Jsou dvě teorie na to, co zkratky znamenají. První praví, že BJ byl pojmenován podle křestních jmen svých rodičů, ta jsou Bea a Jay. Larry Gelbart ovšem řekl, že postava byla pojmenována po Williamu (tedy Billu) Jurgensonovi (kameramanovi).
