Brf: I don't think there's a fair way to have a finals in Pente here on BrainKing. That's nothing against you, it's the way Fencer has programmed this site.

I love the Fischer clock, but I think allowing more extra time per move is the way to go (see my earlier post).

zoeyk: Yeah I get not being one with the Fischer clock. I'm not a large fan myself but in this instance it worked like it was supposed to and I was able to get a quick tournament started and completed before March 17.

I think it is useful for some tournaments but it is inconvenient when you have something unforeseen happen and need automatic vacation to cover your ass.

Thad: I'm not sure why it chose not to default to another round to try and settle it. though with the parameters set to 3 wins match for a final round with 2 players. That'd make things tough, I'd prefer a final round of 4 or 5 at least.

Add to that the fact any final round is on a Fischers timer so then dein and spavacz are tied to their computer on these games for quite some time with no vacation allowed. I thought someone would win the whole thing this time myself and was hoping for a fast tourney with no next round.

it'd be nice to have a checkbox on tournament setup for "force tiebreaker" or something though.

Good job, Dein, Spavacz. I'll have fencer split the prize between you.

Zoey, had you tied them and we had a 3 way tie in one section, I believe it would've went to a round 4. but with only two players left the tourney called it finished.

I'm glad those Fischer times were able to get this completed before March 17 too! that was close :) see you all in St Pats!

For future tournaments, I would recommend a longer bonus time. I usually set the bonus for 1 day & 4 hours. That way, if you move on Monday at lunchtime, for example, you know that, even if your opponent moves almost immediately, you've still got until the same time the next day to make your next move. I'm having some time issues with the current settings.

zoeyk: Well I mentioned it in the tournament description Here

but essentially I chose to use a Fischers clock to speed the tourmament up so as to end by the St Pats tourney.

The Fischers clock has 3 settings
Initial time on the timer to start with...here 5 days, Bonus time awarded (if any) for moves made....here I chose 8 hours...so for example 3 moves would net you 1 more day on your "clock". The Final setting is total bankable time (a stretch goal for sure) but I set a 10 day max time allowed (move bonuses would not be awarded for over 10 days left on your timer).

Remember also that the time you have listed is all the time you have to play the entire game, with the addition of 8 hour per move bonuses of course.

the format you usually see in the tourney looks like this: (Time control (?): Time: 5 days, Bonus: 8 hours, Limit: 10 days, no days off)

or in other areas the shorter version 5/8.0/10
[ time given @ start / move bonus / Max Time allowed ]

sorry if you thought vacation was an option here...the whole point was a fast turn-based to end all rounds by March 17th....which I think is doable and with the move bonus you could've stored up quite a few days past the initial 5 days to get you out of a tough spot later. That was my theory anyway.

Well it looks like Round 2 is imminent, so congrats to all of you that made it and for doing it in what looks to be record time. Since we ended up getting more people than I thought and there are 6 sections that is going to make things interesting since I have 5 players per section set up.

I'm pretty sure you all won't be playing together in Round 2, likely it'll be something like two '3 player' sections or somesuch. with the winner(s) of round 2 advancing to round 3. if I do this again at some point down the road I could set it up as 6 players per section? but then there would be 42 players or something no doubt :D what does everyone else think? leave it as 5? increase to 6?
