Subject: IE7 & Firefox 2.0
Well both new browsers are released.

I first used IE7, and I like the tabs & the tab preview page where you can see all the open tabs. But I hated that IE7 put other icons in the same row as the tabs, leaving less room for visible tabs - with a lot of "empty" above it, with no real way to move things around and make 2 rows of stuff, instead of 3 - to make more room for the page. So like the addition of tabs, but the setup bugs me.

Firefox 2 - I'm using it now, and cool - it has a spell check as I write, and it looks like I misspelled "visable" above - so I will correct it now by right clicking and choosing the correct one. Firefox allows me to move the menu & buttons all around - allowing me to have the menu, then next to that the "search" menu - under that the back, reload buttons - and then a longer address bar. I love how much control it has.

BUT NO! Firefox has messed up the tabs (well at least for me). First the [X] to close the tab is now on each tab, instead of just 1 [X] to the right to close the open tab. I liked it before since it allowed more room on the tab to display the title.

BUT NO (part 2) Firefox has messed up the tabs by now not allowing a lot (about 20-25) to be shown, and now after about 15 open tabs, it starts to "scroll" them so you can see all the open tabs at the same time. I normally have between 12-15 open tabs at a time. But now when I open more, UGH - Just don't like it.

But with Firefox, hopefully there will be an add-on that will make the tabs look like Firefox 1.5x

OK, those are my opinions of the new browsers. Just thought I would share.

Hi, I just installed Opera and every time I move my mouse over the gameboard, an annoying little tag appears telling the address of where the mouse is pointing... anyone know how I can fix that?
I just noticed it's not just over the board games, it happens anytime the mouse goes over a clickable space.......

I'm using Firefox.  When I view a picture an dthen choose for it to be saved on my hard drive, it follows all the necessary process but doesn't actually download anything when I go and check my hard drive!  It doesn't give any errors or anything.  Can someone tell me what's going on?

King Reza: I guess i have nothing to lose, if i cant get it working. I may lose all the music files on there i guess. The one weird thing is when i had 98 on here and was going to go over to XP, i stored all my stuff on there (my briefcase & documents ets...) it worked fine then. Oh well, i will try and put XP on there tomorrow.

I know its weird. Like i said i have used this other hard disk before when i was using 98 2nd edition, then when it was about half full it starting playing up, telling me it wasnt there and re-configure the disk as its doing now. The system was quite old, but it run great apart from that so i just took that disk out. Now i have XP i thought i would try it again, but nothing. It has to be the disk i guess.

MadMonkey:Why don't you try plugging in the Hard disk while your system is on?

8. October 2006, 19:49:33

Well, i turned off, plugged the new drive in, made sure it was jumped to slave. PC booted up and first thing it did was re-configure the disks. It said:

Disk 3: CD-ROM Disk 4: CD-ROM

So it had lost Disk 1: MAIN C Disk, that was fine before i turned PC off and had not picked up the New Disk.
I checked in BIOS, but obviously it could not tell me anything because according to it there were only 2 Disk drives on the system.
So i switched off, unplugged the New Disk and it re-configured back to:

Disk 1: Main Disk Disk 3: CD-ROM Disk 4: CD-ROM

so all was fine again. I have tried it a couple more times, taking the IDE cable out, repluging the hard disks in a different order, checking the jumpers, but no good. I still cant see what the Bios is up to as everytime i plug the new drive in, it loses that and the main drive.

hcr-1990: No, same IDE cable tha came with the PC. One end in Mother board, middle connection Main(C) drive and other end to the new Drive. Like i say it worked before, and sometimes if i am lucky it does now. Seems to be how its feeling. Weird eh

King Reza: I will check that now, as i am having something to eat, give me a reason to log off. I can get into Set-up fine, thats F10 on this Compaq.

Thanks for the help, lets have a look.

MadMonkey:When you reboot your system, after it starts press Delete and check if your motherboard knows your Hard drives as well.  Jumpers alone won't work.  I could tell you where exactly to look, but it's different on different moterboard systems.  Press delete and check everywhere and you'll find it.  It says that your primary slave is a hard disk an dsecondary slave should also be the other hard disk.

MadMonkey: Have you changed the IDE cable since you took the 20GB hard drive out?

6. October 2006, 16:40:56
MadMonkey
And todays problem is....
I have have a semi-new 20GB hard drive that used to be in my PC, but i took it out ages ago. It was only used for storage. Several times this week i have tried to put it back in, but if i do when i boot up and the system re-configures all the drives to except it, it does the opposite. It not only ignores it but also ignores my Main C drive and tells me i only have 2 drive a CD and a DVD, so no hard drives at all & no operating system lol.
If i unplug it and reboot, there is my old C drive and all is ok. So what is the matter with this drive ? Why is it doing this ? The Jumpers are set Master(C) and Slave(new disk) as they were when it used to be in my system.
Its a puzzle....

Is the computer Windows XP?

I don't know.... just seems very strange - I rarely see a mouse that breaks, let alone 3 of them.... the only thing I can think of is a PC problem, but I'm not sure what it would be.

When it freezes up, after you reboot your computer do they work again for awhile or broke right away?

So hearing that you went through 3 of them, my guess there is something wrong with the PC side of it and not the mouse side of it. I'm not sure what the problem would be....

So when you say "just stop" - does that mean it does not move the pointer anymore on the screen? Or is it just very "buggy" when it moves?

Jason, BBW, Baked Alaskan: Thanks for the tips and help. I've fixed the registry problems (through Registry Doctor), and it was a mess.. but still the screen freezes so that was not the problem. I'm login to the internet through a putty-tunneling-connection, I am thinking that may be the case (but otherwise, my LAN seemed to be down ever so often and have been lazy to set it back - i guess I'll have to give that a try also!).

Registry Mechanic, small programm that fixes some problems and asks for registration to fix the remaining ones. Good thing is that it identifies the exact location, so that you can fix them manually later on. For anybody interested in such things! :-)

Happy 50th Birthday Hard Drives!

1956: IBM ships the first hard drive, the RAMAC 305, which holds 5MB of data at $10,000 a megabyte. It is as big as two refrigerators and uses 50 24-inch platters.

And today, I have over a terabyte of storage on my main computer (not counting other computers in the house) - and I could use more!
