Ask questions or just talk about different languages. Since BrainKing is an international game site supporting many languages, this board can be kind of useful.

Since we will be dealing with pronunciation of words rather than their spelling, I think it's useful to have a link to The sounds of English and the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Is there any difference between a movie's being set in China and it's taking place in China?

If it had said the 'movie set' is in china
then it would have a different meaning..

but being set in means the same as taking place in china

The story is set in or taking place in China

Pedro, the way you would have said it doesn't sound quite right. BUT it is how I talk, unfortunately, my English has gotten quite laxidazical. (Love that word!)

2. tsekkur ettım

I feel absolutely lost in a game with a player here. All I can say in reply to them is "Bol şans."

To me 'custom' is a very obsurb word. It has a few different meanings in the English language

1. practice followed by people of a particular group or region.
2. Duties or taxes imposed on imported and, less commonly, exported goods.
3.Made to order.

Then if you make the word 'customer'
a person or business that purchases a commodity or service

English is a very difficult language to master I would think.

All global moderators can watch the board, I assume. It isn't so busy and at least one of us is online most of the hours of the day.

Walter Montego: Honour is UK/Canadian spelling - Honor is American

neighbor US / Neighbour UK/Canada (Common Wealth is likely the best way to say it)
flavor
harbor
color
etc

all the '-our' endings are Common Wealth

Same as some z words.. realize/realise etc US/Common Wealth

With congratulations... I saw a banner at a wedding one time that read "congradulations on your wedding". I was floored. I couldn't believe that mistake got by the printers. Does it mean that maybe folks are so lax in their English that many, many don't know the proper words/spelling etc?

Sujet: Re: Pet peeves.....
رضا: Yes, I realize that part. I think a lot of it is lack of written use in every day life. Most folks don't normally write or type very much except at sites like this. Maybe showing them the difference will help them to learn the difference. Just a thought.

I am by no means a scholar or the best at grammar in the English language but I can't get over how many people make these common mistakes!

It is You're welcome, not your welcome!
It is congrats or congratulations, not congrads!
I can hear you, not here you!
It is their car, not there car!
they're going away, not there going away!

...this concludes my rant.
