more problems with nackgammon than with backgammon ... i also tend to have more problems with crowded backgammon than with race backgammon .. but i agree they are somewhat similar.

i do like the average rating over all games of this site (as long as you have more than 11 established ratings) which you can see on the statistics page. its an indication of someones general game knowledge (although it doesnt mean much when someone concentrates on just a few game types .. like me .. i wouldnt want to add many chesslike games to established average :))

i would be very curious to the same list for all 5 positive gammon types

as well as the same list for all 6 gammon types :)

aberann: ah ok! sorry .. i didnt look far enough in the past (only checked out your last 10 games)

your opponent had a much lower bkr than you did thats why you didnt win any ful bkr points (maybe you won a few tenths of a point though, not sure, but it wouldnt be much

aberann: i dont see any game in which your opponent timed out ?

you can get no bkr change

  • when your opponent has a much lower bkr than you do
  • when its an unrated game
  • when the game times out before 2 moves are made

Sujet: Re: Men behind
WhiteTower: depends on the distribution of your opponent .. if he has holes in his home then he is likely to have some moves in which he cant bear off .. so you might still have a chance

it also depends if you have a nice block in your own home, if you dont have that .. then dont leave both pieces there

it also depends if its a cube game or not .. with a cube game you might want to make sure you wont be (back)gammoned

it also depends on the match score .. when you are far behind you might want to take some more risks .. although i am not sure about that one

i most often move only 1 piece out and leave the other there to be caught by my opponent

is it still possible to (back)gammon someone when (s)he moved some pieces out of the board before already, and was sent back by the opponent, who then finished the game (maybe even with the player on the bar)

playBunny: luck on top, strategy at the bottom

  • Hyper Backgammon
  • Backgammon
  • Nackgammon
  • Crowded Backgammon
  • Race Backgammon

although the last 2 might be equal .. not sure about those

Sujet: luck vs number of pieces
statement : the more pieces in a game of backgammon, the less influence luck will have

of course hypergammon takes this to its extremes, but does this also count for crowded backgammon and race backgammon vs normal backgammon and nackgammon ?

any opinions ? :)

i have 2 questions about the cube games :

  • whats the max to which you can double ? (64 or no limit?)
  • what happens if i resign a game (3-0 behind in a 5 pnt match, both already bearing off) will the resign button make me resign the game (making it 4-0) or does it make me resign the complete match ?

its not only important in gambling, but also in simulations (heart simulators would die for a perfect random generator .. sorry for the bad pun :))

i heard that slot machines pay out when their money tubes are getting too full .. just to work around a physical limitation .. but i am not sure if thats true .. and i cant speak of personal experience :)
