tarcellius: been meaning to come back here and see what happened, and I see Jozso ruled it. Nice going Jozso, I went over some of your games and liked how you solidly kept the pressure on in all your games......well played!. MY thanks to everyone who entered this tourney, you all played well and I know it was tough especially with the random game start with only one game in the set. The next King of the Hill will be at some point down the road, rest assured I'm going to have it created with a "SET" for both players. This was fun, I liked the change up. -Brf

And that was fun, much thanks to Brf for a new kind of tournament.

Thad - Thoughts

I have essentially completed all my games. I don't think having only one game of each color was such a big deal. With so many games, it kinda evened out overall. Does anyone else feel that way? Or is it important to play each player from both sides of the board?

I believe that whether you are P1 or P2 is balanced over all the games. I was P1 against every player seated in an odd position and P2 against all the even seated players. Overall, that should just about even things out.

I'd like to hear other player's thoughts.

Could we make this a monthly event? Start it on the first?

Perhaps, Brf, you could shorten the bonus time to 16 or 20 hours. With a 1-day bonus and in a game where both players are moving slowly, each player only has to move every other day. In a 15+ move game, that's more than a month to completion, which seems a little long.

tarcellius: yeah I'm with you, too much a pain in the ass to get everyone on board for that. If someone wants to challenge another player to the other game in the set I'll leave that to them but it won't factor into this tournament.

Redfrog, As far as P1's second stone nullfying P1's advantage...yeah that's got the potential to start a huge debate. for the most part it does do just that but once you've been playing for awhile you start to learn ways around some of those limitations and some P1 second moves are definitely better than others. I prefer moving as P2 in a set but that's just me.

Brf: Believe me - i know it can be tricky to set up the tournaments here - I've screwed up plenty. As a matter of fact - I feel I should apologize for not catching the set up and warning you ahead of time... I normally pay more attention to those details and they were listed right there when i signed up....

fair or not fair - its still fun and as a matter of fact- isnt the limited second move supposed to eliminate the P1 advantage anyway? (i shudder as i think about the barrage of posts about to follow that statement) lol

Brf: Life ain't perfect. I wouldn't bother trying to individually challenge all your opponents with opposite positions. There's no way everybody will do that, and trying to add all the results back in to the tournament would be a major headache anyway.

So we have one unique tournament with a little element of chance in it. It's different, at least. If we can get past the fact that it's not totally fair, it could still be fun.

Brf: why didn't you put the tournament with 2 games per match with only 1 match , each person would have played 2 games, 1 as P1 and 1 as P2?

I was hoping to just recreate a second tournament with reversed order but this is what Fencer sent me:

"I am afraid it would not be possible because player start positions are determined by their BKR at the moment of the tournament start, and it seems that they are not the same as they were when the first tournament was started. It would require to set too many database tables manually and if I make a mistake, the whole tournament would be damaged.

However, if you want to make the second tournament with 2 games between each 2 players, the start order does not matter too much because everyone would play both colors with everyone else."

OK since it's apparent this is one sided I'm going to manually challenge all my opponents to a single game of the opposing color with the same time restrictions in the tourney. its a pain in the ass I know, but I would strongly encourage the rest of you to do the same if you would and we'll just do a manual tally of the final scores at the end to determine the overall winner.

Sorry again for the screwup guys. -Brf

Snut: I concur. I wasn't overly thrilled how the system decided to do this either. Currently I'm talking to Fencer about what the options are and how to get this set up right next time. I suppose another option for just all the players in this tournament for right now would be a King of the Hill Round 2 where we did this all over again but with the reciprocal of our current colors. that way at least through the play of both tournaments we could get a set in. I might have to get fencer's help though to rig the player starting positions though. If you all are interested that'd be cool, we'd just play this tournament out in two parts. -Brf

Don't know how happy I am about some of the people I have to play where I am Player 2....But if that's how it has to be then so be it...I guess.

This is a stupid way for a tourney to run, Brf....I know it's not your fault, but it sucks none the less.....

Brf: You can't set up a tournament where each match consists of two (or any even number of) games because that allows for the possibility of ties. That's how management has it set up. Unfortunately for Pente, that means it's really hard (impossible?) to set up a tournament that's fair.

Oh, and you've got nine games as P1 and nine as P2. ;-)
