Here is a link to the only game you have running -- you may need to cut and paste this into your browser

Argomento: Re: People who resign
tfra11:I would say also that there is a difference between quitting and acknowledging the inevitable.  In backgammon in particular, I will resign only when I have no mathematical possibility of winning.  To resign earlier would be quitting.

I would go so far as to say that in other games, such as chess, you should resign a clearly lost position because to play on implies you don't think your opponent has the ability to play out the clear win.  Of course, the question whether a game is "clearly lost" requires some realistic evaluation of the opponent's ability.

Argomento: Re: People who resign
tfra11:It is good manners to resign a hopelessly lost game.  You've done all you can do to win at that point, and the rest of the game is just meaningless dice rolls.  There are many people who are annoyed at players who drag lost games out just for the sake of postponing the loss.

Argomento: Byes
There is never a need or a justification for byes after the first round in a single elimination tournament.  It's easy to calculate the number of byes.  If there are N players and X is the next power of 2 higher than N, there should be (X-N) byes.  Of course, if N is a power of 2, there should be no byes.

Argomento: U.S. Deals Blow to Online-Poker Players

In an apparent crackdown on Internet gambling, federal authorities
in New York have frozen or seized bank accounts worth $34 million
belonging to 27,000 online poker players, according to representatives
for the players and account holders.

In an operation that began last week, the office of the U.S.
Attorney for the Southern District of New York froze or issued seizure
orders for bank accounts in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Arizona held
at Wells Fargo, Citibank, Goldwater Bank and Alliance Bank of Arizona.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office had no comment.

Argomento: Re:
Bernice:Because the real problem is not the "crap", but your reaction to it.  If you can control your reaction, you don't have to worry about controlling events outside yourself.  The easiest way to avoid being bothered by other people's behavior is to realize that it's not about you, but about them.

And to point out another anomaly resulting from trying to fit the backgammon peg into the chess hole ... consider this display of the score in a tournament final round:

Top 50 Backgammon Race (Invitational)

What would you guess is the score of this 11 point final match?

If you guessed 4-3, you are wrong ... the score is 8-4.
