Subjekt: Re: Someone explain this one...
pentejr: Your opponent probably had more completed games than you. Until you accumulate a certain number of completed games, your ratings adjustment after each game is modified (increased) by a factor that declines as you gain experience. Since you have completed only 42 games of hypergammon, your ratings adjustment is greater than it would be if you had already achieved the level of experience at which the extra factor ceases to apply. Your opponent was probably closer to that level than you, and therefore had a smaller adjustment.

Subjekt: Re: Someone explain this one...
alanback: I figured it was something like that. But this is the key to the ratings inflation you find in the more frequently-played games on this site, is it not?

Subjekt: Re: Someone explain this one...
pentejr: I don't think so. It is rather considered smart than new people have a higher coefficient than people who have played a lot of games, and it could even compensate an inflation caused by people entering the rating list with a too high score. When there really is inflation it is likely to be caused by a too generous policy regarding first ratings, when the new overrated players inflate the rating pool.

Subjekt: Re: Someone explain this one...
nabla: I would expect the average ratings displayed on the boards to rise steadily, because a larger proportion of successful players than unsuccessful ones tend to stay active.

Subjekt: Re: Someone explain this one...
alanback: True, that is also a possible factor.

Subjekt: Re: Someone explain this one...
alanback: That would explain why the active ratings tend to slowly rise, but I believe (but cannot prove) that the average rating rises slowly over time.

Well, i ran out of time on about 6 games in the last 2 days despite playing moves constantly.
Watch out for the new time controls, they can be extremely difficult to keep up with when the added value each move is less than the time it takes to get some sleep. I'll resign all my current games with such controls.

Subjekt: Re:
grenv: but it does give some of us the added option of finally playing fast games and not having to wait sometimes months to make a single move. Just a matter of being careful. I always make sure my opponent knows when they are playing a very very fast game with me

SafariGal: It was a tournament, and really with adding only 3 hours, once you run out of time it's impossible to keep up unless you don't sleep. Whoever goes to sleep first loses.

grenv: but if you add 3 hours then as long as you make 8 moves in a day you are fine and should always run at a buffer of at least 24 hours. You should be playing once every 15 minutes all day every day !!!

This person plays every 15 minutes. You should play like this. (refer to bug link)

grenv: Sometimes I have signed up for one day/move games, and have played my moves in the morning then when I leave for the day the game/tournament started, and by the time I come back to the site the next morning,, I have timed out, without ever knowing that the game had even started yet! That is very frustrating for someone who plays fast and is here everyday!

At this moment in time (approx. 0100 GMT on May 31), each player in the backgammon rankings from #2 to #5 has more experience than all the players above him/her combined.

Subjekt: How strong?
Hi everybody!

My guess is there is an answer ofr this somewhere, but I can't find it... How strong is the BG-community here compared to other sites? Compared to live? Since I only played it on the net, I have no idea. In eg chess, it's easy to compare the rating of a few known players net & live rating and get an idea of the level of play and how strong the site is. Are there anything like that in BG as well?!

Thanks in advance!

Subjekt: Re: How strong?
Pason69: it is far weaker here than some sites such as http://www.dailygammon.com. at DG they talk A LOT about tactics and really analyse a lot of games as the site is totally dedicated to backgammon.. Brainking is more of a chat site and if you are after serious backgammon, this is not a good place. The boards here have basically no analytical information whatsoever

Subjekt: Re: How strong?
Pason69: You´ll find more familiary games to play here (which does not mean you´ll find weak players), since it´s difficult as a rook to choose your opponents upon their rating if you play a lot of tournaments like you and most do. Allmost 1000 players is not a enourmous community, so you´ll find less top-players. But compaired to life you´ll find more players at your level on net and here also. It´s difficult to compare the sites, the rating system are different. If you surch to play against experienced players probably FIBS is a good adress.
I like the Galore sites for further questions about the game, it would not make sence to reinvent the wheel on every backgammon-site :)

Pason69: i play both on here as well as on dailygammon as well .. the players there often annihilate me :)

the good thing of this site though is that there are a lot of different games to play .. this is an allround game site while other sites concentrate on mainly 1 game type

How often are the ratings posted? I just noticed I won 2 hyper games and nothing changed. Then I lost a game still nothing. It has been a few hours now .. I don't know much about the ratings..Just thought it unusual. Thanks

Pbarb2: I just looked at your "Last 10 completed games" list, and I don't see any hyper games since the 12th. Are you sure they weren't part of multi-game matches???? BKR isn't affected until the end of the match. Look at the PM's you received at the end of the games.

Subjekt: illegal move?
I don't think I should have been allowed to move 6-4 4-off in this game since I could have moved 6-1 3-1 and used all seven points on the dice. However, the system did let me swap the dice and do 6-4, 4-off. Is this an error?

Subjekt: Re: illegal move?
jryden: It is not an error. The rules say you have to use both dice, but there is no rule that says you need to move the maximum number of pips.
