joshi tm: Then surely you deserve to lose? I was under the impression that ending a Go game by passing and marking dead stones was just a way to finish it quicker if it is obvious one person has won.
If you would lose by continuing on then you have lost the game fairly and should accept that, rather than trying to cheat your opponent out of a win by passing and hoping they make a mistake in your favour while marking the stones.

A) He shouldn't have to
B) It reduces his score, which is not something that he wants to do. In this particular case, if he captured the 4 dead stones at J8, G10, F10, & A12 and faith passed on all 4 turns, then he would actually lose.

I think some BK staff should be also a Go-Judge, a player who can ''judge'' the mark dead stone procedure. In this game Go 13x13 (joshi tm - faith) I'm having trouble because my opponent refuses to mark her stones as dead.

Onderwerp: Re: Game rules
El Cid: The problem is the rules are whole texts. It's hard work to write the same stuff over and over again for the over a dozen chess variations (I know there's copy paste but you still have to go in and find the differences to change). And then, if someone says "Oh look, you made a mistake there" you must go through all the texts to see if the mistake is in the others or not.

A suggestion for Fencer - why not have the rules broken down in small bits that can be used to compose the actual rules page. For chess, for instance, you could have a text saying how the pawns move, let's call this text 1. Text 2 saying how the king moves etc. Then, text 30 says how the game is won after 3 checks. Then text 31 that the game starts with random positions.
Rules for 3 Checks Chess would be composed of 1+2+...+30;
Rules for Capablanca Chess would be composed of 1+2+...+31.

Of course, I know this is easier said than done. But in the long run, it could also make the complete rules easier to maintain and translations easier to do (it takes lots of motivation to go and translate big texts like the present rules).

And in an ideal way, you could even link this texts to bits of code in the game engines and so the rules would come out automatically :) (yes, I know, I'm daydreaming now)

El Cid  I also agree with you!   There are many games I have never played let alone heard of before and it is frustrating to try to read the rules only to be told it is a variation and when you go to the original, it doesn't always help either.  I guess you need to play the originals first but you don't figure that out until you have already joined a game that you have no idea about anyway!  :-((

Could it be possible to create an option that allowed whoever wanted it, to see the complete rules of each game, instead of seeing only the differences between that and the reference one?
For example, if a player wants to learn to play espionage, and decides to start by small espionage, he has to go and check the rules several times (mainly to know which pieces can defeat which), but, since he's playing small espionage, he goes to the rules page, and has to make antoher (frustrating if many repeated) click, to go to the "normal" espionage rules page

Onderwerp: team match player checklists
this may be kind of an obscure function, but it would be very handy when it was needed:

a team of mine has just been invited to a match. our team has more than the four players needed to play, so i've sent out a message to the team members asking who'd like to take part. i'm thinking that it would be very nice if, as i got positive responses back from team members, i could go to the match invitation page, check the checkboxes next to those players' names to indicate that they want to play, and then save that checked status without having to start the match. that would allow me to see how many people want to play and how many more players we need before we can start, right on the match invitation page, without having to keep an external list somewhere else, and then when we have our four players i'll already be there and can simply accept the invitation to start the match.

i'm envisioning this manifesting itself as a simple "save" or "save player status" button below the player list on the match invitation page.

thanks, Filip!

Onderwerp: Re: heY fencer!!! - I have a really great unique idea for a word game for those who like word games...
nobleheart: um...minus your suggested variation, this game is called Scrabble. you really have never seen it?? it's been an extremely popular and well-known board game for many decades. and Fencer would have to be careful how he implemented it - no references to Scrabble anywhere - because i know of one excellent website dedicated to this game that was shut down through legal action by Hasbro on grounds of copyright infringement.

it appears it can be done legally though. http://www.bugcafe.net/ offers the game and hasn't been taken down...at least not yet...

i was just thinking the other day if it would be possible to send a message to 'everyone on friends list' as when i have some news to share with my friends it would be much easier to be able to send it to everyone on my frineds list rather that copying and pasting it loads of times - or even if you could have tick boxes next to your friends names and select which ones you wanted to send the message to. Is this possible??

In the Discussion Boards page, right now boards are sorted according to their creation date.
I think they should be sorted alphabetically, because that way, all Brainking boards from the different languages would show up together, and it might be easier to look for one particular board as well.

Also a new category might come in handy to allow the BrainKing/Game boards (Feature requests, Brainkings, GC, etc) show up appart from the "off-topic" boards (like gardening, automotive, etc.). (By off-topic, I mean that their subject has no relation to a game site, not that their best or worse than the others)

Just a thought...

Thad: people with lots of games always play the games with the least amount of time left , so they will most likely always get to a game when it runs down on time , the lower limit ones always jumpback in front of the longer games .

Onderwerp: date started on main page
We need the date that a game was started and the ability to sort by it on our main game page. Too many users are holding up tournament games. These players often have hundreds of games going and some do a good job of keeping the games moving, but if you are playing in a 7-day/move tournament, you can pretty much count on certain players taking 6 days and 12 hours between moves every time. If these players had the ability to sort their games by start date, perhaps they'd see that they got one game going that's holding up a tournament that was started more than six months ago and they'd move more frequently in these old games.
