 Languages

Ask questions or just talk about different languages. Since BrainKing is an international game site supporting many languages, this board can be kind of useful.

Since we will be dealing with pronunciation of words rather than their spelling, I think it's useful to have a link to The sounds of English and the International Phonetic Alphabet.

To see translations of some frequently used phrases and sentences in other languages see Languages

Artful Dodger: No, I never trust google translate. Unless it's something I was pretty sure about anyway. I just felt it was funny how it was saying the opposite, and the placements of the "not" part of the translation, which changed the meaning to the opposite.
I find odd things funny

Artful Dodger: Not that Google Translate can be trusted, but it suggests the opposite.

"Thanks, Dan. I'm not certain that you speak so well Deutch"

King Reza: Personally, I agree with you, in the post where you expanded upon your question. To me, each time, #1 is the only one that sounds correct to me.

King Reza: I personally would have said "I ran very fast after I saw the huge dog", but I imagine technically your sentence is fine.

Honestly though, I forget all those rules I learned in Junior High English with diagramming sentences. I know some were pretty strict.

King Reza: Like so much else in English, it can be used different ways. My personal opinion is that both are the same, in your original post. If someone said the movie takes place in NYC but the set is in LA, it would be saying that the story itself is set(verb)in NYC, but the movie set(noun) is in LA.

Bluefin: I googled it and come up with "Final" in Czech.. But that doesn't mean it's correct. LOL

Pedro Martínez: Good point. I have used it with languages that I have a little bit of a knowledge of. (Spanish, French), and those are probably the times when it has been good enough to get a general idea.

Czech seems like it would be a pretty difficult language to learn. (From an English perspective anyways). I could be totally off on that of course, but it's the impression I have.

Pedro Martínez: True. For some languages, they seem to work better though. I can usually get a decent idea of what someone is saying from them. For some reason with Czech though, I tend to not have much luck.

Fencer: Thank you. Do you (or anyone?) know of a decent czech to english, english to czech translator website? I've tried a couple different ones, and they never are very helpful.

I went to a czech to english translator for this, but it was useless. LOL. It only translated one word.

tak tohle hrát neumím, hraji to prvně

The person typed it in a game, and I responded that I was sorry, but I didn't understand, and they responded with the eye rolling smiley, lol.

P-G: If you use Firefox, there is a neat add on called Hyperwords that has a decent translator. I use it quite often. It doesn't have every language, but it is very convenient. I simply highlight the text I want translated and a menu pops up, and I choose "translate" and it changes the highlighted text to the language I requested, right on the page. (No need to go to another website) It is certainly not perfect, but I, personally, am very happy with it.

You need to be using Firefox as your browser, however.

Thank you.

yoyudax: Using the translation part of Hyperwords in a Firefox add on, it looks like they are saying it's your turn. At least if it's Dutch, it looks like thats what theyre saying. You didn't say what language it was. (Actually what Hyperwords says it is, is: "you are at the turn")

If you use Firefox, I highly recommend adding the Hyperwords add on. You can highlight what you want translated and it does it for you right there on the screen. No need to go to any translation sites.
