I grew artichokes & the related, cardoon this year.I let some of the cardoon mature into globular heads similar to artichoke heads.
I had heard from an old italian cook that what we know as artichokes.actually were cardoon heads that were eaten in ancient times.anyway,we ate some cardoon heads...they are great,i'm still alive.just incase anyone has wondered if they are edible.

题目: Cranberry Raisin Tart
I like to buy extra cranberries while they are available and keep them in the freezer.

Makes one 10-11 inch tart or 8 tartlets 4 1/2 inch diameter.
You need unbaked pastry for a 2 crust 10-11 inch pie.
3 cups fresh or frozen whole cranberries, picked over, rinced and patted dry with paper towels
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup walnuts chopped coarse
1 large orange: grated rind plus 1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 cup dark brown sugar packed
1 cup sugar (if you like a very sweet pie add an extra 1/2 cup sugar)
2 Tablespoons quick cooking tapioca
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

egg glaze: 1 egg beaten with 1 Tablespoon water

Prepare your pastry and use half of it to line a pan or tartlet shells.
In a bowl combine and stir together cranberries, raisins, walnuts, orange rind and juice, sugar, tapioca and spices
Brush the egg glaze over the bottom of the pastry
Fill with the fruit mixture and spread flat
Place on your top crust, crimp edges, brush top with egg glaze, sprinkle lightly with sugar and cut slits or holes to allow steam to escape
Place in a preheated 425 fahrenheit oven bake 15 minutes reduce heat to 350 bake an additional 30-35 minutes or untill crust is golden brown

I've just been at this restaraunt where they had scorpion on the menu. We ordered a couple and a few minutes later the waitress turned up with two scorpions standing side by side on a leaf, complete with claws, heads and stings. A cullinary lightyear from fish and chips.

YULE RUM CAKE

1 or 2 quarts rum baking powder
1c. butter 1tsp. soda
1tsp. sugar lemon juice
2 large eggs brown sugar
1c. dried fruit nuts

Before you start, sample the rum to check for quality. Good, isn't it? Now go
ahead.

Select a large mixing bowl, measuring cup, etc.

Check the rum again. It must be just right.

To be sure rum is of the highest quality, pour one level cup of rum into a
glass and drink it as fast as you can. Repeat.

With an electric mixer, beat 1 cup butter in a large fluffy bowl.

Add 1 seaspoon of thugar and beat again.

Meanwhile, make sure that the rum is of the finest quality--
try another cup. Open second quart, if necessary.

Add 2 arge leggs,
2 cups fried druit and beat till high.

If druit gets stuck in beaters, just pry it loose with a drewscriver.

Sample the rum again, checking for tonscisticity.

Next sift 3 cups of pepper or salt (it really doesn't matter which).

Sample the rum again.
Sift 1/2 pint lemon juice.

Fold in chopped butter and strained nuts.

Add one babblespoon of brown thugar, or whatever color you can find. Wix mell.

Grease oven and turn cake pan to 350 gredees.

Now pour whole mess into the coven and ake.

Check the rum again, and bo to bed.

Squash Braid Bread

1 package (1/4 oz) active dry yeast
2 tablespoons warm water (110* to 115*)
1 cup mashed cooked butternut squash
1/3 cup warm milk (110* to 115*)
1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 egg
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

GLAZE:
1 egg, beaten
1 tablespoon water

In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in water. In a mixing bowl, combine squash, milk, butter, egg, brown sugar and salt; mix well. Add yeast mixture and 1-1/2 cups flour; mix well. Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Punch dough down. Divide into thirds; roll each third into an 18 in. rope. Place on a greased baking sheet. Braid ropes together; pinch ends. Cover and let rise until nearly doubled, about 30 mins. Combine glaze ingredients; brush over braid. Bake at 350* for 20-25 min or until golden brown. Remove from pan and cool on a wire rack. Yield: 1 loaf.

If it was just a printed recipe book, folded A4 pages maybe stapled in the middle, it would only cost for ink. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, the kids school does recipe books, about 4 or 5 A4 sheets, folded, and charge £1 each to raise money for the school.
We could also do joke books taken from the joke board.
