 Feature requests

Do you miss something on BrainKing.com and would you like to see it here? Post your request into this board!
If there is a more specific board for the request, (i.e. game rule changes etc) then it should be posted and discussed on that specific board.

For further information about Feature Requests, please visit this link on the Brainking.Info site : http://brainking.info/archives/20-About-feature-requests.html

Before all that, perhaps we could just get the time to be correct! I live where daylight saving time is not celebrated. BrainKing's clock is wrong all summer long!!!

mctrivia: I could have done it, but I thought as a courtesy, I'd ask him to delete them himself. It's always best to let someone try and correct their own mistakes rather than be dictorial (is that the right word?) and do it.

Argomento: a solution
My feature request is for pawns to be able to delete their posts and a way to reach members who place a moderator on their blocked users list so that i do not look like an idiot again.

A BrainKing member made a post stating that another player was a cheat. The other player responded. When I became aware of it, I hid them both temporarily and sent them each a private message asking them to delete their messages. The second player kindly did and I have unhidden him. The first plyaer sent me the following reply:

Are all moderators stupid?
Pawns - Cannot - Delete - Messages.

He also added me to his blocked users list so I cannot contact him again.

Folks, I have been a paying member for a long time. How am I supposed to remember details about other membership levels like that? And now I look like an idiot! So my feature request is a change to BrainKing so that pawns can delete their own posts and a way to reach members who make posts that need to be moderated, even if they have that moderator on their blocked users list.

Good Day.

Nasmichael: The only problem with that (well, maybe notthe olny one, but something that occurred to me) is how do you let players know that there are new messages? Do you add these tournament boards to a player's favorite? What if a player doesn't want that done? Asside from programming for that issue, it seems like a great idea!

Luke Skywalker: I would like to see practice boards. I think we are talking about very similar ideas. I'd like to have a link on every game page that would take me to a practice board with the current position set. Then I could move both sides ahead and back a few moves. I could do this now on a real board (if I had one), so there is really no strategical change to the game by providing practice boards, but it would make investigating key moves much easier, and therefore fun. And isn't fun what this site is really all about? ;-)

Argomento: Re: suggestion
Nothingness: Pente has the same problem. Player 1 has an advantage. It's not a big deal between average players, but with two masters, P1 ill almost always win. I usually post two-game matches when I post new games. This negates the edge. I end up with a lot of splits, and I only earn (lose) BKR points for one win (loss), when I win (lose) both but that doesn't bother me. You could do the same with the games you mention.

WizardII: Well, we could start out small. Perhaps a system to keep track of people's feature requests. That way, Fencer could easily see what new features players really want. We wouldn't need any of his existing code. He could absorb it if he ever wanted to. Seems like a good first step. We/he could always add more if it works well.

I was thinking along those lines. ;-)

Argomento: Re: Tournament play
furbster: Yes, that was obviously incorrect. Was I typing too late at night? ;-)

Here is a good example of why additional rounds should be played:
http://brainking.com/game/Tournaments?tri=25594

I hate the idea of having two tournament winners listed. If we are both winners, then we should be listed as co-winners. Which means Fencer would have to create a new category, Tournament Co-Wins, and check each player's tourney wins to see which are actually co-wins. Obviously not worth it.

In the tournament above, why not at least have a third round with just me and the opponent I tied with in the previous round? I can understand how some players would prefer not to play a fourth round, if the third should also be a tie, but as long as the next round is not a repeat of the previous, I see no reason why the round should not continue.

Of course, if you allow both players to advance from this round, I think you must do it in early rounds also for the sake of fairness.

As others have said better than I, we should only use tiebreakers when there is a specific reason, before a deadline or something like that. None of wich we really have here at BrainKing.

eagle eye: Actually, it's worse than that. If there are more than two people in the final round (any round with only one section), then, if there is a tie for that section, there are two tournament winners, even though those two players never faced each other!

kleineme: When I used to play at MissYourTurn.com, I had several tournaments get down to just me and another player. Sometimes it would take us more than four rounds to determine a winner. Whether I won or lost, those were great finishes and the way they should be played!

Argomento: Moves listed bottom to top
I would like to see the moves list sorted from bottom to top. I think it should be an optional setting so that players who prefer it the way it is now can keep it as is.

In longer games, I find that I keep having to scroll to the bottom of the page to study what my opponent did the last few turns, then page back up to the top to study the board, then to the bottom again if I want another look. In long games (I've played Espionage past 100 moves more than once), this can be a pain. If the moves list were sorted with the most recent move on top, this could be avoided and would make at least one player very happy. ;-)

Thanks,
Thad

That reminds me of something else I'd really like to see as a feature. When I complete a game and start a new one from the button in the message, it would be great if the settings of the old one were already set up for the next one. In addition, I would really, really like to be able to change the default settings for an invite. I like to play 4 day games, but the default is seven. I send out invites for Pente mostly, but the default is chess, etc.

I have used the delete button to end some Espionage games. I prefer to play Fast Espionage, but sometimes I don't catch the difference right away. Delete is good for situations like that. Or if you notice that a game you've accepted is rated and you wanted it unrated, etc. Also, I've used it on a rematch against someone when I failed to set un the rematch with the right colors.

Modificato da Thad (18. Gennaio 2005, 19:47:22)
Summertop: This would require removing the "Subjext" and "Message" text boxes that currently appear on each DB page and replacing them with a "New Topic" link. Many people just 'reply' to a post by filling in the message box that they now see. The problem with doing that is that they aren't really replying to any particular message (at least not as far as the system knows).

This is a feature that I would like to see corrected. I have never mentioned it before, because I know there are many users who are either unaware of how to proprtly reply so that a subject apprears in their reply (which would make threads easier to read) or simply too lazy to do it properly. Removing the "Subject" & "Message" textboxes would force replying users to click on the reply button in the message they want to reply to (or click on the "New Topic" link). Hopefully, this would result in fewer blank subjects in posts.

Another feature that would hlep would be to force a subject to be entered.

Also, eliminating the ability to change a subject when replying might hlep too, but I'm not sure if that is a good idea or not.

It's probably a difficult thing to program and happens infrequently enough that it's not worth programming (at least not at the expense of other requested features), but it still is a problem that deserves to be addressed somehow.
