Thank you Kevin! That was so generous of you! I am so excited!! Since the other two have shared their wonderful entries I will do the same.

Why I deserve a membership.......

1) I LOVE this site and love playing games here.

2) I am a stay-at-home mom/foster mom and playing here keeps my sanity.

3) Finally, and most importantly, having a membership would mean I would have more games and more chances of beating my brother (Big Bad Wolf).

Thanks for offering this membership to those of us who couldn't possibly win one!!

browsing to the zillion messages on the discussion board, i found yours. What drew my attention? Let me explain why the words "...why you deserve a membership" popped out in this this overkill in messages

-why: interesting ... its this kind of questions that haunted human kind for ages. I decided to read on
-you: who? me? Uh-ow, it is getting personal. now i certainly want to read on
-deserve: lazy as i am, i dont like the change in tone in this question. Dilemma: should i read on, or shouldn't I? I decided to give it a gow
-a: not much information here. Again faced with the dilemma: should I, or shouldn't I? The choise is harder this time, given the low gain I had making it the previous time. Going to make a cup of coffee to think things over...
ready, and I have decided: i'll read on.
-membership: huh? excuse me? on this cool site? What a twist. this made the question very interesting... hard to find an answer though... maybe i could try to prove to be worthy by trying to win the tournament?

Any means of getting real even.

The first double entrance is already discovered. Herculesbeast and Savage are the same and even play eachother to get one on the first place of a ranking list. He admitted it to me when I asked him about it. I am not entering this tournament, it takes to long to play a tourney with more then 100 players

I appreciate your clarifying those points, and there is no doubt that the Rook membership is the best overall value. I was considering Knight only to limit myself; that is, 50 games is a reasonable cap, and if I went much over that then other personal endeavors would suffer.

But, I really just wanted to make sure I could enter a tournament (provided enough game slots) of a particular type, assuming of course I was not already in one of that type. Your posts cleared that up.

1. June 2003, 12:18:58
harley
Also, Pioneer, it does state that it is when the tournament finishes, rather than when the individual finishes his/her part of the tournament.

But as a knight, you could still not join every game type of tournament, because you would still have limited game slots! If you are considering membership I would highly recommend rook, you would be able to join unlimited tournaments and have unlimited games... and you would also be able to create your own tournament, and fellowship. The benefits are far greater for a rook.

I will soon be starting a tablut tournament for pawns with a 6 months rook membership as a prize. I will allow plenty of time to sign up as I know some pawns will have to wait for tournaments to finish. You could enter that! As far as I know there are no tablut masters among the pawns (and only a handful among rooks! lol) so everyone stands a good chance of winning.

1. June 2003, 08:51:25
Kevin
As a pawn you can join ONE tournament of any game at a time. When your section in that tournament finishes, you can join another.

As a rook, you have unlimited tournament entry.

As a knight, you would be allowed to join one tournament of each game type. That includes Halma 8x8 and Halma 10x10 as different games, so you could join about 45 tournaments at a time if you wanted to (i'm not sure exactly how many games there are now).

Subject: A question of privileges
Not sure if this is the correct forum instead of the tournament board, but...

If I get a Knight membership, how many different tournaments can be entered? The site literature says one of each kind of game, but I am wondering what exactly constitutes a "kind of game". For instance, if in a Halma8 tournament, could I also get into one for Halma10?

These would seem to be different games, although when I finished my first tournament as a Pawn I was fooled into thinking I could join another tournament, but to my dismay I discovered that I had to wait for the other players' games to finish!?

I have no objection to the site's policies, but I think they could be more explicit.

Subject: Buckwheat
WOW. I know I can be a bit of a negative NElly sometimes, but It loosk like we have found someone with a worse attitude that I have. At least I make some effort to be constructive and make suggestions.

Initially, I thought Buckwheat was using his complaints as a reason to decline invites, because he likes his 2500 rating and knows he won't keep it if he accepts invites. That still may be the case, but now it seems more likely that he just finds anything to complain about and can't see a good thing if there is the smallest drawback to it.

