Emne: help plaese anyone ??
Some months ago, I inadvertently downloaded a file sp.exe onto my work pc.. it doesn't seem to affect a great deal apart from lots of words appear as links that shouldn't be, that take me to ntsearch engine.. and some sites that I should be able to see, I can't atall.
Well, I can't delete this file .. access denied, source may be in use.. and we've tried uninstalling and reinstalling explorer with no success.
Has anybody else seen this before and have any ideas how to deal with it please ?

<You may have to do it from DOS, which in the newer M$CRap products is a lot harder than it used to be, which is why I still have 95OSR2 and will have until debian gets installed. ;>

LOL.. I know what DOS is :-D now I've just got to go talk to our sytems admin man before he goes down the pub at lunchtime ! It's his last day today, so his last chance to fix it :)
I'll let you know.. thankyou :))

Try starting in DOS and remove the file manually, I did a quick look and it seems to be a Trojan File (most likely from Germany cos they have most reported hits) but as yet no removal instructions.

I have a link to a program that may be able to detect and remove it, if you want send me a PM and I will give you the link Niki :)

Thanks everyone.. he seems to have fixed it !!
We'll see how it goes, I may still be asking for that link Aragon, but at the moment it all looks good :))
I've lived with it since January, and it took him 2 minutes to sort out.. LOL.. I told him he wouldn't be able to go to the pub until he'd done it.. that worked ;-D
Thanks again for the help and suggestions :0)

Spyware and such

Even though you got rid of that one file, I would take a look at this program: Spybot - Search & Destroy

It is updated often (And you can download the updates strait from the program) - But I use this program often to to searches on my PC.

Not only does it find spyware, and "highjacking" programs - it also searches for "bad" cookies, or cookies from sites which may use that information for "bad" things. It will also clean and remove files. So it is a good thing to download and use every once and awhile. (Only down side is it is not the most user friendly program, but it should not be too hard.)

thanks BBW.. though this being my work pc, I shouldn't really be downloading stuff atall.. and our firewalls etc really ought to be keeping any nastiness out :)

Emne: Survey Monkey
Just took a survey for a group which used Survey Monkey - which I found to be pretty cool, which I might use some day - but I figured I would post about the place also.

The "Basic Subscription" to hold surveys are free - 10 questions, and 100 responses per survey. Very profesional looking, and no ads either.

Anyway, not sure if this would interest anyone, but I figured I would share it.

Emne: PC problems - Help much appreciated!
Since 2 weeks i encounter pc problems.. get unwanted pop ups - even after downloading McAfee Virusscan and security 8.0 on my pc and yet it doesn't work well!! :o(

Today I again got warnings on this screen from BK, that my pc has dangerous spyware etc & I have no idea where that comes from... looks like from BK, because not a new browser pops up, but right on the screen here... if i click on Back i get back on the previous screen..

Anyone knows whats going on or what i should do? I should better re-install Windows 98, right? But if someone here has the time, please advise me or write a path for me what to do first, second, third.. I really need help!!

Could it be that by playing these games the memory gets full?

Thanks so much in advance..

On-Line scan of PC for spyware

I have to used the above, and I'm not sure if it "fixes" any problems - but it does scan and lets you know of spyware.

this is the pop-up add filter I use...you have to pay for it, but it is just great and stops all popups...

add killer
here is a review on the product...
This has to be about the best pop-up killer we've used and is not only capable of handling every pop-up we could find, but it also doesn't get in your way and can be configured to allow pop-ups on specific sites. It also keeps a log of all the sites it has suppressed pop-ups from, which makes for interesting reading if you are so inclined. We really like this tool and at $25 it seems reasonably priced. It gets 10 gearteeth out of 10!
- Mark Gibbs, Network World Magazine (May 13, 2002)

I will also say this....i have just looked at the "LOG-FILE" it keeps RADIANT and the very worst offender is BIG-CAFE....

does anyone here use a wireless router in their home?
i have cable, but 4 teenagers, each have their own computer, but we are using a wired router for 4 connections.
when going to wireless, besides the wireless router, what do the desktops and laptops require to receive the wireless connection? will they each need a card inserted?

TIA

Emne: Re: Wireless
I use one in my home. Each computer will need a Wireless network card. Most new laptops have these built in. Also, beware...You must have win98se or better to use a wireless card.

Don't several pda's use bluetooth technology for their wireless stuff? I've also heard that some auto manufacturers are using bluetooth for some of their sensors.

Would it be possible to add router # 2. Then we could have 3 computers and 1 router from router # 1 and 4 computers from router # 2.

you want to run 7 computors ?
how many ports have you on your router .

I have 4..so if i have another router gives me 8, but i need one for the second router.
Nope...not 7 computers "only" 5...Antje has many kids :)

one router will do the trick , you need a hub to split your ports you can buy these very cheaply now , not sure if you can put two routers together in the method you describe .

(from a website)
The Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 8-Port Switch is the perfect solution for connecting up to 253 of your PCs to a high-speed Broadband Internet connection or to a Fast Ethernet or Ethernet backbone. Configurable as a DHCP server or client for your network, the EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 8-Port Switch acts as the only externally recognized Internet gateway on your local area network (LAN). The EtherFast Cable/DSL Router can be configured via SNMP to filter internal users' access to the Internet and serve as an Internet firewall against unwanted outside intruders. Use to connect 8 PC's directly, can be branched with hubs.

Harley: One could edit the registry, but that's not something that should be done by the casual user. TweakUI might help, but I don't know if it comes in a flavour compatible with your friends computer, since you didn't mention the OS. Outhouse is a PITA to make behave, especially when you have the audacity to not use Bill Gate's favourite.

I don't know what he uses! I didn't think to ask, I'll find out, and look up the Tweak too! Thanks :oD

Emne: Guestbook
I have been trying to work out how to create a guestbook on the web space provided by my isp. I have a website already created but I cant seem to work out how to get my text box stuff to get posted to a nother viewable page (hence posting a message to a guestbook) I can however set the page up with input feilds , email address , name etc and add a reset and submit button, I just cannot get the submission to work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

the easiest way to do it is to go to somewhere like bravenet and copy paste the code onto you web page....you can set it up to suit your self of course with your own backgrounds etc etc.

go see mine...it is one of the freebies :)

Emne: STOP OUTLOOK STARTING
9 times out of 10 if Outlook starts the moment the PC is turned on then its because its in the start-up folder (not registry)

Check by going:

[Start] [Programs] [Startup]

If outlook is in there then simply delete it (this WILL NOT delete outlook, so dont worry about deleting from this folder)

Then restart and Outlook will not start.

Alternatively by holding down shift when starting windows you will prevent ANY startup programms running.

Although NTH is similar to web tv.. it is not as good as webtv..
NTH does not have the capabilities of webTv..

When i used to have NTL as my internet , i couldn't play some of the games..

So i don't know if anything can be done really..