Buckwheat-- Running a site costs money. SOme of us have decided to contribute to the cause, while others have decided to complain. Maybe you are saying "Hey, it is not my job to subsidize a site, they are a business and they have to give me something before I pay up."

To this I have two responses.

1) In the real world, one has to PAY before receiving any service most or all of the time, and

2) although gaming sites are a buit different in that the gaming site must provide something to the customer BEFORE the customer will pay, I would argue that Brain King has provided plenty so far.

Actually if I win the $250, I'll put some back into the site (that is run a few "free membership" tournaments) :-)

Just to make sure that everybody understand, as Kevin pointed out, the $250 award is not sponzored by BrainKing.com, it will be paid by Ed Trice himself. So it could go "back to the site" only if I win the tournament ;-)

Subject: Re:
Buckwheat, I have no idea, nor do I care what your W/L record is. You make a good point that the $250 should go back into the site, but you also mention that it's not a huge amount of money (to some people, or, say, compared to buying a new server). Besides, the chess tournament is just a fun thing to do, so why criticize it?

Too bad you have trouble accessing the site sometimes. Why not try a little constructive action, like sending money (of which you obviously have a great abundance).

I know I didnt agree with Dmitri as to how many unpaid members are crying cheapskates, and thats irrevelent now, but the point he made is true concerning some and buckwheat is a prime example.

29. May 2003, 11:48:34

Buckwheat, one final time. The problem is being addressed and will be sorted soon. Posting numerous messages complaining will not get it fixed any faster and will only slow Fencer down because he has to read your posts before he starts work. If you really must gripe take it to the general chat board where we can tell you in detail why you shouldn't complain so much.
This board is for posts about BrainKing, "structure, features and future", not multiple posts about a bug we already know about.

I may have temporarily lost the ability to delete but I still have a 'ban' button in working order. Please dont make me use it. Sensible questions about this will be answered, complaints with attitude wont be. Thank you.

Subject: buckwheat...
As you may have read other places, try running your own site. When you encounter a problem, wave your magic wand and *poof* the problem is fixed! If you get good at waving that wand, you might get a lot of problems fixed!

In case you didn't get the hint, it's really not that easy to just magically fix every problem. Especially since, as noted on Brainking.info, this connectivity problem is not the fault of Fencer nor Liquid. It is their service provider. So it certainly won't help to harp them about it when it isn't even in their control.

Secondly, posting your message with the same complaints numerous times is not going to help your cause. If people saw it the first time and nothing happened, why would something happen this time? Are your posts about "Boo hoo, the site is slow and doesn't let me in. Boo hoo" going to help the site run better?

In addition, I notice the picture of a pawn beside your name. This would imply that you are a non-paying member. Considering you are not satisfied with the site's performance (Just a guess - you certainly didn't make that obvious!), that is a good enough reason so please don't bring it up. However, being a non-paying member, you again are not helping the cause of the connectivity and speed problems. The more paying members, the faster and better hardware the site can get.

Finally, if you would notice, the site is not sponsoring the tournament. The tournament is held by GothicChessPro (Ed Trice) and such is covering the prizes. This money is not coming from the site, so please don't complain about it.

Thank you for listening, and happy gaming.

Kevin

I agree with WOLF. This site runs just fine at least 95% of the time. I dont play chess but the tournament prize of 250 bucks is a lot of money for a new game site. Heck it is a lot cash for any game site. Where else can you play a tournament for some cash and prizes with no entry fee. Something like that could get the word out and encourage more people to the site and get more memberships. Afterall you have to have enough empty slots to get into the tournament.

Question for Fencer: Do you try to keep track of people who make multiply accounts and try to cheat?

I mean for the most part, it probable isn't a big deal - but with a $250 Gothic Chess tournament, I would guess there would be at least a couple of people who try to make 2-3-more? accounts to give them more of a chance to win.

Anyway, I was just wondering if you were watching for this or not - I don't know of anyone off hand, but I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't at least a couple of people who will try this.....
